Chapter 91 - Vol. 4: Mason To Haru - 91
Haru's Love (A Stepbrothers BL Harem)
Mason
Mason wasnât in the mood to linger much longer. The moment Professor Wang ended the class, he packed up and headed out of the lecture theatre. He was just exiting the building when a female voice called out to him, âMason!â
It was Elizabeth, and behind her were Lucas and Carter, Masonâs close friends. Mason waited as they caught up to him, and the moment they did, Lucas flung his arm around Masonâs shoulders and asked, âYou like literally ran out of the lecture theatre. Whatâs the hurry?â
âI have a few things to do,â Mason said evasively. Mainly, going home and getting his assignments done by Thursday night. He and the other brothers were leaving for St. Joseph Island on Friday morning, and he wasnât about to leave any schoolwork undone while going off on a little vacation. Grades were important to him, especially when heâd be getting recommendations for job hunting after graduating, which would be that year. He wanted a great company where he could gain as much experience as possible where business finance was concerned before moving to Japan to work for Uncle Jin.
âWe were wondering about lunch,â Carter said. âBut since youâre busy.â
Elizabeth linked her arms with Masonâs and said, a cheeky smile on her lips, âI bet whatever it is can wait, right?â
Mason said bluntly, âNo, it canât.â
Elizabethâs bright smile disappeared immediately. âOh, I see.â She proceeded to look disappointed as Mason pulled his arm away from hers.
Carter said, âThereâs always another time.â
Lucas nodded. âAlthough I have my car here, so if itâs home youâre going, I can drop you off on the way.â
Mason thought about this for a second and then said, âIâll take the train. Thanks for the offer.â He was about to head off when a familiar loud voice came their way.
âBro!â
It was Isaac, and Mason groaned inwardly. He had the gut feeling Isaac was going to say something to the group Mason didnât like.
âIsaac,â Carter said. âFinished classes for the day?â
The boy nodded. âYep. You guys off to lunch or something?â
Elizabeth said, âUnfortunately, no. Mason said he has things to do.â
Isaac turned to Mason and asked, âThings? What things?â He looked perplexed for a moment and then widened his eyes. âOh, you mean finding a place to stay over at St. Joseph Island?â
Mason wanted to curse loudly and box Isaacâs ear. He managed to keep his cool, however, and said, âSo you going home with me or not?â
Isaac nodded. âYep.â
Elizabeth asked, âYou guys are going to St. Joseph Island?â
Turning to Elizabeth, Isaac gave her a wide grin and nodded. âYep. Itâs gonna be fun. Four days during Easter break.â
Lucas said, âYou didnât tell us, Mason.â
Carter nodded. âThatâs the first Iâve heard of it.â
Isaac said, âWell, of course, since we only decided on it last night. And itâs Masonâs job to find a cool place for us to stay âcause I mean like eight people staying in a hotel for four days is way too expensive.â
âEight people?â Lucas asked. âWhoâs going?â
Mason said, before Isaac could reveal any more unnecessary information, âWe should get moving.â
âHuh? Yeah,â the boy said.
Elizabeth wasnât about to let the discussion end that easily and said, âIt would be nice if we could join you guys. Iâm not going home to my family this Easter since theyâll be out of the country to visit a relative in Canada.â
âYeah,â Carter said. âIâve always wanted to visit St. Joseph Island. I heard the cherry blossoms there are beautiful in spring.â
Before Mason could end the conversation and leave, Isaac said, âThen why donât you all come along? Itâll be fun.â His eyes were bright when he burst out, âYep, Iâm going to invite my friends as well.â
âThen weâre coming along,â Carter said. âItâs been ages since we went on a vacation together, Mason. When was the last time?â He proceeded to look thoughtful. âOh, thatâs right, first year of high school.â
Was it just him, Mason thought, or did Carter word it in such a way that made him feel a little bit guilty. But of course, his friend was right. It had been ages since they all had gone on any vacation together.
