31: Transgressions
Predatory
SASHA POV
Well, fuck.
The moment our lips touch, Drakeâs body temperature spikes. All his hesitation and fear transforms to confidence and joy instantaneously. His arms wrap around my waist, and I have to admit, heâs one of the better kissers Iâve met in the field.
Thereâs no question what he thinks we are, what he thinks I am to himâand no question that Iâll have to break his heart.
Donât think about that now. He canât suspect that anythingâs amiss. The missionâs not over yet.
Nearby, a man clears his throat, startling Drake and I apart. None other than Anselm himself is lurking in the shadows under the overpass, flanked by two fae assistants. Has he been here the whole time? Doubtful. I would have smelled him, sensed him. The fae must have brought him here directly, through one of their tricks.
âWhat do we have here, Sukoshku?â Anselm demands in gruff Russian. Thank Bast he opted not to speak English. Maybe I can play this off to Drake that heâs one of Taliaâs mafia buddies and then salvage the mission. If it can be salvaged at this point.
âThatâs the guy I was telling you about!â Drake whispers. âDo you know him or something?â I smile tightly and gesture for him to step back. I wish I had a way to send him somewhere else.
âJust doing my job, Commander,â I answer, also in Russian and unnaturally calm. Drakeâs eyes dart between us wildly. I doubt this is how he wanted this evening to go, given what weâve learned tonight. âYou authorized use of any means necessary, as I recall. With all due respect, what brings you into the field? I have the situation under control.â
âI thought Iâd look into this case myself, while you were occupied in Montana.â
âAnd? Have you found anything we missed, Commander?â
âNo. But that doesnât mean thereâs nothing to find. Or that theyâre innocent. Clearly youâve gotten to know at least this one. Why havenât you executed them yet?â
âInsufficient evidence, Commander. Nothing new came up through our surveillance while we were away.â
âNikki, what the fuck is going on?!â Drake whispers. I wish there was a way for me to tell him to bail without Anselm knowing. Heâs shifting from foot to foot, like heâs debating whether to get between me and Anselm or not. Donât do that. Itâs a horrible idea.
âRelax. Iâve got this,â I mutter in English without moving my lips.
Anselm chuckles menacingly. âHow adorable. He has no idea, does he?â I donât know why heâs doing this, but Iâm glad heâs choosing to keep using Russian.
âWhy would he? You yourself have said that Iâm the best of the best at what I do. Why would you take a risk like this and jeopardize my cover, Commander?â Behind my back, I press a button on the side of my fake fitness tracker, sending Rika and Zoe an emergency alert. I donât want to keep this up without them any longer than I have to.
âIt felt like something was off in your reports, like there was something you werenât telling me about this mission. And there was.â He gestures to Drake and me. âYouâve gone soft.â
âYou are mistaken.â
âThen execute him. Now.â
âWhat is he saying? Whatâs his problem?â Drake demands. I just shake my head at him. Please, if you value your life, get the fuck out of here.
âI do not perform executions without sufficient evidence that the law has been violated, Commander. Iâm afraid I must decline.â
âYou would refuse a direct order from your commanding officer?â
âI am sworn to make sure that justice is served, Commander, not to kill the innocent. Perhaps I am mistaken, but donât your oaths of office read the same way?â
âIt is for me to determine who is innocent and who is guilty, who lives and who dies.â
Am I ready? It doesnât matter. Heâs forcing my hand. Ready or not, this is it. âThen perhaps it is time someone new filled your position, since you are no longer committed to enforcing the law and serving justice.â
âWhat are you saying, Sukoshku?â Anselm growls. Heâs dangerous, but I donât think heâs seeing completely clearly in the moment. Drake is edging closer to me. I dart a warning glance sideways at him, but he still looks like he wants to intervene between Anselm and me, and now more than ever, that canât happen.
âI am challenging you to a duel to determine which of us is more fit to execute the duties of your office,â I declare, taking a step closer to Anselm. Drake freezes. That was probably a mistake for the mission. But not a mistake overall, if heâs truly innocent and I save him.
I wish I knew for sure. But Anselmâs ruined any chance of that.
