Run➳Jacob Black [Book 1]

Saturday couldn't come quick enough for Kate. She had been avoiding everyone afraid that she was going to lash out and hurt them. Bella kept trying to talk to her only to be met by silence. So instead, Bella just kept talking about Edward and the Cullens. Kate was expecting a wedding announcement any day at the rate they were going.

When Charlie drove her down to La Push, Kate practically jumped out of the car and ran toward the garage. She was greeted by the familiar and comforting smell and grease and oil. In the back, she saw Jacob, Quil, and Embry's heads bowed together under the hood of Jacob's Volkswagen Rabbit as she just learned it was called.

"I come bearing gifts," she called out.

The three boys looked up from the car and she held her right hand high in the air. They saw the pizza's that sat perched there and ran at here. Quil grabbed one box while Jacob grabbed the other box.

"Nice to see you too," she said sarcastically, "You act like animals."

"Iiiii aaatttteee," Quil muffled through what she thought was a greeting from all of the pizza stuffed in his mouth.

Jacob threw his arm quickly around her before going back to the pizza.

"Do we need to pay you back for the pizza," Embry asked her.

Kate smirked as she walked toward the back of the garage, "No, I used the money from the last bet you lost."

Embry scowled and grumbled as he took a slice of pizza.

"So I was thinking, we should go outside today," she suggested.

"What about the car," Jacob asked indignantly.

"Your car will still be here next week. Come one, Jacob. Please? For me," Kate pleaded as she put her hands on his arm tugging on it slightly.

Jacob went a little pink in the face and he rubbed the back of his neck with his free hand. Embry and Quil laughed at the two of them.

Jacob sighed, "Alright."

Kate smiled in triumph.

Quil coughed, "Whipped."

Embry and Kate thought it was funny but apparently Jacob didn't because a second later he had smacked Quil in the back of the head. They went outside and kicked around a soccer ball.

"So what's happened in the week of Katherine Swan," Quil asked her.

Kate kicked the ball hard at his face, "Don't call me that."

Quil dodged it. When he came back with it he said, "Sorry, Princess."

This irritated Kate as well, "Don't call me that either."

"Seriously, Kate," Jacob interrupted dribbling the ball, "What's up?"

Kate thought for a moment before deciding to tell the boys the latest headache in her life, "Bella's got a boyfriend. She's dating Edward Cullen."

The events that followed were something you could only see in a movie. Jacob accidentally kicked the ball so hard that it smacked Embry in the stomach. Embry let out an "oomph" but otherwise made no indication that he felt the ball. Quil simply said, "No fucking way," and stood there staring at her. Three pairs of eyes looked at her for an explanation.

"Yea. He's always around picking us up for school. It makes me wish I had my own car. We had dinner with the family last Sunday and let me tell you, that family is weird."

Quil scoffed, "You got that right."

Embry and Jacob just looked darkly across the field at each other neither of them saying a word but seeming to have a whole entire conversation.

"Come on guys. No ESP," she told them.

Jacob ran his hand behind his neck again, "Our families hate them. Like really hate them."

Kate walked over to Embry to pick up the ball that lay at his feet, "I knew that."

But before she could walk back to her spot across from Quil, Embry grabbed the ball causing her to stop moving, "You don't understand, Kate. We're forbidden to see them. They're not good people."

She was once again caught in the crossfire between the vampires and the werewolves. Jacob, Embry, and Quil were still human but all of them have a long line of Quileute magic in their blood. Some hates run too deep.

"They're not bad," she said snatching the ball back, "They're not my favorite people but they're not bad."

Kate went back to her spot and kicked the ball to Jacob who then kicked it to Quil.

"Whatever you say, Kate," Jacob relented but she could still tell that the boys were not happy about her sister dating a Cullen.

"How was your date, Kate?" Quil asked for a change of subject.

"What?"

"Jacob told us that you had a date and had to miss the amazing bonfire that we had on Sunday," Quil continued.

