Chapter 28

Thirster 2467: 27.

Thirster 2467

Marilyn waits but she opens her eyes when nothing happens and the gun is off her. Dr. Sammis stood in front of her with Pierce's arm around his neck.

"Drop the gun." Pierce whispers in his ear through gritted teeth. Marilyn moves out of the way so Dr. Sammis doesn't do anything quick and shoot her. Dr. Sammis gasps for air but doesn't let go. Pierce purses his lips into a thin line  and uses his other hand to grab it out of his grip. He tosses it across the floor and pulls Dr. Sammis close to him.

Pierce pushes him into the room when he hears soldiers and Agent Doloman from far.

"Marilyn come' on and shut the door." They all go into the room and before shutting the door Marilyn looks at Lee. Her throat becomes tight and before she feels tears grow in her eyes she shuts the door.

Pierce pushes Dr. Sammis down on a chair roughly and grabs his walkie-talkie. Marilyn locks the door and presses her ear against the it.

"Sammis, where are you?" Agent Doloman says through the walkie-talkie. Pierce brings the device up to Dr. Sammis lips.

"Tell them you left the area." Pierce demands but Dr. Sammis doesn't say anything but gaze at him. "Tell him!" He shouts louder, grabbing one of his fingers and breaking his bone. Dr. Sammis holds in a yelp by biting his tongue in pain.

Pierce holds down the button to respond and Dr. Sammis licks his lips that are covered in his sweat.

"I evacuated." He responds before Pierce let's go of the button.

"Okay checking the halls. Marilyn is-" Pierce crushes the walkie-talkie in his grasp and drops the remains on the ground. Marilyn hears Agent Doloman and soldiers jog past the door and down the hall. When their voices vanish she turns to Pierce and Dr. Sammis. They're staring at each other with anger within their eyes.

Marilyn ignores them and goes to the vaccine fridge where the cure is in. She sees that the lock is still on and Marilyn groans.

"Where is the key?"

"To what." Dr. Sammis says to her. Marilyn points at the lock on the fridge and Pierce furrows his eyebrows.

"What's that?" He asks and when Dr. Sammis tries to stand from sitting Pierce pushes him back down.

"The cure for vampirism." Marilyn says to him slowly. Pierce stares at her with an expressionless look on his face.

"That's impossible."

"Well it's right here in front of you." Marilyn ignores Pierce and gazes at Dr. Sammis. "Key now."

"I don't have it. It's in my office." He replies back annoyed after rolling his eyes. Pierce sighs and walks to the fridge, grabbing the lock and tugging it. The metal pieces break apart and he tosses it on the floor. Marilyn opens the latch and a cold breeze escapes the fridge when she opens it.

She slowly picks up a vial and examines the cure. It looks like a normal liquid medicine that you inject into someone. She grabs a bag and starts putting the other vials in it.

"You think that's going to be enough for every vampire in the world?" Dr. Sammis says while chuckling to himself. Marilyn stops and turns to him.

"Then tell me you dick where the list of ingredients are."

"No." Pierce grabs his index finger and snaps it to the side. Marilyn flinches after hearing the bone crack. Dr. Sammis grips the handle of the chair with his other hand and takes a deep breath.

"In the draw on the left." He blurts out and Marilyn proceeds her way there. She opens the draw and scavenges through the papers until she finds it. She folds it up and slips it in her back pocket.

"Pierce please pack the rest of the vials." Marilyn says to him while she looks through the other draws. Pierce turns his head away from Dr. Sammis and goes to the fridge. Marilyn looks over her shoulder and sees Dr. Sammis pull out a pocket knife from his lab coat. "Watch out!"

Pierce turns and Dr. Sammis leaps towards him. The knife goes down on Pierce's shoulder and he pushes him against the table. The bag falls and the vials shatter when they hit the ground.

"No!" Marilyn shouts. Pierce tries to push Dr. Sammis off of him but they're even with strength. Pierce hasn't fed at all so being weak is making him tired. Marilyn runs behind Dr. Sammis and grabs him by the shoulders. He turns and pushes her with one arm. She tumbles back and falls into the chair.

Pierce grows furious and grabs the knife in his shoulder. He pulls it out in one swift move and strikes Dr. Sammis on the side of his throat. Dr. Sammis's body goes rigid when Pierce pulls it out. Marilyn looks up from the floor when blood gushes out of his artery.

Pierce bares his long fangs before ripping his teeth into his neck. Dr. Sammis gargles with blood that came up his throat. Pierce drank from him until he was full then pried his head off his body. He stands there with blood dripping off his chin.

"I told you I'd kill you." Pierce says while looking down at Dr. Sammis's dead body. Pierce gazes at Marilyn while running his sleeve across his mouth. Marilyn's heart is beating rapidly. For some reason she's afraid of what Pierce is gonna do next. However she relaxes when he bents down and caresses her cheek.

"I'm sorry." He whispers to her. Marilyn sighs in his hold and looks up at him.

"For what?"

"Not being there to protect you." His eyes are soft and welcoming so she leans in and kisses his cheek before hugging him close. They break apart when she sees the one vial of cure on the table. It was the first one she took out and didn't put in the bag. The rest are shattered and all over the floor.

"Pierce." She slowly stands, ignoring the aching pain all over her body... especially her arm. She softly picks up the vial and turns to Pierce. "It's the last dosage of the cure unless I make more but I don't know how long it'll take." Pierce stands there like a lost dog. He stares at Marilyn then the vial in her hand. "You'll be human again."

"We don't even know if it actually works." He exclaims and Marilyn nods her head.

