Chapter 344
King of the Underworld
Chapter Three Hundred Forty-Four Adrik âWe wonât let that happen, princess. I donât know what to do with her, but itâs clear she doesnât need to go back to Italy and she doesnât need to go to South America either. I think weâre going to have to tell her whatâs going on,â Ivan said, his voice had the soft tone that I only ever heard him use with her.
âWe may not like her, but thatâs f**ked up,â Stephen said. âSurely we can come up with an option to give her a fresh start on life. Away from her family. They give new meaning to dysfunctional.â
Viktorâs phone beeped. Sephie just held it out for someone to grab, without moving her face from my shoulder and neck. Viktor took it, looking at the message. âSheâs telling Martin. Theyâre all going to think Armando is dead by tonight,â he said, somewhat amused.
âI mean, is it a lie though?â Andrei asked. âHeâs not dead, yet.â
We waited for Martin to respond to her text, but there was nothing. I saw Andrelâs eyes glaze over, which meant he was getting more information than the rest of us. I waited for him to snap back to reality, my arms still holding Sephie tightly. She kept her face hidden against my neck and shoulder so they couldnât see her eyes as she worked to calm down. The guys noticed Andreiâs look, so they all turned to look at him expectantly. Ivan glanced back at me, a questioning look on his face with a slight nod toward Sephie, silently asking about her while everyone else was distracted. I mo uthed âtalk later to him, which satisfied his curiosity for the time being.
Andrei joined us in the present once again, surprised to see us all staring at him, waiting for news. âI still have to work on being subtle. Clearly,â he said.
âWhat do you know now that none of us know yet?â Viktor asked.
âThey know Trino is gone. Thatâs why heâs not responding to Gianaâs text yet. Theyâre searching for Trino. Sheâs not going to be happy that he ignores her. Sheâs liable to explode on him when he does finally respond,â he said.
Stephen looked at Misha, asking, âyouâre sure that Trino made it out safely though? Theyâre not going to find him? He had a good head start, but thereâs no telling who is working with Martin at this point.â
He was obviously worried about Trino being on his own.
Misha nodded his head. âHe took one of his vehicles when he left, but the vehicle at his parentsâ house was not the same one. Heâs changing vehicles along the way to lose them. Trino is smart. Heâll make it.â
Viktorâs phone beeped again. âSheâs worried now that heâs not answering. She wants to know when he can come to Italy to get her, so she knows when to tell us to send her there.â
I felt Sephie sigh as she thought about the possibilities of Giana going back to Italy. âThese people are f**king evil,â she said quietly.
âHow long until Trino makes it to his parentsâ house?â Ivan asked.
I pulled my phone from my pocket, showing him the location that Trino sent me. He studied it for a few minutes, calculating the time it would take to make it there, best case. âWe still have a couple hours to wait,â he finally said.
Andrei walked to the kitchen, saying, âIâll make the coffee.â
Sephie sighed, but finally looked up at me, silently asking if it was okay to look at everyone else. I smiled sweetly at her, still lost in her once again normal eyes. Even normal, her eyes were still gorgeous and unique. She smiled at me, then turned toward the guys. âI need something to do. Iâll make the cookies,â she said, following Andrei to the kitchen. We all followed her toward the kitchen.
Misha was clearly excited about this development in his life. He was practically bouncing as he walked next to her. âI love you so much right now, gazelle,â he said, throwing his arm around her shoulders.
Before she got started on her latest kitchen project, I walked up behind her, my arms around her waist.
She leaned back against me as she pulled bowls from one of the cabinets. âHow long are you going to be occupied, love?â I asked, kissing her neck gently.
âAbout an hour. Do you need to go downstairs?â she asked, curious.
âNo, but I need to make a few calls and I need to discuss what Ivan saw earlier with him,â I said quietly.
She immediately understood. âGo. Iâll keep everyone distracted,â she said, hugging my arms before I stepped away.