âAnyways,â Carter said, âletâs get some lunch.â
Lucas suggested, âWe can get takeout and have it at Masonâs place.â He turned to Elizabeth. âYouâve never been there, right?â
She shook her head. âI was busy that night of the housewarming party.â
The word lunch got Isaac excited and he asked, âWhat should we have?â
An hour later, they were home, and Carter, Lucas, and Elizabeth entered the apartment behind Mason and Isaac. The group went into the living area, and the moment they did, Aki came running over and started barking aggressively. The little pup specifically targeted his threat at Elizabeth who said, âOh my, what a cute puppy.â
Mason came down to his knees and stroked the dogâs head as he said, âWhatâs the matter? Why are you barking like that?â
As he put the bags of Chinese takeout on the countertop, Isaac said, âYeah, Aki has never been like that before. Itâs like heâs angry or something. Weird.â
Elizabeth said, âMaybe heâs not good with strangers?â
Mason nodded. âMaybe.â Though he doubted it. Aki had always been curious with strangers and would greet them excitedly. He was also very chummy with Sean, Haruâs new friend. Not to mention Sakura, Akira, and the Princeton brothers. Besides, the pup had already met Carter and Lucas and had thoroughly sniffed out both menâs smell, so the only new stranger was Elizabeth. Did that meant the pup didnât like Elizabeth?
âAnyways, letâs eat,â Isaac said. âIâm starving.â
The group settled down to lunch, spreading out the fare across the dining table. While they ate, Aki trotted over and nudged at Masonâs leg for the manâs attention. Mason chuckled and said, âYou want to join us, too, eh?â He picked the pup up and laid Aki on his lap.
Elizabeth, who was sitting next to Mason, reached her hand out and was about to pet Aki when the pup growled aggressively at her.
âThis little guy doesnât like me, does he?â she said.
âGive him time,â Mason said. âAki is actually a very friendly puppy.â
Isaac chuckled and said, âMaybe he just doesnât like you personally, Elizabeth. Maybe he knows youâre working on stealing Mason away, eh?â He winked.
Mason gave Isaac a death ray glare. âShut it, Isaac.â
Carter said, âSpeaking of Aki, I noticed he really loves Haru, doesnât he? The last time we were here, he never strayed far from Haru.â
Lucas nodded. âI noticed that, too.â
Isaac said, âThatâs because theyâre soulmates.â
Mason narrowed his eyes at his brother. âWhat are you going on about?â
Isaac said, âThat day we went shopping for a puppy, Aki just straight up went over to Haru, and the two fell in love at first sight. If you donât call that soulmates between a master and his pet, then I donât know what is.â
Elizabeth chuckled. âI donât think there is such a thing, Isaac. Yes, I believe there is oneâs soulmate when it comes to a romantic relationship, but with a pet?â
Isaac asked, âAh, how about one with two soulmates in a romantic relationship? Does that work?â
Elizabeth frowned. âWhat do you mean? Iâve ever only heard of one soulmate. Whoâd have more than one?â
Isaac shrugged. âMaybe the Shrine Maiden is different?â He eyed Mason. âRight, bro?â
Mason wasnât going to answer that and said, âIâm going to get my laptop and start searching for a place on St. Joseph Island.â He got up, and after putting Aki down on the floor, left the room and headed up the stairs.
Aki trotted over to Isaac and begged to be placed on the boyâs lap. Isaac gladly obliged and then continued eating.
Elizabeth asked, âWhatâs a Shrine Maiden?â
Isaac raised his gaze from his plate of sweet and sour pork and fried rice and said, âItâs the Onos legend. The Shrine Maiden gene runs in the Onos bloodline.â
Carter said, âYeah, I heard you guys talking about that on the night of the housewarming party. What is it really about?â
Lucas nodded. âIâm damn curious.â
Isaac was only too glad to enlighten the eager listeners about his stepbrothersâ unique bloodline.
