That Ring: Chapter 16
That Ring: A Second Chance Sports Romance (That Boy® Book 5)
âMom, Dad, Iâd like you to meet Jennifer Edwards,â I say to my parents, who have just arrived.
They often come over to stay with the kids when I go out of town for games. We had a nanny when Lori lived here, but after she left, I decided to let her go, too.
âItâs so nice to meet you,â my mother coos.
Of course, Iâve coached her on what to say, what not to say, and how I donât want her fangirling.
My dad, on the other hand, canât hide his excitement. He kisses both of Jenniferâs cheeks, something Iâve never in my life seen him do in greeting, and puts on the Diamond charm, clearly trying to impress her.
âWeâve seen all your movies,â he says to her.
âDid you like them?â Jennifer asks in reply.
âYes, we did, of course,â my mother butts in. âBut weâre not here to talk about that. We want to know what your intentions are regarding our son.â
âMom!â I blurt out.
âIâm just teasing,â Mom says to Jennifer, rolling her eyes toward me. âHeâs been a little nervous about us meeting and gave me a big list of things Iâm not allowed to say. I had to say it just to get a rise out of him.â
âWeâll get along just fine,â Jennifer says with a grin.
âGrandma! Grandpa!â the kids yell, rushing down the stairs and handing out hugs.
âDamon, why donât you carry their bags up to their room?â
âNonsense,â my father says, flexing his forearm. âI know Iâm getting old, butââ
Jennifer grabs my dadâs bicep and gives it a little squeeze. âImpressive. I bet you could give your son a run for his money.â
âDonât I know it!â Dad laughs.
I take a deep breath.
âYour father and I are going to unpack and freshen up,â Mom says to me, âand then weâll be back down to entertain Jennifer and the kids with embarrassing stories of your youth.â She gives me a hug. âI know you have to get going. Play hard. Stay healthy.â
âThanks, Mom.â
âWeâll go help them,â Devaney says. âAnd they need to meet their new granddog!â
Once they are all upstairs, I lead Jennifer into my bedroom and kiss her.
And kiss her.
I canât kiss her enough, and for the first time in my life, Iâm not looking forward to leaving to go to a game.
âI should probably get going,â I tell her.
âYou look super sexy in a suit,â she says, pulling on my tie and making me want to rip off my clothes and have my way with her before I leave.
But I canât.
I probably have time for one more kiss though.
âIâm going to miss you,â she says when her lips leave mine.
âIâm going to miss you, too. Are you sure you donât want to come to the game with me?â
âIâm sure. I want some more time alone with you before the world knows about us. And we need to figure some things out, like you said. And Jadyn says you have to get through Wednesday. Once you and Lori agree to the settlement document in court, thereâs no changing anything. Jadynâs afraid us being together willââ
âI know.â I give her another kiss. It seriously has to be the last one. I hand her a couple of notes. âWill you give these to the kids tomorrow morning? I usually give them to my mom, but you distract me.â
âDamn right I do,â she teases, kissing me again.
âI donât want to stop kissing you, but I really have to get going.â
Jennifer plops down on my bed with a fake pout, looking sexy as hell.
âI want you in this exact spot when I get back.â
âThatâs a deal. Good luck, Danny.â
What she says makes me smile. I canât remember the last time Lori wished me luck.
âYou get going,â she says, getting up and smacking me on the butt. âIâll take care of the notes.â She sits down at my desk. âI think Iâll write them one, too.â
I kiss her one more time and then reluctantly grab my overnight bag. I already told the kids good-bye before my parents arrived. Iâm grabbing my car keys and wallet off the table in the foyer when the front door bursts open, and Lori waltzes in.
She looks at me and then around the house in horror. âDanny! What did you do to my house? Where is all my furniture?â
âWhat are you doing here?â I ask.
âI came over, so I could prep the house for the party tomorrow. You know the football playersâ wives all get together here if you are playing away on Thanksgiving Day. What did you do to my house?â she says again, walking past the entry, through the kitchen, and into the family room. âThis is hideous. Way too casual. Iâll just have to tell everyone that the good furniture is out for cleaning or something. Did you really change everything? No, wait. Let me guess, Jadyn designed it. Made it more casual for you?â
âShe designed it the way I asked her to. Iâve never been about show.â
âOh, Danny, you are show. Always have been,â she snarls.
âWhatever. You arenât having a party here.â
âGive me one good reason I shouldnât uphold our tradition.â
âWell, for one, you arenât a football playerâs wife anymore,â I try to say it calmly and not with the acid Iâm feeling.
