Chapter 2-The Stepping In

Sydney Carrington's POV

"Oh god. I can't believe this is happening." I breathed out excitedly as I sat beside Will in his car. Others from our pack who were going to participate in the Season were travelling together with us as well.

The rest of the pack remained back home along with our alpha and once we were back, there would be a huge celebration for the newly mated wolves.

Will took my hand and grinned at me, "Neither can I." He murmured and I smiled up at him. We continued driving and soon entered a town where we would be having a pitstop.

We had took a flight from home and have been driving for a day and a half, having breaks here and there in between and we were stopping in this town for the night and for food.

Will stopped the car and the rest stopped as well. I got out of the car and stretched before glancing around the town. Looking around, I could see that several other wolves from other packs were here.

I breathed in the fresh air eagerly, and sighed wistfully as I thought back to the moment Sarah and I shared along with Sean. I knew that Sean was acting all tough so he wouldn't show that he would miss me but I knew my brother well.

And even though we had our arguments and fights, I loved him especially when I had to be the buffer between him and Sarah when they would get into a huge quarrel as she had limited patience while I had more.

Sarah had grown very emotional and had teared up making me tear up as well, which was ridiculous because we were still going to be in the same pack and I could see her everyday if I wanted.

But I guessed that it was the finality of me moving on when the three of us had been through some tough times with the passing of our parents and whatnot. But it was alright, in a way, I was glad that I was moving on to the next chapter of my life.

And that new chapter? It was with Will. And I couldn't be happier about it. Will and I had met at a party when I was seventeen and he twenty-two. Honestly, at first glance, Will had not caught my attention. He seemed like a player with his blue eyes and blonde hair and I didn't want anything to do with those.

But apparently, one of his friends had approached me with a cheeky grin on his face and told me that Will was interested in me. I had stared at him coolly and Will had approached us agitatedly and uncomfortably.

That caught my interest because what player would have his friends introduce him to a girl like that? And from then on, the rest was history when Will had asked me out repeatedly and I gave in.

I turned to look at Will who was giving the pack instructions and stuff and a smile crossed my lips. Will was an incredible beta and I was extremely proud of him. "Syd? You okay? Do you want anything to eat?"

"Yeah, I'm a little hungry." I smiled at Will who grinned at me and held my hand, "Oh, well, would you mind waiting? One of the pack members has a little problem."

I could feel my smile slightly fading before pushing it back, "Oh its fine. Really. I can wait."

"Oh good. Give me a minute. Or if you want, you can go get your dinner first and I'll catch up with you." Will beamed at me and I smiled half-heartedly at him, "Of course. I'll see what I can get."

Will nodded at me before going to the pack member in question and left. I sighed and dropped the fake smile on my face. Will was an amazing beta but sometimes I felt that he loved his job more than me. But it just showed how committed he was to his work and I guessed that I had to accept that about him.

I sighed and walked around the street on my own. This town was small and was populated by humans. There were werewolves around and most of them were in groups and pairs. My heart sank a little at the sight of the several werewolf couples walking around and most probably participating in the werewolf season.

I shut my eyes and enjoyed the cool breeze blowing through my hair. At times I didn't know if I was making the right choice of being with Will. I know he loved me but he didn't make my heart race like how the heroes did to the heroines in my romance novels.

But I knew I loved him. I didn't have a doubt about it. But I longed for the fiery passionate relationships that the characters in my books had, not the safe one I had with Will. Perhaps the spoken passionate relationships in stories were fake and not real considering that they were books of fiction.

I snorted to myself and shook my head, Will made me happy and he cared for me, that was enough for me. I smiled and brushed my doubts aside. I loved Will, that was the end of it. I just had to look forward to the next part of my life with Will.

I entered a diner and ordered a meal for myself and texted Will where I was and waited for him. The sun set quickly and this resulted in the town being bathed in darkness saved for a few streetlights here and there. I sighed defeatedly before leaving the diner because Will didn't show up.

I glanced at my watch and the ringtone on my phone alerted me that Will had replied and was making his way to me. I sat down at the benches outside the diner and waited for Will and watched the last remaining citizens on the street. It was a quiet town after all, especially when it was in the middle of nowhere in the woods.

Crying and shouting suddenly sounded and I looked around for the source. Standing up, I craned my head and saw a man and woman holding a child while another man was beating him up.

"Hey! What are you doing?!" I called out and ran towards them. I was a werewolf and I had extra strength because of that. The man who was throwing punches stood up and turned to face me with a sneer on his face, "Turn away wolf. This doesn't concern you."

I glanced at the woman and child who were crying and sobbing in fear and I felt for them. They didn't deserve to see their husband and father respectively being beaten up. Unfortunately the man in front of me was definitely a werewolf as well and I didn't think I could fight him easily as he was taller and bigger sizes than me.

However, I definitely wasn't going to let this go. What this man doing wasn't right and I knew better than to walk away. "You're hurting him in front of his family! Don't you have a heart?" I demanded and glanced down at the woman who was cradling her son in her arms and trying to reach for her husband at the same time.

The man scoffed and stalked towards me and I held my ground, I had nothing to be afraid of. "Who the hell do you think you are girly? And maybe you should pick your fights carefully before interfering." He sneered.

I shot him a look of disgust, "I don't give a damn. I'm someone who is standing up for what is right. And all I see in you is a pathetic weak man who likes to bully others to make himself feel better."

The man growled, clearly not happy with my response and I could see him shaking. That meant that he was about to shift.

"Oh you really shouldn't have said that." He growled angrily and he looked as if he wanted to strangle me when a stone cold voice spoke out.

"Kyle."

At this I turned to see a tall muscular man step out of the woods and into the shadows. Since it was dark, I couldn't see him clearly or in fact at all and the man-Kyle protested angrily, "Cousin-"

"Kyle, enough." He spoke out again and this silenced him.

I glanced at the family on the ground and they seemed even more terrified than ever. And it seemed that this newcomer was the boss of whatever is going on.

"Leave." That one word from the man in front of me caused the family to scramble to their feet and disappear. Oh god, what have I gotten myself into?

"You're in charge aren't you?" I demanded and the man didn't say anything.

"How could you? Who gave you the right to treat people like that? And especially in front of his family? Do you have no heart?" I asked incredulously and Kyle stepped menacingly in front of me.

"Look here queen barbie, he's an alpha, show some respect!" He sneered and towered over me immensely.

I looked at the man in the shadows and I glanced at him with contempt, "If that's the case, I'm glad I'm not in your pack." I shot a condescending glance towards Kyle and the alpha before turning to leave.

Once I was back at the benches, I exhaled heavily. I couldn't believe I had done that. To an alpha no less. If I had done that to my pack's alpha, it would have seemed like a challenge and I would most probably be killed.

But I had no regrets, helping that family was the right thing to do. I turned around and peered into the direction of the forest where the confrontation was held but saw that the two men were gone.

"Hey there you are! Ready to go?" I almost jumped from Will's voice and I looked up to see him smiling at me. I nodded and shrugged, "Yeah. Sure." I stood up and Will wrapped his arm around me and kissed my head, "Thanks for being so patient Syd. I'll make it up to you."

Having his arms around me and with that small gesture of affection just cleared away all of my doubts about us. "Yeah. It's fine. I love you Will and I understand, its your duty."

Will sighed relief and he stopped us in the middle of the walkway, not that was anyone to block considering that it was quite late by now. "I love you Syd." He pressed his lips against mine before pulling away. I smiled up at him and he intertwined our hands and we walked off to the inn that we staying in.

What I missed the entire time was a pair of grey-ish silver eyes watching us.
