Chapter 416
Daddy, Mommy had been in Prison
Robert had been planning on moving his mother to the house at the side today.
But it hadnât begun yet, and because heâd seen Harvey yesterday, he decided to take the letter to his mother.
Just as he was getting ready to go into the reading room with the letter, the butler had come over and told him that his mother was now sober.
So it was just the time for Robert to come in front of Maisieâs room with the letter his father had for her.
âIf youâve decided to be with that Lane woman, what are you still coming to see me for? After all, in your eyes, Iâm not even a match for a hair on Georgia Laneâs head, so why bother with a lame, elderly woman like me? Let me die on my own!â
Maisieâs voice was full of resentment and pain, and Robert didnât expect his mother to forgive him on the spot. If saying those things could allow her to take her temper out a little, that was good enough.
He took out the letter and walked in front of his mother.
âYesterday, when I went to M Garden for a meal, I met the boss of the place, Harvey Moore. Mom, I donât know if youâre aware of the relationship between Harvey and my father. He told me that Dad left us two letters, one for me, and one for you. Iâd wanted to read the one Dad had left for me first, but the butler says youâre awake now, and I think you might want to see this.â
With that, Robert passed the opened envelope to his mother.
Maisie, whoâd been simmering with a wrathful grudge to begin with, froze to the spot from the news.
Aidan had actually left her a letter. This man didnât ask after her for over a dozen years, didnât lavish a single care on his son and daughter, and didnât even know his daughter was dead.
She hadnât been willing to tell Aidan, either, just to see if this man would have asked after the two of them every year.
But several years after their daughter died, Aidan didnât even come back.
At that moment, Maisie understood it all. The moment Aidan decided to leave the Simpson family, heâd abandoned them for good, so he wouldnât be keeping up with information at all.
That man wouldnât even have known their daughter was gone.
Her hatred burned deeper year after year, and just thinking of Aidan, the man sheâd loved and hated throughout her life, Maisieâs heart bloated with bitterness.
So back then, when sheâd been in danger and saw the bomb before her, all she wanted was to take revenge on this man, have him torn to shreds, dead before her.
As if it would relieve the bitterness and agony â but knowing that Aidan was dead in every rare moment Maisie was sober this year, it didnât make her that happy.
She would rather have stayed deranged. And with his sonâs incident, Maisie didnât have a care in the world, and she thought she might as well have just lived out the rest of her life as a madwoman.
Sheâd thought that Aidan hadnât had the slightest bit of pity or respect for her.
So, she hadnât expected that a year after the manâs death, sheâd receive a letter heâd penned for her.
Maisieâs hand trembled as she took the letter, her eyes reddening right away.
âYour father... still remembered to leave something for me. I thought that he felt like he didnât need to tell us if he lived or died anymore. Iâve been married to him for ten years, and he left for a new love just like that. Itâs possible he never loved me, and I was only someone who was arranged to marry him. I thought Iâd always only been a tool in his eyes. But he still remembers that I exist.â
Maisieâs mood affected Robert, and he felt a twinge of sorrow.
He recognized the sadness, fury, and pain in his motherâs tone.
His father had really gone too far with her. Just one letter could make her this happy.
âGo. I want to read this letter alone.â
Maisie spoke to Robert.
She didnât have the energy to care about Georgia and Robert, and didnât want to care about how she was going to interact with her son in the future.
She just wanted to see what the contents of Aidanâs letter to her were.
âIâll be waiting for you outside, Mom. If anything comes up, remember to let me in.â
Robert said that, then left the room and closed the door.
He took a few steps out and saw Georgia headed this way, seemingly looking for him.
Robert walked over on his own and spoke to her.
âI didnât go to the reading room. The butler said my mother was awake, so I went to see her. Then I gave her the letter Mr. Moore kept. She wants to be alone right now and see what the final letter my father left were says.â
Georgia nodded, then raised a dubious question.
âThen you havenât read your own letter yet, right?â
Robert nodded.
âNot yet. I suddenly canât muster the nerve to read it in the moment. Iâm worried my mother might get another breakdown, so I wanted to wait outside for her situation. Donât bother with me. I have to wait outside the door in case my mother wants me in. Maybe sheâll want to chat later.â
Hearing Robert say that, Georgia responded.
âI just got a phone call from Astonâs mother, who counts as my aunt. She told me that sheâs here in D City with Astonâs father, and wants to meet me near the hospital. I might have to go out now, so I came over to tell you about it.â
âWhy do Astonâs parents want to meet you?â
Robert asked suspiciously.
âFor Aston? But youâre only cousins. Last time we went over, we tried to persuade him, but just a couple sentences later he lost his temper. Are they hoping you can say anything more to their son? We havenât gone to visit for the past few days; do you know what situation heâs in right now?â
Georgia shook her head.
âI donât know what condition heâs in for the moment, but looks like he should still be in the hospital. Otherwise, Astonâs parents wouldnât have arranged the meeting to be around the hospital. I donât think they mean any harm. Iâll go see them and see what they want me for.â
Robert wasnât going to keep her from the door, of course, but he still cautioned her.
âYou canât see whatâs in a personâs heart. You havenât been in contact with them, after all. What if theyâve been kidnapped and are being threatened to get you outside? Bring your bodyguards; donât go alone.â
Georgia couldnât help but smile.

I wonât leave alone, and Iâll definitely bring bodyguards with me. Annie and Wesley are taking a nap. Remember to watch the kids. Iâll be back as soon as I can.â
With that, Georgia said goodbye to Robert, then got out, into a car, and headed to the meeting place sheâd agreed on with Astonâs parents.
She was used to taking bodyguards with her whenever she went out now.
The habit had come about because the last two times sheâd been attacked, itâd been because there werenât enough people around her protecting her, which allowed Robert to be threatened, and injured when he was saving her.
Those two lessons had left a marked impression on Georgia, so she wasnât going to go out alone out of obstinacy.
Meanwhile, Robert waited outside his motherâs room.
In the room itself, Maisie trembled, fell silent for a while, and finally unfurled the letter.
Seeing the first line on the letter, her tears fell and moistened the paper.
