Chapter 161
When the Boss’ Lady Became His Sister-in-law
Chapter 161
Kristinâs eyes were wide with shock as she stared at Rhett.
Was he really going all out today?
He even notified the police and the press.
Taking a deep breath, Kristin clutched Rhettâs collar tightly.
Burning bridges with Holcomb did him no favors given his current predicament.
Rhett smiled, taking Kristinâs hand in his. âI promised you a show, didnât I?â
He was far from done with this matter.
âYouâve lost your mind. Youâre insane!â Holcomb began to quiver with fear.
Vincent stood frozen, watching the exchange between Rhett and Kristin, feeling as though a knife had been plunged into his heart.
âYouâre bewitched, seduced by this temptress!â Holcomb, seething with anger, picked up a vase from the table and hurled it at Kristin and Rhett.
Rhett frowned, instinctively pulling Summer into his arms and stepping in front of Kristin to shield her from the flying shards.
âNicola, youâre suspected of incitement to commit grievous harm. Please come with us for an investigation.â
Holcomb was at a loss for words.
âItâs all a misunderstanding, just a family affair. Weâll settle it ourselves,â Nicola said in a panic, looking nervously at Holcomb.
It was a critical time for the selection of the companyâs vice president. Even though she knew Holcomb would find a way to get her out, she couldnât stand it.
If anything went wrong, the consequence was beyond imagination.
Glaring at Rhett, Nicola snapped, âRhett, for a woman, youâre even turning your back on your father.â
âYouâre so cruel.â Summer whispered fearfully, clinging tightly to Rhett. âDaddy, I will protect you from now on.â
Rhett felt a lump in his throat, his eyes beginning to burn.
He smiled, patting Summerâs head gently. âItâs okay, sweetheart.â
âMr. FitzGerald, we heard that Mrs. FitzGerald poisoned you. Is that true?â
âMr. FitzGerald, was the housekeeper from Harborside Haven who poisoned you acting under Mrs. FitzGeraldâs orders?â

âYour current wife has harmed your exâwifeâs son. What do you think?â
Outside the iron gates, reporters swarmed.
The butler, along with the servants, hurriedly shut the gates, struggling to keep the reporters at bay.
âMr. FitzGerald, please come out and make a statement.â
The reporters outside were causing chaos.
The police gestured for Nicola to follow them.
âThereâs been a misunderstanding. I canât just go out in front of all these reporters,â Nicola refused. âWhatever it is, talk to my lawyer.â
âMs. Nicola, please do not obstruct our duties,â the police officer said with a frown.
âWhatâs your badge number!â Nicola screamed uncontrollably.
âStop obstructing the law! Youâre concerned about losing face in front of the reporters now, but youâve shown a flagrant disregard for the law and acted with malicious intent,â the officer said angrily, gesturing for Nicola to follow.
Holcomb, trembling with rage, pointed a shaking finger at Rhett, unable to utter a word.
âDonât touch my mom.â Vincent, furious, tried to protect Nicola.
âIf you obstruct police business, youâre coming with us too,â the officer said sternly.
âVincent! Step aside.â Holcomb finally spoke, signaling the police to take Nicola away.
Nicola hadnât expected her assistant to betray her.
Grinding her teeth, she wasnât too worried about facing major consequences.
Gathering her thoughts, Nicola addressed Rhett in front of the reporters. âRhett, Iâm wronged,
but I will prove my innocence.*
âWhether youâre innocent or not, the court of public opinion will decide,â Rhett said, looking out at the reporters. Hopefully, this experience will teach you a lesson.â
The reporters were snapping photos and recording, witnessing the feud within high society.
It was a war without gunfire, an extraordinary spectacle.
Everyone knew that once this story hit the press, it would be the talk of the town for weeks, if
not months.
âGet out! All of you get out!â Holcomb continued to wreak havoc in the living room.
Rhett curled his Cps into a halfâsmile, placing Summer in Kristinâs arms and draping his jacket over Kristinâs head to shield her and Summer. âEnjoy the show? Ready to head home for

dinner?â
Kristinâs eyes were red as she looked up at Rhett. âWhat would you like to eat?â
âAnything you cook,â Rhett replied softly.
Kristin looked down, her eyes moistening. âLetâs go.â
*Calebâ¦* called out as he chased after them, wanting to speak with Kristin.
Clearly he wasnât ready to give up.
At the sight of Rhettâs demeanor, he wasnât sure if he was just putting on an act.
He didnât know if Rhett was with Kristin or if he was just using her to rile up Vincent and Nicola.
Kristin didnât look back as she got into Rhettâs car.
York drove them away, with reporters chasing after the vehicle for quite a distance.
*Handle this. Keep the story hot,â Rhett commanded in a low voice.
Yorkâs palms were sweaty as he hesitated.
He was worried about Rhett.
Openly clashing with the FitzGerald family at this time was clearly not the best move.
It merely gave Nicola an opportunity.
If Holcomb decided to join forces with Nicola against Rhett, Rhettâs situation would become even more precarious.
Kristin understood this as well, aware that Rhettâs path ahead would be tougher.
But what she didnât understand was why Rhett who always played it safe wouldâ¦
Was it for her?
Impossible.
âMr. FitzGerald,â Kristin uttered softly.
âNicola and Holcomb will lie low in only half a month. Can you eliminate Neal as the trump card before Nicola rebounds?â Rhett asked, looking at Kristin.
Kristin took a deep breath. âYes, I can.â
Rhett raised an eyebrow. âGood. Very good.â
âKristin, donât bite off more than you can chew. Two weeks, how dare you?â York was worried about Kristin, concerned that she might not be able to deliver on her promises and end up getting hurt.
âI can do it,â Kristin replied earnestly. âThis time, with the fallout between Mr. FitzGerald and his family, Vincent is sure to stop playing his cards close to the chest. If Iâm not mistaken, heâll

be strutting back into the office tomorrow, ready to go headâtoâhead with Mr. FitzGerald in a fullâon power struggle? Without Nicola to back him up, give Vincent a little nudge and heâs bound to slip up.â
Kristin bit her lip, then spoke again. âItâs the same deal with Neal.â
âAre you sure you know Vincent that well?â York asked.
âIâve known Vincent since my teens. I know him inside out.â Kristin nodded.
Rhett scowled, kicking the driverâs seat. âJust focus on driving, will you?â
Yorkâs hands were sweating as he gripped the steering wheel.
This time, it was crucial to successfully undermine Neal.
Vincent was definitely going to cause a scene at the office tomorrow.
âKristin, kicking out Neal is critical.â Before getting out of the car, York repeated his warning. âNeal is a sly fox. Finding a fault and firing him is just fantasy.â
âIâll do my best.â Kristin kept reassuring herself that she could do it.
Rhett had her back, and she was determined to return the favor.
Even if it was tough, she would give it her all.
âYou can go now,â Rhett warned York, before taking Summer and heading home.
York felt helpless. Why was it always him getting the short end of the stick? He was scared too. Looking at what Rhett had been up to recently was driving himself into a corner.
York was now starting to wonder if Kristin had somehow cast a spell over Mr. FitzGeraldâ¦
