Jimmy
The Werewolf Chronicles
Bambi
âAre youâ¦Jimmy?â I asked softly.
The girl looked surprised that I knew her name, stopping under the light and not taking another step.
Realizing she couldnât see me in the shadows, I took a step forward. She recoiled slightly, but I continued to speak softly.
âMy name is Bambi, and Iâm not going to hurt you. Can I come closer?â
She timidly nodded her head, and I took another step so that I was out of the shadows.
Jimmyâs mouth parted slightly, but she closed it again, staying silent.
Remembering what that witch, Devina, had done to me when I tried to scream, I wondered if she had cast a curse that took Jimmyâs voice, the way she took my mateâs sight.
âAre you mute?â
âN-no,â she stammered. âSorry, I just havenât talked for a few days.â
âThank the Goddess,â I said, clutching my chest. âI thought that witch took your voice.â
âNo, she hasnât hurt meâ¦yet,â Jimmy replied, her voice dry and raspy.
âDo you know where we are?â I asked.
âNo clue, but weâre underground. I think these are tunnels, but I havenât found an exit.â
âDid Devina take you too?â I said, taking hold of her hand. âI saw you on TV. You were reported missing.â
âYes, she comes daily to bring food and water, but Iâm not sure why sheâs keeping me here. I think she knows Matthias, but I donât think he knows Iâm here.â
I jolted at the mention of his name. âYou know Matthias?â
âYes, he lived at the Northern Pack. Thatâs where Iâm from originally.â
âHe was living in the Northern Pack?â I asked, astounded.
âHe was very sickly but very kind to me. When I decided to move away for school, he even paid for all my tuition,â she said quietly.
I was so confused. Were we talking about the same Matthias?
The murderer whoâd massacred the entire Northern Pack?
âJimmy, do you know who Matthias is? Who he really is?â
âIâ¦I thought I did,â she said sadly. âI received a letter from Alpha Rudolph while I was in the city, warning me that if something happened to him, Matthias was to blame. Iâ¦I didnât understand it, but then a few days ago, I heard news that the Northernâ¦â
She choked back her words as she began crying. âThe Northern Pack was dead. All of them.â
I pulled Jimmy into a tight embrace. âI knowâ¦I saw it with my own eyes. It was horrible.â
âI canât believe Matthias would be behind something so unspeakable,â she said, sniffling.
We knew two very different versions of Matthias, but this wasnât the time to burst her bubble. I needed her to keep talking.
âWhat else did the letter from Alpha Rudolph say?â
âItâ¦it just said to find Alpha Ekon, but I donât know who that is,â she said meekly.
I was amazed at how little this girl seemed to know. Had she been living in a damn cave her whole life?
âIs your family from the Northern Pack?â I asked.
âThey were, but my parents died when I was very young, and Alpha Rudolph acted as an older brother to me,â she replied.
I suddenly felt awful as a realization hit me.
~This girl is meâ¦~
~Or at least the version of me from four months ago.~
I was living in the country, sheltered by my brother, my parents dead since I was a child.
I didnât know who Ekon was before Iâd set eyes on him at the gala and realized we were mates.
I didnât know ~anything~ about the Great War.
I didnât have one clue who Matthias was or what terrible things heâd done in the past.
I was completely oblivious to anything outside myself.
It was amazing how much my perspective had changed in such a short time.
And this girl had yet to see or understand the world outside herself yet.
I couldnât chastise this clueless girl for not knowing about the world, not when I saw so much of myself in her.
âAnd Matthiasâ¦did he everâ¦hurt you?â I asked carefully.
âNo, he would never!â she said assuredly.
âWhy was he paying for your tuition? What was he to you?â
I think her face flushed red, but it was hard to tell in the darkness.
âWell, to tell you the truth, I think heâ¦he was in love with me.â
I lurched forward and grabbed Jimmy by the shoulders, startling her.
âJimmy, please tell me that Matthias is not your mate,â I said, terrified.
âNo, of course not,â she said, stunned. âI donât think of him like that. He always said he felt drawn to me, but I think he only liked me because I helped take care of him when he was sick.â
âAnd heâs not sick anymore?â I swallowed hard.
âHe was getting better the last time I saw him,â she replied.
His rise to power was already beginning. And it had been happening for years, right in plain sight.
It seemed that if Matthias was here, Jimmy would know, but if he wasnât here, where was he?
âDo you have a mate?â Jimmy asked suddenly.
âI, uhâ¦yes, I do,â I replied.
I missed him with every fiber of my being.
âWill he come for you?â
It was a simple question, but one I didnât have the answer to.