âSee, the Onos has this Shrine Maiden legend in that she has these guardians to protect her and stuff and they bring the family wealth and prosperity. And it is said she is the most beautiful being in all of Japanâno, the world. Her beauty is so divine that men fall at her feet, begging for her love. Every generation, one of the Onos children will inherit the Shrine Maiden gene and she will bring the family wealth and prosperity.â
Carter burst out laughing. âThatâs a load of bull.â
Isaac frowned. âThatâs mean, Carter. And the legend is real, or at least I think so. I mean why else would our Haru look so damn beautiful and both men and women fall at his feet.â
Lucas raised a brow. âAre you saying Haru inherited this so-called Shrine Maiden gene?â
Carter shrugged his shoulders. âWell, I donât deny that Haru is...beautiful but...â
âAha!â Isaac pointed a finger at Carter. âSo you admit Haru is beautiful. I swear if you think dirty thoughts about my little bro, I will personally make Mason disown you as a friend.â
Carter chuckled. âYeah, right. Like Iâm going to do anything like that. Iâll get beaten up by not only Aiden, Noah, and Reo, but Mason would definitely kill me. We all know how much Mason loves Haru.â He glanced over at the door to ensure Mason hadnât return. âHeâs a brocon through and through.â
Isaac was surprised Carter used the word brocon, which was a shortened version of brother complex, a popular Japanese adjective used to indicate a character loving his or her brother too much that it became questionable.
The boy nodded, a smug look on his face. âItâs good you know the situation and your place. Well done. And since you all know Mason loves Haru, as his friends, you better be supportive of them.â
Elizabeth, who was sitting there eating and listening quietly, asked, âAs a brother? Mason loves Haru as a brother, right?â
Isaac said, âOf course we all love him as a brother, but for Aiden, Noah, and Mason, itâs more than that.â
Lucas chuckled. âMaybe Haru is the Shrine Maiden. Heâs hoarding all the hot men.â
This comment did not make Elizabeth happy, and she frowned darkly just as Mason returned with his laptop in his hands.
âI called to tell Aiden about you guys coming along. He said itâs fine as long as you guys get your own accommodations.â
Carter said, âThatâs no problem. Weâll just get a room next to the one you book or something.â
Lucas nodded in agreement.
Mason took his seat again and then proceeded with surfing the internet, searching for accommodations on St. Joseph Island. Lucas pulled his chair closer and helped look through the listings.
Isaac said, âWhy donât we give Haru a call? Heâs already on St. Joseph Island so maybe he can ask the locals if thereâs a nice and cheap option?â
Mason glanced at Isaac and nodded. âGood idea.â
âRight, Iâm on it,â Isaac said and lifting Aki from his lap and popping the pup on Carterâs, he rushed over to his bag sitting on the sofa in search of his cell phone. A moment later, he selected Haruâs name on the contact list and rang the brother. It wasnât long before it was picked up and Haruâs voice came through, âIsaac?â
Isaac pushed on the loudspeaker so everyone could hear what they were talking about and then said, âHey, so just wondering how youâre getting on and stuff. Iâm worried about you, you know, with Noah whisking you off to an island and confessing to you and everything. How romantic, right?â He laughed.
âItâs not romantic, idiot,â Haru replied. âNoah is a demon. And weâve only just talked this morning, so I know youâre not worried about me. You want something, donât you? I can smell it from here.â
Isaac grinned. âOh, Haru, my little bro, you know me so well. And yeah, Noah is a demon, isnât he?â Loud noises echoed in the background, and he asked, âYou at a café or something?â
âNo, Iâm at Sakuraâs house.â
Isaac flicked his gaze to Mason who in return raised his brows.
âSakura is there?â
âYeah, apparently, the Princetons are here on the island. They come every spring.â
Suddenly, a deep voice said, âHaru, your food is getting cold.â
âIs that you, Tristan?â Isaac asked.
âYep, itâs me,â Tristan said from the other side of the line. âHeard youâre coming to St. Joseph Island. You guys got a place to stay yet?â
Isaac eyes brightened up. âNope. Part of the reason why Iâm calling.â
âThen I think Iâll be able to help,â Tristan said, chuckling.
