Chapter-6

Demon in Ruins (Dark Choices #1)✔

-Previously in DiR-

"You. Your name is Nathaniel." I said. "It is a big name."

"In our time, we never took half names, Lady Karen."

"Don't call me Lady Karen. I'm not an old woman in her fifties." I made a face. "I have to go home."

He stared at me with his green orbs and smiled.

"Isn't this your home?" He asked.

"No way," I shouted. "I'm a hostage here with a friend of mine."

"I am so sorry Karen." He said sadly. "But you cannot leave. Ever."

I fell back on the bed. Thoughts flooded my mind.

Let this be a nightmare. I prayed to god. I can't survive here. I need to go home. My parents will wait for me. It was my birthday. I'm their only child. I can't remain a hostage here forever.

Chapter-6

I glared at him forgetting the fact he was the one having all the powers to kill me with a snap of neck or shoot laser beams from his eyes. Vampires don't shoot beams, duh!

It was more than four days since we had gotten here. I hadn't met Jon. I was scared if he was still alive or not. There were loads of vampires roaming around in the mansion with their fangs showing and shinning. They walked in the sunlight that came through windows of the mansion.

Not to mention, my phone and my camera were not working. Nate explained it was because of the different dimension effect. I did not understand it fully but I pretended to be a brainy in front of Nate who was trying so hard to make me get it.

Anyways I understood one thing and that was Victor and Nate had some bad blood between them and also that Lady Escoffier was planning to solve the history. She was desperate to get the brothers together.

I was standing with Nate and glaring at him as I stated already.

"Why are you looking at me like that, Karen?" He asked in his deep voice.

I didn't answer and kept glaring. I needed to go home.

"Are you missing home?" He asked.

"What, can you read my mind now?" I scowled at the poor vampire.

He smiled and shook his head sideways.

"It is not I can read your mind or something." He said. "I don't have that ability."

"How do you know then?"

"You have the look on your face which says you miss your world." He said.

World. My world. His world. His mother needed to realize the difference and send me back. By the situation I was in I knew Lady had no intentions of sending me back.

"This war of yours includes werewolves too?" I asked.

"There were werewolves who fought the war with us."

"Against you?"

"No. With us." He said. "They were in our team."

It was me who made him say words like 'team'.

"As far as I know werewolves are considered to be your enemies." I said raising my eyebrow. "How can they work with you?"

"We are not as we are depicted in the books, Karen." He sighed. "The world of supernatural is different from how you read in the books."

"Why?"

"Because they aren't written by us." He said. "They are written by your kind."

I wanted to know all of his past but he refused to tell me anything. He said past was painful and he was expecting a different future for himself. He was expecting the ghosts of past to never catch up.

What had happened in the Devries/Escoffier family was a mystery to me. What would have made Victor to hate Nate so much?

"Where is Jon?" I asked out of blue.

I missed Jon. He was the person who made me feel home in this monstrous place. Nate was nice to me most of the time but I couldn't trust a vampire with his lust for blood. Jon was my best friend and if we spent time in pair maybe we could find some way to get out of here.

"The boy with light brown hair who was transported with you?" Nate asked in disgust.

"Yeah," I said.

"The boy is weird." Nate stroked his chin. "He talks extra sweetly to all the woman in this mansion. I'm afraid he wouldn't survive very long."

My heart thumped and I let out a loud gasp. Was he going to kill Jon?

"Don't hurt him please." I pleaded.

Nate looked at me in surprise and his lips were in thin line.

"I'll not hurt him. He is your friend and he will be as safe as you are." He assured me.

"Then why did you say he won't survive long?" I asked.

"Victor is having some issues with him."

"Issues like?"

"I can't say exactly but he despises him greatly." He said.

"Victor is pretty gruesome, huh?" I said. "Is he even your brother?"

Nate's face went still and I realised he had stopped breathing. His eyes were darker shades of green now like he was recalling some past events from his life.

"You should go now." He growled.

"Go where?" I asked brightly. Maybe he was talking about home.

"To your room."

"But—" I started.

"NOW!" His voice in anger was scary.

It happened some days ago while talking to Nate. Now, he talked less to me. I saw him pass my room several times but he never stopped to say hello to me. He moved so swiftly and soundlessly I could never react in time. He was becoming a shadow to me.