"Yes we do I saw a tape of Sammis do it on a vampire and he became human." Pierce takes a step closer and holds the vial in his hand. Does he really want to become human again? Although he never thought of becoming one again he kind of misses it. Marilyn opened his eyes back up and made him realize how it is being human. How he felt emotion. But on the other hand being a vampire is powerful. He can do whatever he wants, kill whoever he wants and not feel a bit bad about it.

However, being locked in here made him feel vulnerable.

"There will be a lockdown, I repeat a lockdown in the area. Everybody evacuate or you will be trapped and killed." The speaker says above them. It was Agent Doloman's voice announcing to the whole Area that they're going to lock down the whole place.

"You need to go." Pierce informs Marilyn but she shakes her head.

"No I can't leave you in here."

"They will kill you! I will be okay."

"Pierce," Marilyn's voice is hushed because he grabs her chin. He brings her eyes to his and he looks into them darkly. If she isn't going to leave willingly he's going to demand her to leave. He never thought he'd have to use his persuasion on her but in this life or death situation he has to. "Please don't." She winces because she can't move from his hold.

"I want you to leave here and never come back. Don't come back for me and take the gun next to Lee for protection if any vampires come for you." He says with a serious tone.

A tear slips out of Marilyn's eye. Pierce bites his bottom lip before releasing her. She starts to head for the door without looking at him. Pierce glances down at the vial in his hold. He rubs his thumb along the glass and watches Marilyn shut the door behind her.

Marilyn grabs the gun next to Lee's body and proceeds her way to the closest exit. Her mind is foggy and her thoughts are echoes. She can't comprehend anything and doesn't know what to do. When she reaches for the exit the door is locked. She spins around to find any other doors and the only one is where they keep the vampires locked in.

She would return to Pierce but he said to her to don't go back for him. She jogs into the large room that is empty. She goes into the other room where Pierce was left in the box. She looks through the glass wall where she first saw him. When she first laid eyes on him.

Marilyn turns around when she hears someone cock a gun. She sees Agent Doloman and two other soldiers appear out of the dark.

"And you're still here." Agent Doloman starts with his gun pointing at her. Marilyn raises hers so there's leverage. If he pulls the trigger she'll pull hers too. "Lee is dead."

"I was there with Sammis killed her."

"What?" He moves his gun away from having it pointing at her.

"Surprised? He got his death in return though."

"You killed him?" She shakes her head and drops the gun at her side.

"He deserved it. He did this whole thing. He had the cure all this time and released all the vampires." He wipes his hand across his face, smearing blood on his cheek.

"Where is the cure?"

"Gone." Marilyn lies although she has the ingredients in her back pocket.

"You know I brought you here when your whole family were killed by vampires." She laughs while spreading her arms into the air.

"I was never asked to be brought here. I was young, innocent and naive. Sorry I felt some emotion for a vampire in here. Having them locked up and you guys torturing them is the same sin. Nothing different." Agent Doloman stares at her expressionless.

"Where is Thirster 2467?" She shrugs.

"I don't know somewhere in the Area just like every other vampire waiting for the sun to go down." Marilyn lies again.

"So you felt pity for him and look... he left you in the dust." A smile curls on her lips.

"Not exactly."

"Oh yeah?" He questions and suddenly a force in Marilyn's body vanishes. She furrows her eyebrows and she feels like she can control her body now not like earlier when Pierce told her to leave.

"What the-" She mutters to herself but is cut off when the door opens with a bang.

"Marilyn!" Pierce shouts and starts racing to her. One of the soldiers besides Agent Doloman raises his gun and pulls the trigger. The bullet hits Pierce on the side and he loses balance from running. Marilyn drops her gun and goes after Pierce who collapses on the ground.

She slides on her knees and picks up his head. He starts to gasp in pain while holding his wound. Marilyn places his head softly on her lap and caresses his cheek. While shushing him she looks in his hurt eyes. They swell and become glassy, something she hasn't seen happen to him. She catches a tear with her thumb that escaped from the corner of his eye.

"Stop!" Marilyn raises her hand to Agent Doloman and the soldiers when they got closer to them. "Help him please!" She pushes Pierce's hair away from his eyes. "He's human." Their mouths drop in shock and Agent Doloman bends down.

"How do you even know?"

"He's crying. Vampires don't cry. He's going to die if we don't help him." Marilyn didn't think he'd take the cure but he did. No wonder she felt that force vanish in her because his persuasion stopped working after he became human. Agent Doloman sees the blood seeping out of the bullet wound and tells his soldiers to pick him up. Marilyn crosses his arms over his chest and the soldiers pick him up.

Pierce cries in pain and looks at her in agony. She holds his wound while they marched out of the room. Agent Doloman resets the code for the doors to open. When it does they reach outside without vampires attacking them.

More soldiers come to the rescue and place Pierce on a stretcher. Marilyn sighs in relief knowing that everything is going to be okay. She kisses his forehead because he's having trouble talking to her.

For the first time in a long time Pierce felt the warm sun soaking on his skin.

He squints from the brightness, his eyes still adjusting to the light. He lies on the stretcher while they strap him down and bring him on a helicopter. They inform Marilyn that they're going to bring him to the closest hospital and fix his wound. Others asked how he became human.

She pushes her way through the crowd and hops on the helicopter before it flew away. Paramedics that lived in the Area were on the helicopter helping Pierce's wound.

The whole way there Pierce and Marilyn held hands. Pierce felt freedom and victory at the same time, blessed that he had the opportunity to become human again.