Holly
Girls, meet me at the pack library
Holly
Itâs time
Victoria
Iâm ready.
Ela
me too
Ela
my car is coming straight from the airport
Holly
Good
Holly
Because weâre going to find Bambi
Holly
And bring her back home
Holly
We were back in the old storage room that used to double as our investigation headquarters but now just held mops and brooms.
Weâd all found out about Bambiâs kidnapping from Max, when heâd first started looking a couple days ago.
He swore us to secrecy. He didnât want the Council to make it public, fearing for her safety.
It was for the best anyway. The Council wouldnât get anything done.
But we sure as hell would.
I started drawing a circle on the floor with chalk made from a moon rock, and then I drew a pentagram in the middle.
âAre you sure youâre ready for this?â Victoria asked nervously. âThis is a really advanced spell.â
Iâd been training day and night, and Iâd really started to improve.
It felt so good what we had done, exposing Matthias, and I wanted to grow more powerful as a witch, not for my own benefit but to help othersâto protect them from Matthias, Devina, and her dark magic.
Ever since Iâd made that decision, I felt like something had unlocked inside me.
âIâm ready,â I said, focusing on perfecting the pentagram. âBut we donât exactly have a choice. We have to act now.â
A faint siren began to wail in the distance, and we all looked at each other.
âWhat is that?â Victoria cringed.
âNothing good,â I replied.
The door suddenly swung open, and Kalindi walked in, spear in one hand and the other hand on her hip.
âSis, what are you doing here?â Ela asked in surprise.
âMaking sure ~you~ donât get into trouble,â she said sternly. âAnd it looks like thatâs exactly what youâre doing. What is all this?â
âHolly is performing a locator spell so that we can find Bambi,â Ela responded. âPlease, Kalindi, donât try to stop us. We have to do this.â
We all looked at her, expecting a lashing of words and an eviction from the pack house, but instead, she smiled.
âIâm not going to stop you; Iâm going to stand guard for you! But you need to hurry up. Weâre on high alert.â
âHigh alert?â Victoria looked startled. âYou meanâ¦â
âRogues. Theyâve been sighted in the area. A pack of them.â
âA pack of roguesâ¦what a fucking contradiction,â Ela spat.
âMaybe so, but theyâre feeling confident. News of Matthias has traveled fast, no matter how hard the Council has tried to suppress it. So, you need to do this ~quick~.â Kalindi tapped her spear on the ground rapidly to prove her point.
âUnderstood.â I nodded.
~No pressure or anything.~
âIâll be outside,â she said, closing the door behind her.
âOkay, letâs fucking do this,â Ela said as Victoria pulled a small velvet bag from her purse. âDid you bring everything?â
âYes, Ryland got it all from her bedroom, things she left behind,â Victoria said, handing the bag to me.
I examined the contentsâa hairbrush with strands of her hair, a framed photo of Bambi with Max, and a necklace that Ekon had given to her as a gift.
I dumped the items into the middle of the pentagram. âEveryone gather around. This next part isnât going to be pretty, but itâs necessary.â
I pulled a towel off a small cage sitting next to me, where a tiny bluebird chirped happily.
~I really hope I trained enough for this.~
I grasped the bluebird in my hand and held it over the items in the pentagram.
In one swift movement, I snapped its neck and it stopped chirping, causing Victoria to shut her eyes tightly.
I sliced the birdâs belly and let its blood drip onto Bambiâs possessions.
âMay the sacrifice of this creature give me the sight I need to find my friend, wherever she may be. Its death will not be in vain and may prevent the death of one who still lives,â I chanted. âLet me see through the eyes of another!â
The room began spinning, and I felt as though I was leaving my own body.

~Whatâs that below me? Itâsâ¦~
~Holy shit, Iâm hundreds of feet off the ground!~
~Iâmâ¦Iâm flying!~
~Did it work?~
~I thought I passed out.~
~Oh my Goddess, Iâm not in my own body.~
~Iâm in the body of a bird.~
~This is so, so weird.~
~The things I do for my friendsâ¦~
~Okay, where am I? This looks familiar.~
~I recognize that dirt road.~
~And that patch of forest.~
~Are thoseâ¦ruins?~
~Ohâ¦Goddessâ¦~

âHOLLY!â Ela was screaming right in my face, and Victoria was standing next to her, looking concerned.
I mustâve been gone for only thirty seconds.
âYou scared us!â Victoria huffed. âYour eyes glazed over, and you fell backwards.â
âGuys,â I said, starting to get excited, âI know where she is!â
Before we had a chance to celebrate, Kalindi burst through the door.
âWe have to go NOW!â she shouted, her eyes urgent. âTheyâre here!â
