Chapter 2
Alpha Loren Book 4
ELLA
Before long, it was getting late. The sky grew darker, and streaks of fiery red stretched out over the landscape with the fading sunset. I was exhausted just from sitting in a vegetative state, and Luca had been driving since 2 a.m.
âAre you sure you donât want me to drive?â I asked with a yawn after waking up from my tenth nap of the journey.
âNo, donât worry. Iâm fine.â
âWe should stop somewhere. You need a break.â
âWeâll arrive in less than three hours.â
âEven for a coffee, Luca? You look exhausted, and if you fall asleep behind the wheel, we might both die,â I said. âAnd personally, I donât find the concept of that particularly attractive.â
âFine. You can drive, but if I fall asleep, follow signs to the border and wake me up like half an hour before we get there,â he said, driving into a rest stop. âPromise me?â
âSure, whatever.â
He was wearing a serious expression, which, considering Luca was the subject in question, unnerved me.
âNo, not âsure, whatever.â You have to wake me up,â he said, looking into my eyes. âItâs important.â
I nodded and looked away from him. There were a few moments of silence before he opened the car door and got out.
I did the same and was surprised when I was hit by an entourage of hot air. It clung uncomfortably to my skin and dried my throat.
âWhere the fuck are we?â I asked. âItâs so warm.â
âYou donât get out of Washington enough, Els.â
âRemember how I recently got kidnapped and taken to Canada?â I asked, looking up at the clear starry sky.
There wasnât a light for miles around. Well, there wasnât anything at all for miles around. We looked to be in the middle of a barren desert with nothing but gritty sand and cacti for company.
âIsnât the sky pretty?â I said, letting out a deep sigh.
âI guess it is.â
We stood for a few moments leaning against the car in total silence before Luca stood up straight.
âI need a piss,â he announced.
âCanât appreciate the beauty of nature for long with you around, can you?â I grumbled as he walked to the edge of the road.
âElla?â Luca said as I tried my hardest not to listen to his urine hit the sand.
âYes, my darling.â
âHow do girls pee if thereâs no toilet to sit on?â
I placed my fingers on my lips, hiding my smile.
âWith great difficulty,â I said. âWhat made you ask such an odd question? Except for the fact that you are Luca of courseâ¦â
âI saw these things on the internet⦠I think itâs called a femme-pee or something, and itâs basically a funnel that girls can pee down like a dick.â
âThe internet is a dark place.â
âIâm glad I have a built-in straw to piss through,â he said.
âThank you, Luca, for that slightly uncomfortable description of your penis,â I said with a grimace. âAnd are you done? How much liquid can you possibly store in your bladder?â
âI had a lot to drink.â
âI can see, uh, hear that.â
âOkay, done.â
For the next two and a half hours, I drove. Luca fell asleep the second he shut his eyes and didnât wake up until I shook him after seeing signs for the border saying only five miles away.
âWeâre five miles away,â I said as he groaned.
He shot up straight.
âFive miles?! You were meant to wake me up way earlier than this. I told you, didnât I? I made it very clear?â
âIâm sorry,â I said. âWhatâs the huge problem?â
âStop the car. We need to swap back. Now. Now. Now.â
âOkay!â
The road was completely clear, so I ground the car to a halt and unbuckled my seat belt. I was about to open the car door and walk around, but Luca had other ideas.
âJust climb across,â he said, pulling me back and climbing over to the driverâs seat with his large body.
âJust?â I asked as he struggled with as much elegance as a dying swan.
âCome on. We donât have time to fuck about!â
âThere is not enough space for this,â I said, trying to squeeze around him to the passengerâs seat. âWalking around would have been far easier. And your ass is in my face.â
âYour ass is in my face,â he said, trying to get his incredibly long legs over.
âNot my fault that daddy longlegs over here is taking up all the room,â I said as I decided the best route would be to slither over the dashboard to the passenger seat.
When I was finally sat down, an abrupt laugh sounded from the driverâs seat.
âWhat?â I asked.
âItâs justâ¦,â he said with another giggle. âYou looked like a snakish seal as you slid over the dashboard.â
âAnd you looked like an obese giraffe,â I remarked.
