Chapter 178
Regressor of the Fallen Family
As Ronianâs words reached their parents, their reactions differed sharply.
âA high-ranking knight is more than capable of taking care of himself anywhere. Iâm in favor of it,â said the father, smiling with pride.
âWhy?! Why would you voluntarily seek danger? Why?!â exclaimed the stepmother, her expression changing drastically.
Logan understood some of her concerns but, having promised his brother, he had no choice but to try and convince her.
âRonian has reached the age to learn about the world, Mother.â
âNo! Thatâs nonsense! Do you know how much Iâve cried every time you went off to war? Just when things have gotten peaceful, you want me to worry again?!â
âBut you told me to be strong, didnât youâ¦?â
âHow can you compare you and the child?!â
ââ¦..â
The patriarch, who had once come back gravely wounded during the civil war, sank down with a hurt expression, while Merianâs face remained unmoved.
âRegardless, itâs a definite no!â
âMotherâ¦..â
Was Merian turning a blind eye to Ronianâs earnest appeal out of fear of being persuaded?
She got up from her seat without another look at her son.
âThatâs it! Iâm absolutely opposed. Thereâs no need for further discussion!â
Her refusal to even listen was evident.
Ronian, unable to bring up any more arguments, could only look to Logan.
âBig brother. I canât persuade mother. Please!â
A silent plea conveyed through his eyes, and with a sigh, Logan spoke up to the retreating stepmother.
âMother, Ronian will soon be an adult. We canât keep treating him like a child forever. Please reconsider, for Ronianâs future.â
âIndeed, you spoke well. Heâs almost an adult but not yet! Are we really sending someone like that out into the world all by himself?â
He wasnât exactly going to be by himself, Logan thought about addingâ¦
But that wasnât the point.
âMother. As you said, Ronian is young, but he is also a hero of reversals who has faced war numerous times. He is perfectly qualified to choose his path.â
Classic lines for persuasion, but they fell on deaf ears with Merian, who was blinded by worry for her son.
âIs this your doing? You told him to go out into the world and suffer?â
Loganâs sigh deepened at the dangerous glint in her eye, reminiscent of times she had opposed his stepmother.
âI was against it at first.â
âBut why have you changed your mind?â
âI was persuaded by Ronianâs own wish.â
âWhat?â
âHe wishes to gain experience in the world and surpass me. So, I told him to go ahead.â
Loganâs concise explanation was not enough to convince.
âRonian has exceptional talent. Mother, do you wish for him to remain simply the second son of the Maclain family? He has the potential to become the kingdomâs greatest knight. Itâs right for us to allow him to pursue his own path for his future.â
Logan spoke calmly about the future.
A sonâs safety, and his success.
Merianâs eyes wavered slightly, but a motherâs heart leaned once again towards safety.
âItâs still far too dangerousâ¦â
âIf Ronian, a high-ranking knight, ever faces life-threatening danger, the world would essentially be hell. You know thatâs excessive worry.â
ââ¦..â
Ronian might indeed seek out dangerous places for his training,
but Logan left out such details for the sake of persuasion.
However.
âIf something happens to Ronian, that would be hell for me! Whatâs wrong with him being my child? Heâs not even an adult yet! Itâs not like the knightâs errand needs to be done right this moment. Just a bit longer, just a bit moreâ¦.â
Merian remained resistant.
Ronian, observing his stepmotherâs expression silently, finally stepped forward.
âMother. I know you worry because you think Iâm lacking.â
âNot at all. You are my strong sonâ¦â
âIf it were my brother saying heâd go, would you oppose it this much?â
âThatâs not what I mean. I justâ¦â
âMother. I promise Iâll return safely. Iâll grow stronger, become tougher than my brother, and return as your brave son. Please trust me.â
âRonianâ¦.â
Ronian, gripping his motherâs hands, had eyes unshaken from before, and her wavering gaze finally steadied.
In that moment, Logan sensed that his mother had been won over by his brotherâs plea.
âThat sly boy, acting as if he canât when he can.â
And as expected.
ââ¦.How did such a young one grow up so much.â
Merianâs voice carried a sentiment similar to Loganâs just a few hours earlier, along with a resigned sigh.
As she tenderly touched her sonâs hair, her eyes welling up with tears, she realized that her son had grown taller than her.
The family, including the person at the center of it all, waited in silence for a moment, then a composed Merian spoke again.
âDo you truly need to do this?â
âYes. I am certain it is my path.ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âYou wonât engage in risky endeavors, right?â
ââ¦.Yes. Of course.â
Ronian stuttered, taken off guard, but reassured by his brotherâs signals.
A little white lie to calm his mother was not so bad after all.
With that, Merian finally nodded.
âAlright. Return safely. And donât forget to stay in touch periodically.â
âYes, Mother.â
âOh my. When did my son become soâ¦â
A warm embrace followed between mother and son.
With that, Ronianâs solo mission was set in stone.
* * *
âAre you sure itâs alright to leave so unprepared?â
Loganâs gaze swept over the barren surroundings.
The familyâs second son set off on a journey of indeterminate length, and only he and the parents remained to see him off.
Feeling somewhat uneasy about it, but recalling that the person himself had declined a grand farewell, there was ease in the adventurerâs tone.
âWhy make a fuss? Itâs nothing more than a brief outing.â
His younger brother treated a journey that could take years as a mere errand.
Logan had felt a peace of mind, even compared to when the matter was first broached.