âYouâre out of your mind,â Anselm scoffs.
âWhich form will you use, Commander? Or are you too much of a coward to accept my challenge?â
âThis is no place for a duel. Such a thing would be in violation of the law.â
âYour assistants can make us a portal to a more suitable location, can they not, Commander?â After all, thatâs how you got here.
âNot while heâs watching.â
âMight I ask why not, Commander? Itâs not like heâs human. But I can make him go away, if youâd like.â
âAnd let him continue to run afoul of the law?â
I grit my teeth and do my best to maintain my professional facade. I donât want him to have any idea what Iâm planning for him. âWe have no evidence that he is doing so, and my teammates are still in the area and still surveilling him and his friends, Commander. Assuming you are correct and he is deserving of death, they can certainly bring it to him.â
Anselm huffs irritably. âI suppose. Itâs not like this will take long, anyway. You have five minutes toâ¦handle your business and meet me back here.â
âYou are most gracious, Commander.â I turn on my heel and start back up the bike path, grabbing Drakeâs wrist as I go.
âNikki, what the fuckââ
âStay in front of me. I donât trust him,â I hiss, using English again.
âI had no idea you were so fluent in Russianââ
âI told you Iâm from Russia originally. And weâve only known each other a week. Thereâs a lot we donât know about each other.â
âWho is that big dude and what the hell does he want?â
âMy family tried to set me up with him and he thinks Iâm âthe oneâ or something. Heâs not pleased to have found me with someone else.â
âWhat?! Butââ
âHe shows up like this, to try to get me to give him a chance, every so often. Itâs not a huge deal. I can get rid of him if youâre not there, but I donât know how long itâll take. Iâm sorry I didnât mention him before, but I thought heâd finally given up. It seems I was wrong. Russian men can be very persistent.â
âHeâs old enough to be your dad, though!â
âAs far as my family is concerned, money talks louder than sense.â This is the worst alibi Iâve ever come up with on the fly and I hate to speak ill of the dead like this, especially when itâs straight bullshit, but I donât have time to come up with anything better.
âNikkiââ
âI know we have a lot to discuss and that this is all very messy, and I wish I could magically fix it right now, but the best I can do is go back down there and make that beefy Russian problem go away. And if you come with me, I donât think I can save you. Stay here. Iâve sent Effie and Angel an SOS. They should be here any second now. They might be able to tell you more.â
I try to leave, but his hand catches my wrist.
âWait. Please. This doesnât make any sense. And when weâ¦. Did you feelâ¦.â A strangled noise of frustration escapes his throat.
âI know. This wasnât how I wanted tonight to go, either. But Iâll come back.â I hope. âIf I donât deal with this now, itâs only going to get worse. And trust me when I say you donât want to fight him.â
âHow are you going to get rid of him? If I canât fight him, thereâs no way you canââ
âNot all problems need to be solved with violence.â But this one will be. âIâll be back.â I kiss him quickly on the lips, hoping it will leave him stunned long enough that I can actually get away. I donât want to give Anselm any extra time to plan his strategy, and I donât want him coming after me.
âYou want me to justâ¦wait here for you?â he asks as I pull away.
âProbably better if you go home. But itâs up to you. Just donât follow me. Iâll text you as soon as this is over. But I have to go. Now.â I start walking away before he can detain me again.
âBe safe,â he calls after me. I wave in acknowledgement, but my insides are shaking. Iâm going to do this. Iâm finally going to do this. I donât know if Iâm ready or not, but Iâve been plotting this revenge in every idle second and every dream and nightmare for more than a decade.
Youâre the best youâve ever been, I tell myself. And itâs true. If Iâve ever had the skills and fire to take Anselm down, this is the moment.
âMiss Sukoshku?â one of the fae addresses me from the shadows as I approach the overpass again.
âMy business is complete. Is the Commander ready?â I reply, stone cold, betraying nothing.
âCome with me. Iâve been instructed to escort you to the dueling grounds.â
I take the hand offered to me, and then the world gives way to a swirl of light and energy. I hate fae portals. But Iâd endure worse for this chance.
Iâll do whatever it takes to make Anselm pay for his transgressions in blood.