There was then an awkward pause for a few moments as Luca restarted the car.
âThat was uncalled for,â he said.
âIâm sorry. I didnât mean it. You arenât obese, youâre just strong,â I answered, slapping his chest.
Ow, that hurt my hand.
âLuca, what the fuck!â I screamed as he veered off the road and downhill across the sand.
âRelax...weâre going the back way,â Luca replied.
âThe fucking back way!?â I exclaimed. âWeâre entering a country, not a party! This is totally illegal.â
âDo I need to remind you that Iâm going to collect a shipment of weed to bring into the United States of America?â he asked. âThereâs nothing legal about this operation.â
A few minutes later, the ground had flattened off, and Luca brought the car to a stop. He then flashed the headlights in a strange way, and a group of figures emerged out of the darkness.
âEleonora DeâMeritchi remember,â he reminded me.
I nodded, my heart beating faster at the sight of the men.
âDo I get out?â I asked.
âYes. Theyâll see you and want to know who you are,â he said, before opening the car door.
âHola,â Luca said in a surprisingly good Spanish accent once we were back out in the heat of the desert.
âWhoâs the bitch?â the man at the front of a group of five or six asked before even saying hello back.
I wasnât a fan of the derogatory term, but I also wasnât about to call him out on it.
Hereâs why: he was a few years older than us, wore baggy trousers, a loose grubby T-shirt, and a bandanna. The other men were all similar looking and all had their eyes on me with intense glares.
After considering the trade they were in, and the menacing expressions they held, I didnât doubt for a second that they were all armed and willing to shoot at any moment.
âMy cousin Eleonora. Iâm teaching her the ways of this business,â Luca said, placing a hand on my shoulder.
âHola, Eleonora,â the man said, stepping closer to me.
He reached out his hand, placing a finger under my chin.
âAnd why would a pretty girl like you want to be in this business? You know itâs not safe...particularly for such aââ
âGuillermo, leave her alone. She has a mate,â Luca said, slapping his hand away from me.
âWatch out, guys,â he jeered. âShe got a mate.â
They all laughed and sniggered as he turned back to me.
âAnd what does he think about this?â he asked, pushing my hair off my shoulder. âA nice mark you have there. You mated to an alpha or what?â
âJust give me the shipment,â Luca said.
âWatch who youâre telling what to do, kid,â Guillermo said to Luca. âAnd relax. Weâre just having a little fun with your lil cuzzie here. Got any children, baby?â
âNo,â I lied.
âI didnât think so. That ass doesnât look like itâs borne a child. Itâs far too sweet,â he replied, running a finger along my hip.
âI have customers waiting,â Luca said.
âAnd I have a proposal. You want her to learn about the drug business, but you ainât even a dealer. Give her to me. Iâll teach her,â Guillermo said.
âNo,â Luca replied. âShe stays with me.â
âCome on, Romano,â he said. âDo you not trust me to take good care of her?â
âShe has a mate, and heâll want her back.â
âI know. I know,â he replied, putting his hands up. âItâs a shame, but I respect that.â
âEleanora, get in the car,â Luca said, nodding at me.
I stepped toward the car, glad to get away from the scary man. He watched me for a few moments before reaching into the back of his trousers and withdrawing something even scarier: a gun.
Fuck, that escalated quickly.
He pointed it at Luca, who put his hands up before gesturing to two of his men. They approached me and grabbed my wrists as the gun continued to be pointed at Luca.
Ordinarily, I would have put up a fight, but considering that could be the difference between Luca living another minute or not, I thought better of it.
âMove and Iâll shoot.â
For a few agonizing moments, there was total, still silence. Guillermo stepped over to me, not taking his eyes or the gun off Luca. He placed his hand around my waist and pulled me closer to him.
I could do nothing but stand and tolerate him. Nowhere to move to, nothing to hit him across the head with.
âJuan, Fabio. Get the shipment,â he barked at a different two men after withdrawing himself.
They reached into the bush and pulled out three big duffel bags.