âThen. Return immediately if it gets too hard or you feel you have met your goals.â
âI certainly will return after achieving my goals.â
He hugged his brother, who smiled in response, preparing to see him off. Loganâs heightened senses then picked up sniffling from behind.
âMotherâ¦â
Confident in his brotherâs abilities, yet knowing the importance of experience to avoid the pitfalls that lay ahead, he felt the need to share advice one last time.
âSo. Even though weâve talked about it before, what is the most important thing to keep in mind when traveling alone as a mercenary or a free knight?â
âDonât trust people carelessly.â
âThatâs right. Why?â
âPeople will mask their intentions and approach those who display talent or wealth, as they seek to take advantage.â
Logan nodded, pleased with the response.
âThatâs correct. A blade wielded in front can be countered with skill, but a stealthy stab in the back can inflict a deadly wound unnoticed. Always beware of people.â
âYes, brother.â
âAndâ¦â
ââ¦?â
âEspecially be cautious around women. With your skills and looks, there will be women who become entangled with you, and in those momentsâ¦â
âBrother.â
âHm?â
âYouâve mentioned it several times already.â
âAh, right. But listen again. At those timesâ¦â
Ronian chuckled at his brotherâs persistence, while Logan remained earnest.
âThis is advice that will save your life, buddy.â
He intended to share decades of experience from a past life with his brother for his own good.
Yet as time passed, Ronianâs expression became increasingly impassive.
âBrother, maybe thatâs enoughâ¦â
âEh? No, Iâm in the middle of the most important part. If you find yourself pinned down in the vanguard, thenâ¦â
âBrother! Youâve already said that three timesâ¦â
âEh?â
Realizing his brother looked exasperated, Logan noticed the sunâs position had changed as well.
Moreoverâ¦
ââ¦or else Iâll leave tomorrow.â
âIâm fine not leaving.â
âAh, come on. Regardlessâ¦â
âIt was just a saying.â
The voices of their parents reached Logan, forcing him to feel bashful.
âAlright. Have a safe trip. Donât forget the regular check-ins and reports. If youâre late, Iâll come looking for you.â
âUnderstood. Iâll keep that in mind!â
Ronianâs suddenly brightened face seemed almost like a freed prisonerâs, though it must have been Loganâs imagination.
âFarewell!â
âStay in touch!â
With his parentsâ farewells, Ronian turned and stepped forward, and Logan felt a shifted future.
âIâm crying again. Heh, but Iâm here. When Ronian looks back, heâll see us. How can he leave worrying like that? People⦠really.â
Patrick chuckled lightly as he comforted his sobbing wife in his arms.
âSniff. Be quiet. Sigh. Iâd be happier if he didnât leave, you know.â
âWe should let grown children live as they wish. Itâs time for them to worry about us now.â
âBut I canât help worrying.â
âWasnât all your worrying saved for when I went off to war?â
âWhat are you saying? It wasnât like that.â
Merian looked baffled at Patrick.
âWhy did you just worry about Ronianâ¦?â
âI said what I said. Of course, I worried. About you, about Logan.â
âAh⦠Haha. I knew it, right?â
âWhatâs this? You got jealous over your son?â
âThatâs not⦠jealousyâ¦.â
Patrick smiled sheepishly.
âDonât worry. I wonât worry anymore.â
Merian, with tears dried up, seemed resolutely determined.
âEh? And whyâs that?â
âInstead of worrying, Iâll prepare. So that Ronian can always come back to a comfortable place.â
ââ¦Well, if thatâs it, then by all means.â
Patrick finally relaxed, responding with a bright smile.
âYou need to step back from the territorial affairs a bit and let Logan handle them.â
âHeâs doing fine, whatâs the problem? As you say, letâs just prepare for when the kids need a place to rest.â
âIâll handle the preparations. You work. Loganâs been losing sleep over the fort lately.â
âNot really, I still oversee the knightsâ¦â
With the back-and-forth, their voices filled Maclain Castle as the sunset waned.
âI have to prepare thoroughly to protect all of this.â
Smiling from afar, Logan affirmed his resolve again.
* * *
âMy brother, reallyâ¦â
With the setting sun as his backdrop, Ronian chuckled at the thought of his recent ordeal.
It felt like an interrogation standing up â how many hours of talk about mercenaries had that been?
He knew it was all out of concern for him, yet he still felt patronized.
âSo I must return stronger.â
As he reaffirmed this determination, to the west, where the Maclain plains ended, stood a man with blue hair, backlit by the falling sun.
Seeing the man standing as if waiting for a long time, his boots dusted with soil, Ronian grinned and called out.
âViktor! How long have you been waiting? I thought you were a statue!â
Approaching the figure, Viktor smiled wryly.
âYouâre complaining, but how long did you spend on that farewell? I thought I got the date wrong.â
They greeted each other naturally with jokes, fists bumping, shoulders clashing, and then a light hug.
âTake care.â
Though brief, the words were drenched in pure sincerity, allowing Ronian to return the smile wholeheartedly.
âWhen I come back, Iâll be strong enough to face you with just one hand. Stay on your toes.â
Ronianâs playful brag was met with Viktorâs chuckle.
âJust make sure to come back safely. Even if you havenât grown, Iâll take care of you.â
âWhat, mate?â
Laughter filled the air, and with the farewell of his only friend in the territory behind him, Ronian strode forth on an indefinite journey.
