Kevin did want to be their scapegoat. The more he pondered the situation, the more alarmed he became.
âDad! You canât be thinking about throwing me under the bus, right? Iâm your sonâinâlaw!â Kevin exclaimed fearfully.
âWhy would you ever think that, Kevin? I couldnât possibly bear to make you the scapegoat! What would happen to Jessica if the authorities arrested you?â Saul assured with a chuckle.
He did not mean it, of course.
With how influential the Masseys were now, plenty of people would love to marry Jessica.
Still, Saul did not intend to let Kevin take the fall unless it was their last resort.
âThanks, Dad! I was worried for a second there,â Kevin said with a sigh of relief.
But from that point onward, he had his guard up against Jessica and Saul.
The two of them were vicious. They had not been backed into a corner yet, but once their lives were at stake, they would certainly throw him under the bus!
Kevin knew it was time to plan for his own future.
Well end
If he continued to follow the Massey familyâs orders blindly, he could very up being their scapegoat.
âWe h
havenât even said anything yet, loser, and youâre already scared stiff. Why did I marry someone so useless?â Jessica scoffed in contempt.
Kevin dared not rebuke her insults.
The Masseys were more powerful than the Copelands now, so all he could do was put up with
the verbal abuse.
Despite being ridiculed, his silence only served to make Jessica look down on him even more.
He was such a loser.
âDad, who do you think we should make the scapegoat?â Jessica asked.
âEric, of course! Heâs the most suitable person!â Saul declared with a smile.
Jessicaâs eyes brightened at once.
âYouâre absolutely right! Ericâs the one whoâs been handling everything. We, the Masseys, had no idea what he was up to! Thatâs settled. If they investigate the family, weâll just pin the blame on him! Once heâs gone, nothing will happen to us,â Jessica declared gleefully.

Eric was merely a distant cousin of hers, and for the sake of protecting the Massey family, they had to sacrifice him.
âExactly. When the time comes, weâll just pretend to be unaware of the situation. Weâll say that Eric started the loan shark business on his own.
âIt has nothing to do with us. That way, even if the authorities investigate us, they wonât find evidence against us!â Saul added with a smug smile.
âHahaha! This is such a great idea, Dad!â
Jessica and Saul exchanged looks before chortling happily.
Meanwhile, Kevin felt chills running down his spine.
Why had he never realized just how cruel and merciless Saul and Jessica were?
They would disregard the lives of others for the sake of their best interests.
Without their support, how could Eric have dared to run illegal operations in Southlake City? He was merely one of their distant relatives!
At the end of the day, they had been using Eric as a pawn all along. Now that they ran into a crisis, they wanted to abandon him and shove all the blame on him.
Although Kevin was disgruntled, he did not say anything. He would be a fool to stand up for Eric at this time. If Eric did no
become the scapegoat, he would probably be the one who took
the fall!
âWhy are you just standing there?â Jessica snapped as she shot Kevin a contemptuous glance.â
Get Eric here.â
âGot it. Iâll bring him over right away,â Kevin said with a nod.
He went off and did as told.
âMr. Massey, Ms. Massey,â Eric greeted respectfully.
He behaved obediently in front of the Masseys.
If he wanted to establish himself in Southlake City, he had to butter up to Saul and Jessica.
âDo you know why I called you over, Eric?â Saul asked as he eyed the clueless Eric.
The look on Saulâs face gave Eric an ominous feeling.
âAre you refusing to admit your wrongdoings, Eric? Youâve been using the Massey familyâs influence to bully innocent people and break the law! The authorities are about to investigate you now. Are you not going to repent?â Saul abruptly shouted.
Eric was dumbfounded. What was going on?

Still in a daze, Eric said, âMr. Massey, I did everything under your orders. If not for you, I would never dare to-â
âSilence! When did I ever tell you to engage in any sort of criminal activity? The Masseys have always been decent and upright members of society!
âYou did those shady dealings on your own accord! They have nothing to do with the Masseys! How dare you try to frame us?â Saul roared.
âWhatâ¦â
But in an instant, Eric realized what was happening. Saul was trying to make him the scapegoat for the Massey familyâs crimes!
âWhat do you have to say for yourself? I let you handle some of the familyâs businesses because I trusted you. How was I supposed to know that youâd do so many illegal things behind my back?â Jessica quickly spoke up angrily.
âHahaha. I see how it is! Do you two have any decency? Everything I did was under your orders, but now that something has gone wrong, youâre trying to make me your scapegoat, huh? How cunning of you!â Eric scoffed.
âThatâs right. We plan on letting you take the fall, Eric. Weâll hand you over to the authorities so that you can confess to your crimes. If you know whatâs good for you, youâll cooperate and confess to your crimes-â
Saul was midway through his sentence when Eric cut him off.
âIn your dreams!â he bellowed. âYouâre a monster, Saul. You want me to take the fall, huh? Well, if I go down, Iâm taking all of you down with me!
âIâll expose all of the Massey familyâs crimes! Since you want to ruin my life, Iâll make yours at living hell, too!â
Eric was once a street thug. He was no pushover!
If the Masseys were going to treat him this way, he would not hold back either.
He could always tell the authorities everything. Perhaps his confession could lead to a more
lenient sentence.
He did not care what would happen to the Massey family after that.
âTake us down with you, eh? You wish! Whether you like it or not, youâre going to take the blame for this. If you dare say a word about our involvement, donât blame me for not showing any mercy to your family!
âEven if you donât care about yourself, Iâm sure you care about your wife and family, right?â Saul threatened viciously.

Eric froze.
He abruptly realized he had been tricked this whole time.
He did everything the Masseys asked of him. But now that they ran into a crisis, Saul was abandoning him and throwing him under the bus.
âSaul, you bastard! Youâre a monster! How can you even think of such a vile thing to do?â Eric fumed.
âYou donât have a choice. If you agree to take the fall, youâll still get to spend the rest of your life in prison. But if you donât, your entire family will die because of you!â Saul declared
smugly.
Eric sank into despair.
