Chapter 27-The Escaped Prisoner

Sydney Carrington's POV

"Kyle Preston Alpha! He has escaped! Someone must have helped him out!"

Without a word, Brendon jumped to his feet before cornering the guard. "What the fuck do you mean he's out?" He snarls furiously and the words kept echoing on in my head that someone had let Kyle out.

My heart pounded and I glanced around the trees warily, fearing that Kyle was watching us this very moment. I took a deep breath before hastily making my way to Brendon who was interrogating the guard harshly.

"Brendon! Hey! Relax! Calm down!" I murmured soothingly into his ear and clutched onto his arms. He took a deep breath before letting go of the guard and shut his eyes.

Once he was calmer than he was before, Brendon turned his attention back to the guard and growled harshly. "How did he escape?" He gritted out and the guard answered.

"There weren't any signs of forced entry or anything like that. The door to his cell had been unlocked. Someone had let him out."

Those very words sent a chill throughout my body. That could only mean that there was a traitor in the pack. And I guessed Brendon realised that fact too as his eyes turned dark before he headed back to the car.

Exhaling deeply, I quickly gathered all of our stuff before rushing to him. This was bad news. If there really was a traitor in our pack, it would be almost impossible to seek him out.

Our pack lands were vast and members were numerous. It would take months of searching and questioning to even find out a thing regarding this whole issue. And by then, it may be too late. Whatever Kyle or his leader planned might have come to pass and we wouldn't have time to stop it.

Getting into the car, I sat down quietly before dumping the items in the back. Immediately, Brendon drove off, his posture was tense and rigid, his jaw was clenched and a harsh glare was on his face. Looking at him now, I can certainly say that his wolf was on edge as well. His eyes were a very dark shade of gray and he was gritting his teeth.

I myself was afraid, with Kyle out and about, safety for Brendon and I was once again an issue. But I had to be strong. Brendon needed me and I him. However, the thought of needing Brendon brought my thoughts back to what transpired earlier at the lake.

My cheeks warmed at that and I shut my eyes as I leaned my head against the headrest. The feel of his touch on me had sparked something in me. And it was bloody amazing! If it was just his touch that caused such a pleasurable reaction from me, I wondered briefly how it would feel if we did went through with the mating.

I wasn't a virgin to say the least. Will was my first and that was why knowing he had betrayed me had hurt so bad. I had given him everything but to receive nothing in return had almost shattered me.

Enough, I wasn't going to think about Will now. What was the point? He was in the past, I had my present and future to look forward to. And why the hell should I even bother thinking about him when someone who really did love me was just sitting beside me?

I opened my eyes and peered up at him. Earlier, his eyes were gleaming silver as he leaned on me. His lips had moved against mine so hungrily and my nerves had felt like they were on fire as his fingers-

"Sydney. I know what you're thinking. I can smell it."

My eyes snapped wide open and I glanced at him with my cheeks flushing furiously. Brendon's eyes were a lighter shade of gray now and a small smirk curved onto his face.

"What?" Brendon let out a low husky laugh that made my insides quiver before reaching out for my right hand and intertwined our fingers together. I looked down where our hands rested and my breath hitched.

"We'll have time for that later. After all, I'm not done with you yet." He spoke out huskily as his smouldering gaze burned into mine. Heat burned in me and I inhaled sharply from just that look.

In no time, Brendon pulled the car up in front of the pack house and leapt out. I followed him as we entered his office where Rhett and a few other men were discussing and looking at a map on the desk.

"Alpha, Luna!" The men greeted and bowed. Brendon ignored them but I gave them a nod and shy smile. "Who was on duty when he escaped?" Brendon demanded and I stood beside him and observed the men in front of us.

"I was. Alpha." A man stepped forward, his expression was of nervousness and I can understand why as Brendon narrowed his eyes at him. "Do you know what this could lead to?"

I exhaled at Brendon's words, my mind racing through all the possible scenarios that could happen if Kyle wasn't found and re-captured again. At the sound of my heavy sigh, Brendon turned to me and it was as if he just realised that I was in the room with him.

"Sydney, would you mind leaving us?"

I eyed him a little suspiciously before complying. "Alright." With that, I turned around and exited the room to see Owen and Sam-my two guards following behind me.

"Luna." They both greeted and I gave them a small smile. "I hope that both of you are not in trouble for everything that is happening so far."

Owen shook his head while Sam replied. "It is fine. It is our job to protect you and we are honoured that you have given us a second chance."

I raised an eyebrow and nodded. "Right." With that, I made my way back home. Entering the front door, I stopped to see Sean and Sarah waiting for me as they yelled at the television that was showing some form of action movie.

"What are you guys doing here? And how did you get in?" I questioned curiously and made my way towards them while my guards stood guard outside the living room.

"Well. We came to see you. You've been really busy recently and we missed you. After all, we have loads to catch up on." Sarah announced and growled in annoyance as Sean accidentally hit her in the face as he made some rude comment regarding the show.

I raised my eyebrows and eyed the bowl of popcorn in her hand. "Alright then. What have you guys been up to? Sean how's school?"

Sean shrugged before throwing a popcorn at the screen, "Oh's he an idiot look!" He shouted and groaned exasperatedly before slumping back into the sofa.

I rolled my eyes and turned to Sarah who shot a look of disgust at our younger sibling before turning her attention back to me. "We're great. How are you? How are you dealing with...everything? I mean the attacks and now, the prison break?"

I sighed and pushed a curl behind my ear. "I'm fine. I'm just afraid for everyone's safety now. Okay, enough about this. How are you and Rhett?"

At this, Sarah rolled her eyes and scoffed. "I knew you were going to ask this." I gave her a pointed glare and Sarah sighed before starting. "We're good. He can be such a dork but he's a great guy."

