Chapter 199
The Girlboss Begs for Remarriage
Frank rolled his eyes at Vicky. âWhat on earth do you keep in your brain?â
âYou.â Vicky smiled.
Frank was left speechless.
They arrived at the small diner that Winterâs adoptive mother owned, and a sweet young girl greeted them as soon as they entered.
âPlease sit anywhere you like,â she said.
Frank studied the girl and saw some resemblance between her and his mentor.
Vicky cleared her throat just then, bringing him to his senses.
They found a quiet corner, and Frank flipped through the menu before saying, âBring us some of your specialities.â
âAlright. Please wait a moment,â Winter said, picking up the menus before hurrying off to the kitchen.
Frank looked aroundâthough it was a modest diner, there were many customers.
It was most definitely lively during rush hour.
âWhat do you think, Mr. Lawrence? She fits your description the most,â Yara said.
Frank nodded. âProbably. She resembles my mentor.â
âWhat are you going to do?â Vicky asked. âTell her who you are? Give her money?â
Frank thought about it. âIâm not planning anything until I see how her current life is. If sheâs selfâ
sufficient, I wonât imposeâ¦â
Turning to Vicky just then, he asked, âIt wonât be an issue for you to arrange a job for her when she graduates, right?â
âNo problem since youâve asked.â Vicky shrugged, a lot less wary toward Winter than Helen. Frank turned to Yara just then and said earnestly, âThank you, Ms. Quill.â
âThatâs not necessary. Just holding up my end of our deal,â Yara replied.
Frank nodded. âLetâs eat for now.â
Soon, a man in a suit hurried into the diner, quickly changing clothes before heading to the kitchen to help.
He appeared to be Winterâs adopted brother, Fred.
âThatâs one dutiful sonâhelping out as soon as he returns from work,â Vicky pointed out. Frank was further relieved as well, since Winterâs life appeared to be good.
Bang!
Suddenly, the front door of the diner was kicked wide open as a tattooed bald man strode inside, followed by two young goons.
âBusiness booming today, Madam Zims!â the bald man bellowed.
A woman who had been working at the kitchen all this while hurried out to himâshe was Carol Zims, Winterâs adopted mother.
âOh, I didnât know you were coming, Mr. Compton!â she exclaimed, hurrying to the counter to grab a stack of cash and quietly stuffing it into the bald manâs hands.
Through it all, Winter and Fred were standing tamely in a corner, while Jackie Compton promptly counted the cashâ¦
âJust one thousand?!â he growled. âAre you trying to mess with us?!â
Carol was left bewildered. âWâWasnât it always a thousand?â
âThatâs before.â Jackie snorted. âBusiness is booming, isnât it? Youâll have to pay moreâtwo grand starting this month!â
âBâBut I donât earn that much, Mr. Compton,â Carol replied. âAside from rent and utility bills, thereâs also Winterâs tuition fees⦠We really canât spare more!â
âDonât give me that!â Jackie bellowed before wheeling on Winter. âStudying when youâre penniless?
Just come work for me!â
He seized Winter by the chin, chuckling. âHehehe⦠Who knows, youâd make bank if with me.â