âMiami this time, señor,â he said. âDo you got last monthâs money?â
âItâs in the trunk,â he replied, his hands still in surrender.
âThen what are you waiting for?â he asked impatiently. âFucking get it.â
Luca strode to the trunk of his car and retrieved a duffel bag, all with the gun still pointed at him.
He brought it back to where Guillermo waited.
He reached out his hand to take it, and for a split second, his eyes flicked down. Luca seized the opportunity and managed to render Guillermo motionless in his arms with his own gun to his head.
Every single man in the circle withdrew their own gun and pointed it at Luca.
âYou shoot me, I shoot him,â Luca said. âGive me my cousin.â
âHow about you shoot me, we shoot her?â Guillermo replied from Lucaâs grip as one of the men put their gun to my head.
âWell, we really have a situation on our hands here, donât we, boys?â Luca said. âOr you do at least. Iâm not the one on the fast track to losing my best trafficker.â
âWe have other traffickers just as willing,â Guillermo spat.
âBut are they white? Do they have American accents? American citizenship?â Luca asked, looking around the circle.
âNo...theyâre Mexican. And Mexicans donât glide through a border like a ârespectableâ-looking white man does. What can I say? The world is racist.â
âWe have your white little bitch,â Guillermo replied. âNothing says innocent more than a white man other than a white woman. The worldâs sexist too.â
I opened my mouth, but Luca shot me a look. Heâs right. Me and my mouth are infamous for making bad situations worse.
âShe wonât work for you if you kill her favorite cousin,â Luca said.
âShe donât have a choice in the matter,â Guillermo answered.
âSays the man in a headlock,â I mumbled under my breath.
The man holding me squeezed my arm tighter and pushed the gun harder against my skin.
âShe got attitude,â Guillermo said with a smirk. âI like a woman whoâs a bit...achorada.â
With that, I grabbed the gun at my head, twisted it around, and pushed it against the head of the man holding me. Iâm not sure what exactly gave me the ability to do that. A spur of both adrenaline and anger probably.
âHow do you like that, Guillermo?â I asked.
âYou gonna let a chica beat you like that?â he asked the man practically shaking with the gun at his head. âDonât be such a pucha.â
âElla podrÃa matarme, Guillermo,â he replied in a high-pitched voice.
I havenât done Spanish since high school, so I honestly had no idea what he said, but Guillermo rolled his eyes.
âHey, bitch,â he said, looking at me. âShow us your tits and weâll let you go, no trouble.â
âYou arenât in a position to ask for anything, Guillermo,â I said, looking from the gun at his head to the gun at his friendâs head.
âYou couldnât hurt a fly,â he replied with a smirk. âNeither could Romano. Youâre both white as fuck.â
With that, Luca moved the gun from Guillermoâs head and pointed it at the foot of the man who had been holding me.
The bang sounded, and the man squealed.
âWill you take us seriously now, or do we need to show you again?â I asked, pushing the gun into the manâs mouth as he whimpered. âWouldnât be the first man Iâve killed. Might not be the last.â
Guillermo remained quiet.
âUnload your guns,â I ordered the rest of them.
They complied and dropped the contents of their weapons onto the ground.
âNow chuck them as far as you can.â
âYou just gonna let a girl boss you around?â Guillermo said.
I held the man tighter.
âDo as I say or I will shoot him,â I hissed.
They all threw their guns. I gave Guillermo a sardonic smile before releasing the man.
âThis could have been so much easier,â I said as Luca released Guillermo too. âDonât fuck with me.â
âSee you next month, Guillermo,â Luca said as we both got into the car and sped away.
âYou fucking showed them!â Luca exclaimed. âBadass motherfucker!â
âYeah, and you almost got us killed,â I scolded. âWhat the fuck was that? I thought you were âfriendlyâ with them?â
âI was. But theyâre like little kids. As soon as you say no to them, they hate you,â he replied. âAnd what the hell do I do with this?â he asked, waving the gun as he drove as fast as the car would go.
âKeep it,â I replied, taking it out of his hand and shoving it into the glove box. âIt might be useful.â