âReally?â
âNo,â Haru said firmly. âIâm sure thereâs plenty of accommodations on St. Joseph Island. Itâs a little tourist island, after all.â
âBut I bet you wonât be able to find one thatâs free,â Tristan said teasingly.
All eyes turned to Isaac the moment they heard the word free, including Masonâs.
âSpeak!â Isaac said excitedly. âIâm all ears.â
âNothing comes for free, Isaac,â Haru said. âAnd I better go... Hey, give me back my phone.â
Tristanâs voice came through loud and clear as the man said, âHaru is right. Thereâs no such thing as a free lunch.â
Isaacâs shoulders slumped immediately. âGreat. You just got my hopes up, Tristan.â
The man chuckled. âSo, you want a nice cottage with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a cozy open-plan living room with a nice kitchen and a beautiful garden, free for four days? No worries, all you have to do is model for Sakura.â
Isaac widened his eyes in excitement again. âReally? Thatâs all I have to do? Model for Sakura? Like for her painting and stuff, right?â
âYep,â Tristan said. âI love my sister and Iâd do anything to make her happy, and she really wants you and Haru to model for her painting.â
From the background, Sakura said, âYet, that cottage youâre offering doesnât belong to you.â
âWho it belongs to is of no importance,â Tristan said. âSo, what do you say, Isaac?â
Isaac chuckled and said, âDeal. Send over the details of the cottage, Tristan.â
In the background, Haru said, âI didnât agree to being Sakuraâs model yet.â
Tristan said, âNo worries, Isaac agreed for you so the deal is done. Whoâs in charge of accommodations? And how many people are coming?â
Isaac said, âMason, but you can send the info to me as well. As for the number of people...â He tilted his head to one side and did a count on his fingers. âFourteen.â
âFourteen?â Tristan shouted. âThere are only five bedrooms.â
âNo worries,â Isaac said. âWeâll fit in that cottage. Weâll arrange ourselves somehow.â
âWell, whatever works,â Tristan said. âRight, my job is done.â
A moment later, Haruâs voice came through. âYouâd do anything for free accommodations, wouldnât you?â
Isaac chuckled. âHey, itâs only modeling for Sakura. You just have to stand there while she paints, right?â He laughed. âAnyways, see you on Friday.â
âYeah, okay,â Haru said. âBye now.â
âYep, have a nice lunch with Sakura and the Princeton brothers.â
He ended the call and Mason said, âI donât have to search for accommodations. Good.â
âYep,â Isaac said, reclaiming his seat. Turning to Carter, he chuckled as he did a thumbs-up. âSee? The Shrine Maiden power. Haru brings prosperity to his family. Free accommodations.â
Carter rolled his eyes while Lucas chuckled.
Elizabeth asked, âThe Princetons. You mean the Princetons, right? As in the uber-wealthy family owning all those hotels and resorts?â
Mason chuckled. âYeah, that one.â
Lucas said, âThey were here at the housewarming party, too.â
Elizabeth looked stunned. âBut how?â
Again, Isaac did a thumbs-up. âThe Shrine Maiden power. Haru found Toby, a cute West Highland White Terrier dog injured on the street and took him to a vet and then returned him home to his owner, who is Sakura. And you guessed it, Sakura is Sebastian and Darcy Princetonâs girlfriend. So Haru brought the Princetons over for the housewarming party.â
Mason said, âI think you changed the story a little there, Isaac. Aiden invited them.â
âStill the same. If Haru didnât save Toby and met Sakura and the Princeton brothers, then Aiden wouldnât also have met them when he went to pick up Haru. Then he wouldnât have had the chance to invite them over cause theyâre like a big deal, and a connection to an uber-wealthy family is freakinâ everything.â He pumped his fists. âMy bros are awesome!â He chuckled, a big smile on his lips. âAnd now we have free accommodations.â He looked around, first at Carter, followed by Lucas, and then Elizabeth.. âYou all should be thankful, and itâs because of Haru.â
