Chapter 60
When the Boss’ Lady Became His Sister-in-law
Chapter 60
James slowly opened his eyes with a deep look in his gaze. âWhatâs Rhett got to do, sticking hist nose into Vincentâs business?â
James hadnât pegged Rhett as the meddlesome elder brother type.
Bill was kinda worried, the FitzGerald family and the Turner family in Silvergrove City were on Kristinâs case like white on rice. âMr. Bryce, the FitzGerald family and the Turner family are giving Ms. Turner the runaround. Do you want to tangle with this hot mess?â
James let out a derisive chuckle. âAs for the dame I choose to shield, what can the FitzGerald family and the Turner family do about it? Besides, Rhett is not the kind to poke his nose into othersâ business.â
âBut Mr. FitzGerald is still on the hunt for her,â Bill uttered, not sure how to handle it.
âLet him,â James said curtly before hanging up the phone.
Tossing his phone aside, James got up and walked to the living room door.
His hand froze midâair, and he rubbed his temples before entering his bedroom.
Just let Kristin have a good rest.
Bright and early the next day, Kristin got up at the crack of dawn. She was new on the job and had morning shifts all week. She needed to get going early for the handover.
Rifling through the fridge, Kristin noted that Jamesâ place really lacked any homey vibes. Aside from a few eggs, you couldnât scrounge up any other ingredients.
Clear as day, James didnât bother with a housekeeper and never ate at home.
Dashing out of the complex, Kristin, card in hand, picked out groceries with serious intent at the supermarket right outside these fancy neighborhoods. The prices were through the roof. A single cabbage cost a whopping ten bucks.
Head hanging as she went to pay, Kristin consoled herself. After all, it wasnât her money she was spending.
After getting the groceries, Kristin whipped up breakfast and set it on the dining table.
The doorbell rang.
James, roused from sleep, walked out a bit cranky, clad in his robe, leaning against the door frame all lazy and devilâmayâcare. âWhoâs there?â
Seeing the breakfast Kristin had made, there was a split second of surprise in Jamesâ eyes. It occurred to him that the esteemed Ms. Turner had actually prepared breakfast, and it actually looked pretty decent.
James, who never ate breakfast at home, suddenly felt his appetite kick in.
11:40
At the door, Kristin opened the door and looked up, freezing on the spot.
Shock plastered on her face, and her throat seemed to clog up.
What was Rhett doing in Crescendo Town?
Rhettâs mood was foul, his expression tired as if he hadnât slept all night.
Kristin panicked, instinctively turning to run.
She feared Rhett was in cahoots with the FitzGerald family, coming to snatch her away.
âRunning for what!â Rhett furrowed his brow as he grabbed Kristinâs wrist.
Kristin turned as pale as a ghost, trembling all over. She couldnât go back or be dragged back to Silvergrove City.
Sheâd be done for.
âMr. FitzGerald, bright and early⦠you sure know how to surprise me.â James leaned against the dining table, a halfâsmile on his face. âYou came all the way to my place?â
Rhett was stern. âIâm taking her with me.â
âMr. FitzGerald, coming over to my place in the morning to take my woman? Thatâs not cool, is it?â James walked over and pulled Kristin into his embrace.
Kristin kept shaking, inexplicably unable to meet Rhettâs gaze. She feared seeing disappointment in his eyes.
In the end⦠she had chosen this path.
-Is Kristin kept as a mistress? Or⦠is she selling her body and soul?
But she had no other choice, because James was Summerâs father.
Rhettâs look at Kristin was indeed full of disappointment. He hadnât expected her to choose this
path.
âIâve sorted out Summerâs schooling, and Iâll handle the FitzGerald family and Turner, family for you. Think it over,â Rhett said. He wasnât a fool. If James brought a woman home, it meant something.
James frowned. Was Rhett helping Kristin?
But to James, Rhett was coldblooded without feelings, not easily moved by anyone.
Kristin said nothing, almost burying her head in his chest.
âMr. FitzGerald hasnât had breakfast, right? Kris made it, care for a taste?â James asked, hugging Kristin tight.
Kristin stiffened her body, her eyes reddening.
Rhett glanced at the dining table, and even from afar, he could smell the aroma.
11:40
Strangely, he wanted to taste Kristinâs cooking.
James smirked with a deep meaning, suddenly feeling a sense of crisis.
If it were Vincent⦠he wouldnât give a damn. But as for Rhett, that was a different story.
âNo thanks.â Rhett said gravely, giving Kristin a look as if offering her one last chance,
Kristin kept her head down, silent the whole time.
âTake care, Iâll host dinner tonight. My assistant will get in touch in advance,â James said as he watched Rhett leave.
Rhettâs expression was hard to read, his eyes somewhat complex. Heâd actually felt an impulse to fight James for herâ¦.
He wanted to know what deal James had made with Kristin and he could offer double.
But when the words reached his lips, reason ultimately prevalled.
Why bother over a woman who had fallen so lowâ¦
Rubbing his temples, Rhett spoke in a deep voice. âLook into the relationship between James and Kristin.â
James definitely wouldnât just take someone home at a glance. This was Jamesâ home, and the fact that he didnât bring women home was common knowledge in their circles.
York stared at Rhett in shock. âDoes Kristin⦠have a relationship with Mr. Bryce?â
Chances were that Kristin had taken a hike to Crescendo Town for her new lover. âKristin is a smart cookie. She knows youâre a tough nut to crack that doesnât fall for charms, so she made a beeline for Crescendo Town. James is⦠the only other guy besides you who could keep her safe. With her in Crestendo Town, Vincent and the Turner family canât touch her.â
Rhett glowered at York. âYou can zip it now.â
In the living room.
After Rhett left, Kristin stood silently, refusing to look up.
âI underestimated you⦠youâve got some game. Vincentâs your fiancé, and youâre even reeling
in his brother?â James reached out and tilted Kristinâs chin up.
He was feeling a bit sour, so his words came out a bit harsh.
But the moment he lifted Kristinâs chin, James regretted it.
Because Kristin was crying. Tears streaked her face, and her eyes were redârimmed.
âWhat are you crying for?â James frowned.
Was she upset because Rhett misunderstood her, or because she thought Rhett was
11:40
disappointed in her?
âGot a thing for Rhett now?â James grew more irritable.
Kristin shook her head.
âBreakfast⦠got cold.â Kristin gestured towards the dining table, glanced at the clock, and then
turned to bolt.
âWhere do you think youâre going, sit down and eat.â James wanted her to have breakfast. before leaving.
âI have to work. Iâm going to be late.â Kristin said nervously.
âTake your phone. James pointed to the mobile on the table.
Kristin paused and then realized James had bought her a phone.
She picked up the phone, looked at it, then turned back to James. âThank youâ¦â
The fingers of Jamesâ hand holding the fork slowly tightened.
After Kristin dashed out the door, James irritably tossed the fork away.
What on earth was he doing?
At the Nightlight Club.
Work wasnât busy during the day, mainly taking care of guests and checking out of private rooms or hotel rooms upstairs.
Yara also arrived, grinning at Kristin. âKris, got some new threads?â
Kristin paused and glanced down at her dress, a gift from James.
âThat outfit isnât cheap, huh?â Yara continued.
Kristin nodded slightly.
âKristin.â Harriet burst in, all hustle and bustle, and dragged Kristin off to the restroom. âWhatâs the deal with you and Rhett? Heâs a bigâtime CEO! The richest of the rich! He dragged me around Crescendo Town looking for you all night. Iâm worried sick you were in trouble⦠It seems like he really cares about you.â