I had nothing to do in the room I was in. Lady Escoffier had given me some novels and permission to see Jon. The novels weren't from medieval time. They were brand new. I knew from this that she travelled to other dimension a lot. Maybe Victor did too.

My heart ached to go home. I decided to make a plan to get out of this place.

There were many windows I could simply jump and run. As I estimated my room was on the second floor but the dining room where I had dinner was on first floor. I could escape from there.

I had to inform Jon and make him agree to my plan.

I walked in the hallway, searching for my best friend. There he was standing alone and looking out of the large window. He looked sad.

"Jon." I called.

His eyes lit up as he saw me and a smile came on his handsome face. He hugged me close and he smelled of lemons.

"Karen, I missed you." He breathed.

"I missed you too. Do you know what have we got ourselves into?" I asked him.

He nodded.

"They are vampires." I said. "And we need to get out of here."

"I don't want them to tear me apart." He said.

"Oh c'mon we can't spend our lives in here. I'm sure Victor is planning hideous revenge on Nate for something Nate is not interested in elaborating to me." I said. "I've a plan to escape this mansion."

"You don't." Jon made a face.

I slapped him lightly on arm.

"I do." I grinned widely.

***

It was after dinner when Jon and I made our way to the window to escape. Jon had been out once and according to him ten guards would be waiting for us in the entrance. We couldn't fight them if they were all vampires but the good news was they were not and Jon I had defence classes in our school. Jon said they were robot like humans who were on the guard.

"Where are you going, boy?" A guard asked as we walked out of the mansion.

"Wherever I want to, dead man." Jon said.

Jon shouldn't have said that. The guard came in light and his eyes were focused on us.

"Humans," He spat and drew out a wooden stick instead of some sword.

Jon punched him on his stomach and that made him flinch and step back and drop his stick. The guard charged towards him. Jon kicked him on his right leg and he fell down. The guard grabbed his ankle and pulled him to the floor beneath him.

"Dude, hit him."

I kicked the guard with all my force. I picked up the stick and started hitting him on head with it. The stick did miracles. He was unconscious in few seconds.

"I've a strong feeling this stick is magical." I said.

It wasn't my fault Nate had told me stories of faeries.

"Keep it with you." Jon said breathing heavily. "We'll need it."

We dropped down numerous guards. We ran like killer dogs were chasing us. There was no one chasing us. I was happy the guards were humans.

"STOP."

When I heard the shouting I thought it was Nate who was behind us. We would kill us.

It wasn't Nate who had shouted. It was some guard who was running towards us. His eyes were wide and he glared at us.

"Lady Karen, you cannot get here without Majesty's orders." He said.

"He is gone." I said after hitting on the head of a guard, watching him fell on the ground.

"You love violence." Jon said and we ran in darkness.

-Nathaniel-

"I cannot take this responsibility." I said to mother.

"I told you he would always be a coward." Victor grinned.

"Nathan, this is what your father wanted." Mother said. "This is what we all want."

"Not all of us." Victor said.

"You remain silent, Victor." Mother demanded.

Victor eyed me angrily and walked away.

"She requests me to send her back. How can I deny her requests when her blood brought me back?" I asked mother.

"I told you why we cannot send her back, Nathan."

Mother was calling me Nathan. It sounded so strange. She never called me Nathan before I was sent into the sleep after the war.

"She is different, mother."

"She is different that's why we have to keep her here." She said. "She is a source of power to your veins."

"I cannot feed on her forever."

"How many days are gone after you fed on her or anyone?"

It had been five days after I had woken up. I did not feel hungry as I should have. Blood was essential for us to use our powers and it could lessen our health. How was it possible for me to survive for so many days without feeding?

"Five days and you're standing here, Nathan." Mother exclaimed. "It is the power in her blood I am talking about."

"How is this—"

"Majesty,"

I was interrupted by a guard coming in the room.

"How dare you to interrupt us?" I asked.

He shivered in response and mother allowed him to talk. I knew mother could hear his thoughts but he spoke nevertheless.

"Two humans have escaped."

"What?"

"Karen has escaped with her friend." Mother said.

I had trusted her. All the trust crushed.

I would never forget her for this.

"I'm going for the search." I said.
