Chapter 577 - Five Hundred Eighty-three
Rebirth of a Farming Wife
â`
Su Wenyue arrived at the military camp, and Liu Xiu knew about it instantly. After experiencing previous betrayals and many other issues, Liu Xiu started paying more attention to certain matters and simultaneously increased his control over the military camp, ensuring that he was informed of every little movement.
âHan Yuâs wife has come?â Liu Xiuâs eyebrows raised when he heard the report from his subordinates, he put down the pen in his hand, his countenance a mix of anticipation and anxiety, which was hard to read. Since he was in front of his confidants, Liu Xiu did not particularly hide his thoughts.
âYes, she arrived not long ago, and she has already been taken to General Hanâs tent.â
âThatâs good. Han Yu has sustained such serious injuries; he needs good care. Having his wife come to take care of him will certainly be more meticulous and proper than others.â Liu Xiu seemed to express happiness for Han Yu, but his subordinate couldnât quite believe that their master was truly happy. The masterâs thoughts were becoming more and more inscrutable. Though he guessed as much in his mind, he did not dare show any of it on his face and just agreed with Liu Xiuâs words.
âIndeed, my men said Madam Han brought a lot of things with her, reportedly including a considerable amount of tonics and medicinal materials, undoubtedly for nourishing General Hanâs health. With Madam Han looking after General Han, My Lord need not worry.â
âOf course, Han Yu and his wife have always had a great relationship. If he saw his wife coming, he would probably be overjoyed.â As Liu Xiu spoke, a smile finally appeared on his face, happy for Han Yu, but soon after recalling something, that smile faded, replaced by conflict and contradiction.
Liu Xiu also knew he shouldnât, regardless of whether Su Wenyue was the person he had been looking for or not. Merely considering she was Han Yuâs wife, he shouldnât have any other thoughts. A friendâs wife must not be coveted, especially since Han Yu was a good brother who saved his life and a friend, as well as one of his most talented and loyal subordinates, his right-hand man. Regardless of the reason, any such thoughts were inappropriate.
Yet sometimes knowing is one thing, and managing to do so is quite another. Liu Xiu now had fewer complicated thoughts, just wanting to see Su Wenyue, to confirm whether she was the woman who saved him that day. As for the rest, he hadnât thought that far ahead.
Thinking this, Liu Xiu took a step towards where Han Yu was, but upon reaching the entrance of the tent, he realized how foolish his actions were. Indeed, wanting to see Su Wenyue was not something to be done at this time. At this moment, everyone knew that Han Yu and his wife would need to spend some tender time together upon reuniting. Anyone with any sense wouldnât disturb them.
The more he thought about it, the less Liu Xiu could restrain himself. Although many events had led him to trust Han Yu completely, everyone has a dark side. The thought that Su Wenyue might be the person he was desperately searching for and the idea of her with other men was unbearable. Wouldnât going there and interrupting be just perfect?
But as much as he thought about it, Liu Xiu eventually let his better judgment prevail and refrained from making such a foolish move. He knew the kind of man Han Yu was. Any inappropriate behavior on his part would surely raise Han Yuâs suspicions and create a rift between them. Han Yu was a man of great talent and loyalty, too valuable a resource to lose. Besides, it was all just speculation; he couldnât be certain that Han Yuâs wife was indeed the person he was searching for.
The subordinate felt that his masterâs thoughts were increasingly hard to grasp. It seemed like the master was in a hurry to do something, but then he stopped and stood there, seemingly deep in thought.
âMy Lord?â Seeing that Liu Xiu had been standing there in a daze for a while, the subordinate called out softly.
Liu Xiu snapped back to reality and saw the puzzled and worried look on his subordinateâs face. Naturally, he wasnât going to enlighten him; instead, he gave an order: âSend someone to look after Han Yu; his wife is not used to the poor conditions of the military camp, being new to the place.â
After saying this, Liu Xiu added, âAlso, keep an eye out for any developments over there, and report back to me at any time.â
âYes, I understand. I will arrange it immediately.â The subordinate was taken aback by such orders from Liu Xiu, wondering if he had misread the situation. It felt highly inappropriate to him that the master was showing such excessive concern for Madam Han. But with the masterâs authority being greater than ever, he could only comply with the order, daring not to raise any doubts or objections.
After the subordinate left, Liu Xiu returned to his tent and sat down at his previous desk, but he did not continue reviewing official documents. Instead, he pulled a silk scarf from his chest and began to space out with a look of someone troubled by emotions.
âCould it really be you?â Liu Xiu whispered softly.
ââ-
Su Wenyue conversed with Han Yu for a while and, considering that he was still injured and that she had come to take care of him, it made no sense for Han Yu to look after her in return. Thus, she refrained from further conversation and took her companion to the temporarily set-up small kitchen to get busy. She personally made some light and tasty dishes for Han Yu and also stewed a pigeon soup to nourish his body.
Su Wenyueâs culinary skills were indisputable. Even ordinary dishes became distinct delicacies once they came out of her hands, never tasting bland in the slightest.
âHow is it? I havenât cooked in a long time; my skills havenât declined, have they?â Su Wenyue watched Han Yu eat and asked with a smile.
âNot bad at all, my wifeâs skills are still as exceptional as ever, delicious, just too delicious!â Han Yu savored the meal specially prepared by his wife with immense satisfaction. One could hardly be picky about the food in the military camp, just being full was usually enough. Although Liu Xiu had arranged for a separate chef for him because of his injury, the taste could not compare to what he got at home, let alone the dishes prepared by Su Wenyue. He was not praising his own wife unduly, but her cooking talent was simply unparalleled. She must have learned it from somewhere outstanding.@@novelbin@@
âAs long as itâs delicious, you should eat more. Look at how youâve slimmed down these days. You need to nourish yourself properly. Iâll cook for you every day from now on and ensure you are taken care of well.â She did know her meals wouldnât disappoint, but she still felt quite pleased by Han Yuâs compliments. In fact, she was a lazy person and hadnât cooked for a long time since there was a chef at home and a little girl proficient in cooking. Now, her desire to care for Han Yu had her back at it, and she even joined him in sipping the soup.
âAs long as itâs tasty, you should eat more.â Su Wenyue said with a curved smile.
Originally, Han Yu was recuperating from his injuries in the camp, but since Su Wenyue arrived, things couldnât continue as before. Although people respected Han Yuâs status and did not speak out, it wasnât convenient for a woman to frequent a place solely occupied by men. Therefore, Han Yu decided to take Su Wenyue with him to a small town not far away, where they rented a little courtyard.