âDanny,â she says, using her creepy, calm voice, âtechnically, we still married. We announced our divorce to the team yet, and , it needs to be business as usual.â
âIâll tell everyone tonight then. If you still want to be involved with the football wives, thatâs completely fine with me. But youâll have to hold the party at Richardâs house.â
âI would, but itâs not big enough.â
âThatâs your problem.â I shrug. âYouâre not having it here.â
âDanny, to be honest, Iâm doing it for our children. I donât want them to be upset. They love getting together with the other families. Itâs tradition.â
âDani! Damon!â I yell out. âDo you want to go to a party with all the other football families to watch the game tomorrow?â
âOh gosh, Dad! No!â Devaney yells from upstairs. âI have plans withââ Dani walks to the catwalk, sees her mother, and stops abruptly. âMom, um, I didnât know you were here.â
Lori scowls at her. Iâm praying that Jennifer doesnât come out to see what the ruckus is all about. âAnd what plans do you have?â
Dani doesnât say anything, but Damon does. âWeâre too old for that, Mom.â
âThatâs because your father is so old that heâs practically obsolete,â Lori sasses back as Angel comes flying down the stairs, yipping and jumping on Lori.
âThereâs a in my house? Get it off me, Danny! Itâs shedding all over my ivory slacks!â
I pick up Angel, cuddling her in my arms, not caring if I get a few hairs on my suit. âSo, the answer is no, Lori. No party. And you probably shouldnât just come into the house without knocking.â
âWho shouldnât come in without knocking?â Jennifer says, coming out of my bedroom. âAnd whatâs got Angel all upset?â
She stops dead in her tracks when she sees Lori standing there.
I donât want to piss Lori off. Not when weâre so close to a divorce. And Jennifer coming out of my bedroom while the kids are in the house doesnât look good.
âDanny,â Lori says, her eyes steeled with anger, âIâd like to speak to you in private,â
âI wish I could, Lori.â I glance at my watch. âNo time. Iâm on my way out the door.â
âAnd what about ?â she says, pointing at Jennifer. âYouâd better not be leaving my children with this .â
âMy parents are upstairs in the guest room.â
âAnd where is she staying?â
Jennifer saunters over to me, gives me a sweet kiss on the cheek, turns me toward the door, and pats me on the butt. âYouâd better get going, or youâll be late.â
âUh,â I say.
Sheâs right about being late, but I canât leave her alone with Lori. Itâs like cutting her artery and throwing her out to the sharks.
âIâll be fine,â she whispers.
âBye, Dad!â the kids yell.
âIâll call you tonight,â I tell Jennifer. I really donât have a choice at this point.
Thankfully, Lori follows me out to the car.
âOh, Danny, sheâs going to hurt your career. And I, for one, donât want to see that happen to you.â Sheâs such a liar. âBut, if you donât let me have the party, I might have to tell people a few things about our marriage that probably wouldnât be seen in a flattering light. And I canât cancel because Iâve already sent out the invitations. I already have the caterer booked.â
âTell people whatever you want about me. I donât care at this point, but there will be no party in my home.â
âYouâre going to regret this,â she warns.
Iâm so pissed that I canât even reply. The nerve of her. I get in the car, slam the door, and peel out of the driveway, actually squealing the tires.
At least sheâs out of the house.
As soon as Iâm out of her range of vision, I call Jennifer. âDonât let her back inside. Lock the doors.â
âWhat happened?â
âShe told me that if I didnât let her have her annual Thanksgiving Day party for the football wives, I was going to regret it.â
âWhat do you think she will do?â
âI wasnât actually planning to tell the team until it was official, but Iâve decided to do it today. Not make a big deal out of it. Let them know we split in May, signed our divorce agreement, and that it will be final in a few weeks. That, for the kids, we wanted it kept quiet.â
âI think thatâs good. Just the basics.â
âYes. Although Iâm dying to tell them about you. Itâs hard to keep the smile off my face when youâre around.â
âThatâs good because I plan on being around a whole lot, Danny Diamond.â
Later that night, after calling both my kids and my parents, I call Jennifer. âItâs almost lights out, but I wanted to talk to you before I went to sleep.â
âAsk me where I am,â she says.
âWhere are you?â
âIâm in your bed. And Iâm alone.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âThe kids and your parents asked me to spend the night. Your mother wants to teach me to make what she says is her famous French toast first thing in the morning. I think she sort of assumed I have been spending the night here anyway, but I let her know that I have been staying next door.
night.â
âAnd whoâs with you?â
âUm, well, itâs Angel. I know.
Sheâs not supposed to be on the bed, but sheâs tired. Your dad was having a ball playing with her, and sheâs bushed. Adorable and pathetic. Damon and Chase are still up, playing video games, so sheâs in here until heâs ready for bed.â She lowers her voice a notch. âI will admit though, I kind of like it here.â
âI canât wait until you spend every single night in my bed,â I tell her, meaning every word.
âI canât wait for that either. I might even be counting down. Did you know that there are only fourteen more days until your court date?â
âIâve been counting down the days, too. Does that mean once itâs official, youâll consider moving in?â
âLetâs just say after that, Iâm definitely open to discussing it. Play good for me tomorrow, and, Danny, Iâd love to see another one of your sweet signs on television.â
âI think I can do that.â
I hang up, feeling incredibly happy about our future together.