A smile graced my face as I watched Sarah talking about Rhett and I tucked my legs underneath me on the sofa. Leaving me seated cross-legged. "So do you think he's the one?"

Sarah barked out a laugh before shrugging. "I don't know, I think it's too soon to say but he thinks we're good. He even brought up the subject of going to the season with me next year."

I raised my eyebrows. Who knew Rhett was the one chasing for commitment under all his playboy-ness? "Really?" I questioned disbelievingly and in awe.

Sarah nodded her, green eyes sparkling with amusement. "Really, I mean I got a shock when he brought it up, but I'm not saying I hate the idea."

A grin formed on my face and I teased. "Awww, Sarah is in love!" At my words, Sarah scowled at me but I could see a hint of a smile on her lips as she made a face. "Knock it off! I haven't said anything like that to Rhett and I don't want him hearing that."

I laughed and quietened down before glancing at Sean who had fallen asleep amidst the shouting and gunfire from the movie and was now snoring. "Holy crap, he's bloody loud!" Sarah groaned in annoyance as she shot a glare towards him.

A smile formed on my lips. It was when I spent time with my siblings did I realise how much I actually missed them.

Something tugged in my mind and I pursed my lips. Maybe now was the appropriate time to ask Sarah about our parent's mysterious past. Glancing at Sean to see that he was deep in sleep, I turned to her. "Sarah, uhm, do you recall anything about living here in the European pack when you were about nine?"

Upon hearing my question, Sarah frowned and shook her head slowly. "No. What are you talking about? We were born in the North American pack."

Seeing my silence, Sarah pressed. "Syd, what's going on? Why the weird question?"

I hesitated answering because what if my theory was wrong? But I decided for it anyway, "I just, I don't know. I suspect that our parents were from the European pack and that we moved over to the North American pack when I was four."

I looked up to see Sarah staring at me with a strange expression on her face before she frowned. "I-i don't know what to say. It's just that-when you brought this topic up, I remember these dreams I had. It was of us in an unfamiliar house and-I don't even know what I'm saying."

She groans and covers her head in her hands. "Sarah, I'm sorry for bringing this up. I-" I started but Sarah cut me off, "It's fine. But if what you're saying is true, then why can't I remember anything?"

I shook my head. "I don't know. That's why I asked you if you knew something. But it's fine. Whatever it is, it happened many years ago." I finished and Sarah remained silent.

A comfortable silence started and I guess both Sarah and I were deep in thought about what could have happened sixteen years ago.

It was about six hours since I had came home from the pack house and my guess was that Brendon was still at his meeting with Rhett and the other men. I yawned sleepily and sipped at my hot chocolate before continuing with my book .

The door opened and I looked up to see Brendon entering the house with a scowl etched onto his face. "Hey, is everything alright? Has he been found?" I questioned concerned and placed my mug and book on the table.

Brendon sighed heavily and stopped to stand in front at me. "It's fine and no. It's like he vanished off the face of the earth." I reached over and held onto his hand and squeezed it. "It's going to be fine." I soothed and Brendon pulled away from me.

"No! It's not!" He growled and slammed his hand on the table. I pursed my lips and looked up at him before I stood up and pulled him over to the sofa to sit. He sat down reluctantly and I sat beside him.

"What happened?"

Brendon narrowed his eyes at me, obviously not wanting to tell me anything but I shot him a glare. "Come on, I'm your equal aren't I?" I coaxed and he sighed and gave in.

"After you left, I gave out punishments to those on duty when he escaped." Brendon stopped and gave me an insolent look as if to dare me to say something. I shrug and frowned before pressing. "Continue."

He sighed, "After, some of the leaders brought up concerns about pack security and some were indirectly questioning my leadership. Of course, I dealt with those with the challenge of a fight. We sent out men to search for him but nothing. We got not one single fucking clue as to who helped him or where he is!" He roared angrily.

I wet my lower lip and looked up at him. He was tense and I could see that something was still bothering him. "Kingston, spit it out. I know something is bothering you."

Brendon narrows his eyes at me but I met his glare evenly, I wasn't one to be fazed by his infamous glare. Seeing that I wasn't going to budge, Brendon looked away and continued.

"I-I'm worried Sydney. I failed you. Again. My deranged cousin is out free and he could hurt you anytime because of me. What if I can't protect you or save you in time if anything happened?"

I pressed my lips in a thin line before reaching over for his hands and I interlaced them with mine. "Brendon, hey, look at me. We'll be fine. I mean, there is no way we can know what's going to happen but we'll be together. We can get through this together." I say softly and a rueful smile crossed his face.

"And, who said I need saving? Maybe it's you who needs it." I pointed out with a smirk on my face. Brendon rolled his eyes and I grinned at his face. "Look, we're going to get through this alright?" I stated before pulling Brendon into a hug.

In my arms, Brendon sighed before resting his chin on my shoulders and his arms wrapped around me tightly. "I love you Sydney. And you're right. Thank you for saving me." He mumbles in my ear before pulling away slightly.

I stare up at him stunned as he leaned in and pressed a loving gentle kiss on my forehead before standing up. "It's late. I'll get a shower and we can go to bed." He suggested and I nodded my head in response.

I watched him go up the stairs before a giddy smile crossed my face. Who indeed knew that Brendon Kingston could have such a way with words? I could feel a warm smile spread across my face as I stood up and finished my drink before heading to the kitchen to clean it.

Entering the kitchen, I looked out of the window and the sight of a figure in front of the window made me lose my breath. It was a figure that shouldn't even be present. I let out a little shriek before I could feel myself turning weak. As a result, I dropped the mug and it shattered into millions of pieces on the tiled floor.

"Mom?"

It was the figure of a woman. A woman who had died ten years ago.