Embry joined in on the fun, "Yea you should have heard Jake. 'Do you really think she has a date?' He was in a right state all night. No doubt hoping you were his date."

Both Kate and Jacob went red at this. Kate purposely avoided looking to her left at Jacob. This time, it was Kate's turn to kick the ball hard at Embry who caught it laughing.

"I didn't have a date you idiots. I went to dinner with my sister," she chose to leave out the part with the Cullens not wanting to bring that topic up again. The boys howled with laughter at her face and kept making fun of her.

"Besides, it's not like you losers could get a date," this caused the boys to stop laughing immediately.

Jacob and Kate both laughed at the expression on their faces and soon they were both dodging the balls that Embry and Quil repeatedly kept kicking at their heads.

That night, Alice was knocking on her window promptly at eleven thirty like she did every night. Kate slid it open and the next second Alice was standing next to her.

"You know that you reek right," Alice said with a small scrunch of her nose.

Kate smiled, "You say that all the time."

"Well it's true. You usually have this subtle wet dog smell. No doubt it's from those mutts you hang around. Not that I'm mad. They're helping you," she amended this quickly at the glare that quickly appeared on Kate's face, "Now you're improving but there's something I want to try tonight before we keep working."

At this, Alice danced out of the room leaving Kate there wondering what she was doing. Her question was answered a second later when Alice came back into the room with Bella trailing behind her.

"No," Kate began.

Bella jumped in, "I agreed. Yesterday when I was at the Cullen's house, Carlisle and I talked about it. We figured since Edward can't hear my thoughts, you might have some difficulty using your magic on me."

Alice had a wide smile on her face, "It's a good test, Kate. This was you'll know if you can hurt your sister."

Kate assumed that her face turned into a deep grimace because Alice quickly said, "He told us what you were afraid of."

"Kate, I can handle this. Okay?" Bella tried to convince her by placing a hand on her arm.

The three girls looked at each other for a while before Kate finally nodded. Alice squealed and clapped her hands.

"Great! Bella you stand here and Kate you stand by the window," she directed them like a ballet.

Kate looked at her sister who stood across the room and when Bella gave her a nod, Kate lifted her sister in the air. Bella gasped at the sensation and watched as Kate sent her rolling in midair. Lifting a real human was much easier than lifting a human form werewolf. It felt as if she wasn't even doing anything. But the glee on Bella's face gave it away. Kate gently sat her sister down and turned to Alice who started to wave her hands.

"Me next," she smiled.

Once again, Kate used her powers. Lifting Alice was almost as easy as lifting Bella though not quite as easy. It required a little more concentration. Alice's face was lit up in a gigantic smile.

She set Alice down and Alice, in her excitement, vampire sped toward Bella and brought her right in front of Kate.

"Okay now, Kate, here's the real test," Alice cautioned, "Whenever you're ready."

Kate gave Bella a questioning glance and once she nodded her head, Kate blinked. She and Alice had progressed so far that it was not necessary for Kate to shut her eyes and prepare. It was almost natural. Bella gasped when she saw her sister's now glowing blue eyes. They were such a contrast from her usual dark brown ones.

Kate stared Bella in the eyes then commanded, "Sit on top of the desk."

There was a slight pause. Bella looked cautiously back at Alice who was staring at Bella in wonder. Kate was confused. Her powers worked on everyone: Alice, Edward, and Carlisle, even the wolves. Bella looked back at Kate confused. Kate tried the command again but once more, Bella was not compelled to do anything.

"It works," Alice announced.

The sudden exclamation made both Bella and Kate jump causing Kate to lose concentration and her eyes turned back to their normal brown.

"Now you can rest easy, Kate," Alice continued.

Alice kept talking but Kate tuned her out and just stared at her sister. For once, since she got these powers, she felt like she couldn't hurt her sister. She felt as if she could actually protect her. With a small smile forming on her face, she finally understood what Sam had told her. The feeling that filled Kate made her feel, not only warm, but powerful. Like she was ready to face her destiny.