I caught Ivanâs eye, motioning for him to follow me to one of the spare rooms. The other four glanced at us, but said nothing as Sephie was starting a conversation with them to get everyoneâs mind off of the drama at hand.
As we walked into the room, Ivan shu t the door behind him. âI need to call Panama and we should discuss what you saw earlier. I have a feeling youâre starting to feel more of her emotions, so itâs only a matter of time before you find out,â I said.
He nodded his head. âIt started a day or two ago when she finally let herself feel the fear sheâs been ignoring. F**k me, I donât know how she stays so calm when it happens. She jokes about being out of control emotionally, but if I felt things as strongly as she does, Iâd need to be admitted to an asylum.â
âYouâre not wrong there,â I said. âSheâs the opposite of out of control.â
âIâm guessing her eyes turn almost wh ite when sheâs scared?â Ivan asked.
âThey do. Thatâs not all they do now, either, but itâs definitely the most obvious. Itâs actually scarier than her demon eyes, if Iâm being honest. We havenât told anyone because of me. I first saw it happen the first time we had s*x again after sheâs been hurt for so long. Iâve missed her so much this time that I was enjoying having a piece of her all to myself,â I said.
âNobody faults you for that. Itâs necessary. Youâve also been very generous in allowing all of us ample time with her while she was healing so that we could deal with what happened better than after the ball.
They all noticed and theyâre all very appreciative,â Ivan said.
âI understand you guys need her too. But I felt myself getting slightly jealous, so I wanted to keep this between us for now. Iâm starting to think it wonât be much longer though and one of them is going to see it, much like you did tonight. Sheâs trying hard to control it, but she doesnât always know when itâs happening. She can make them go dark at will and sheâs starting to be able to control a few other colors, but the whi te thatâs brought on by her fear is almost out of control for her. It feels like she doesnât know what to do with the fear when she feels it. She almost had a complete meltdown the first time it happened. All because she was terrified to be apart from me,â I said. âShe started shaking as bad as she ever has and she casually mentioned that she tends to get hurt very badly when she and I are apart. It almost knocked the wind out of me it hit me so hard.â
Ivan looked at me, his eyes going wider the more he thought about it. âSheâs absolutely right. I never put that together. I know why you separated yourself from her, both times, but both times ended very badly for her. Thatâs justified terror.â
âI agree. And Iâm never going to be apart from her again because of it. In fact, Iâve decided to give her the ring before this whole mess is taken care of She knows I love her, but she needs to know that sheâs stuck with me,â I said, smiling at the thought.
âSomehow I donât think sheâll mind,â he said. âWhat other colors are her eyes turning, if you donât mind me asking? You can tell me to su ck it, for the record.â
I inhaled. âI donât mind you knowing. I wouldâve put money on you being the first one to see it anyway, because of your special relationship with her. So far, they turn black when sheâs angry, almost wh ite when sheâs afraid, completely green when sheâs being sarcastic, and they turn deep blue when she thinks about me and how much she loves me. She calls them her mood ring eyes now. She also said she might need to get contacts. Sheâs worried about scaring all my business associates away if she canât get control of it,â I said, laughing.
âShe makes a solid point,â Ivan said, laughing with me. âI wonât tell the others about it until you do and Iâll try to keep an eye on her when youâre not around to make sure theyâre not changing without her knowing it.â
âSometimes she knows when it happens, but she said she feels like theyâre going rogue. The more times it happens, the more control sheâs getting over it, but you know how she is. Sometimes sheâs unexpectedly hit with very strong feelings. After what happened with Trinoâs guys, I feel the need to protect her from everyone else. You guys Iâm not worried about. Iâm just being selfish for now.â
âBe selfish as long as you want. No one is going to argue,â he said.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket, searching through the saved numbers trying to find one specific number. âI need to call Panama,â I said as I scrolled through the list of contacts.
âWhat old friends do you have in Panama?â Ivan asked.
âMy father.
