Run➳Jacob Black [Book 1]
Kate rushed to first period Monday morning to find Rosalie already sitting in her usual seat. Over the past couple weeks the two girls had grown to have a mutual respect of one another. Neither would call the other their friend but they liked each other more than the usual abhorrence they had for many of their classmates.
Kate threw down her books next to the girl and immediately began talking.
"Rose what are we going to do?"
Rosalie looked sharply at her, "There's nothing we can do. Carlisle is letting Edward make his own decisions. Can't you control that sister of yours?"
Kate scoffed, "As if."
"Well, Edward is obsessed with her."
"How obsessed?" she looked at the blonde sharply.
Rosalie glowered, "Did you know he goes to your house every night to watch Bella sleep?"
"He does what?!" Kate yelled.
Many of the students including the teacher turned and looked sharply at her. She gave them a hurried sorry before turning back to Rosalie.
"He does what?" she asked more quietly.
Rosalie nodded, "It's sick, really."
"It's not your house he's breaking into," Kate muttered, "Well if its any consolation, which it isn't, Bella seems to be just as obsessed with him. He's all she talks about. It's a bit annoying actually."
"They're going to get us all killed if they're not careful."
"Agreed," Kate said opening up her books.
After school Kate bounced around the house waiting for her sister to arrive home. At every sound or disturbance she would glance at the door waiting for Bella to walk in.
It was just after six o'clock when Bella walked through the door.
"Where the hell have you been? I was worried he'd eaten you or something," Kate panicked.
Bella had this dazed and confused look on her face but she was otherwise unharmed. She didn't look at Kate but continued up to her room. Kate followed her sister giving her a lecture the whole way upstairs on how she should have called her.
"I love him," she muttered suddenly.
Kate stopped in her tracks, "What?"
Bella finally met her gaze, "I'm in love with a vampire."
"Bella, you don't know him. How can you be in love with him?"
"I am."
Kate just turned out of the room and went to her own room just to slam the door. She collapsed onto her bed and screamed into her pillow. She almost laughed at her own stupidity. In all honesty, she was not mad at her sister for being with a vampire. Hell, Kate was a siren that was friends with vampires and werewolves. But how Bella could already be in love with a boy she did not know. What actually bothered Kate was her lack of faith in Edward's control. She felt like any second the life could be drained out of her sister and that didn't make Kate happy.
The next morning at school Kate got a ride from Jessica seeing as how Edward was bright and early to pick up his new girlfriend. Once they reached the school parking lot, Kate practically jumped out of the car and made a beeline for the Cullens who all sat in Rosalie's red convertible waiting for Edward and Bella to arrive. None of the Cullens looked perturbed by her presence. Maybe it was the fact that they were all supernatural but Kate did not know.
"So did he pick her up," Emmett asked her when she leaned against the hood of the car.
"Yup," Kate said lowly.
Just then Edward's silver Volvo parked near the front of the school and the four vampires and siren just glared at the back of the car. They were causing all sorts of trouble not to mention the fact that Edward's thirst could kill Bella any second.
"I'm breaking all of the rules anyway; since I'm going to hell..." Kate heard Edward say this as he put his arm around Bella's shoulder.
The couple walked into school leaving the siblings behind in the parking lot without a second glance. Once Edward and Bella went inside, all of those who were staring at the couple then turned to stare at the siblings who were all glaring.
"Oh my god you did not tell me that your sister was dating Edward Cullen," Jessica attacked as soon as Kate was at her locker.
"Trust me, I didn't until just recently," Kate growled.
Jessica went on and on without Kate really listening. That was pretty much how the day had gone. People kept asking her questions about her sister and Edward while she just kept giving them lies and non-answers. This was such a stressor in her life that Kate never went to La Push. Sam went into a rage when she told him what was going on. It took a while but she finally calmed him down and made him see reason that the Cullens were not harming anyone and were still in bounds of the treaty. This didn't make Sam happy.
The rest of the week passed the same way. People were still in shock at the new development at the school, the siblings were still none to pleased, and gossip still circled. When the weekend finally came, Kate was glad for some relief at the whole situation. She was also looking forward to seeing Jacob and Billy again. They decided to come to her neck of the woods.
On Saturday, Bella had asked Kate for her help in washing the car which Kate agreed to so she could get away from studying. They were almost finished when they heard a crunch on the top of the truck. When Kate looked up, she saw Edward standing on the cabin.
"Hey, Edward," Kate said unfazed as she kept washing the truck. After being around vampires and werewolves for almost a month, it took a lot to make her jump out of fright.
"Kate," he greeted.
Bella smiled up at him, "Could you act human? I've got neighbors you know?"
Edward ignored her and gave her an adorably cute grin, "I'm going to take you to my place tomorrow."
He then bent down and pulled the dent from the side of the truck. It was done so nonchalantly that Kate had to laugh. Bella still seemed stunned.
"Thanks...uh...wait, like with your family?" she asked him.
Edward smiled, "Yea."
"What if they don't like me?"
At this Edward and Kate both laughed.
"So you're worried, not because you'll be in a house full of vampires, but because you think they won't approve of you?"
"I'm glad I amuse you."
Edward threw a glance at Kate, "You're invited too."
Kate finally stopped drying off the car, "What?"
"Esme is dying to meet you."
"Isn't that ironic because she'd dead," Kate deadpanned.
Edward threw her an amused look before letting it become serious, "Plus, Carlisle thinks it's time for a family meeting."
Without having to ask Edward what he was talking about Kate felt her stomach do several backflips. Carlisle wanted Kate to tell Bella about herself. He wanted her to tell Bella she was a siren. Kate felt like she could throw up right then and there.
She was saved a response when Edward turned to view something coming in the distance.
"What is it," Bella asked him.
Edward looked angry, "A complication. I'll pick you up tomorrow."
He quickly went back to his car and drove away. Kate watched as he went down the street a wave of understanding passed over her when she saw Billy's truck coming toward her house. When they pulled in she threw down the rag and ran over to see Jacob who was getting his dad out of the truck.
"Well, well, look what the dog dragged in," Kate smiled.
Jacob rolled his eyes, "You got the phrase wrong."
Kate laughed as Bella came up beside her, "Hey, come to visit your truck?"
"Hah, looks good," Jacob told her with a smile, "You got that dent out."
Billy spoke up, "Actually we came to visit your flat screen. First Mariners game of the season. Plus, Jacob here keeps bugging me about seeing you again. He gets enough of Kate down on the rez."
Bella looked at Kate, "You go to the rez?"
"Every weekend," Kate smiled not meeting Billy's gaze because he knew she was there almost every day.
Just then, Charlie came around the corner with two six-packs of beer.
"Vitamin R," he announced giving them to Billy.
"Very good chief! Harry Clearwater's homemade fish fry," Billy said giving the bag to Jacob.
As they all walked up toward the house Billy and Charlie got to talking about Waylon's murder that happened a few weeks ago. Kate knew that a vampire had gotten to him but she wasn't going to let on that she knew.
That night, Charlie and Billy were absorbed in the game and did nothing but eat, drink, and watch. Bella, Jacob, and Kate were all sprawled out on the floor their limbs all over each other in the tiny living room. Kate couldn't help but feeling that this is how they should be. If Quil and Embry were here this would have been perfect.
"There's a bonfire down on the rez tomorrow night. Do you want to come?" Jacob asked Kate before he and Billy left.
"I've got plans actually," Kate told him.
Jacob smirked, "Ohhhh... got a hot date?"
"I wish."
"Tell him I'll kill him if he hurts you."
Kate laughed, "Will do, Jacob."
