Chapter 40
Learning to Love
âWhat do you mean?â Aman said, confused.
âTamanna, the woman youâ¦you know, came here.â Priya repeated.
âWhen?â Aman asked in disbelief.
âWhile you were in the shower just now.â Priya answered, as she started to rewrap Amanâs bandages.
âWhat the hell did she say?â Aman asked, irritated that Tamanna had the nerve to come back to his house.
âShe told me what you told me.  Youre infidelity wasnât as severe as I thought and that nightâ¦you thought about me.â Priya said, while she applied some medicine to Amanâs wounds.
âPriya,â Aman stopped Priya from tending to his wounds, getting her undivided attention. âWhy did you believe her and not me?â
Priya looked down, unsure how to answer without offending Aman.
âWell, she had nothing to gain. You did.â Priya started.
âMeaning?â Asked Aman.
âShe doesnât know me. I donât know her, but she still came all the way down here and she took your side. Â I thought you convinced her to come and see m-â
âNo I didnât!â Aman interrupted. Â âI donât talk to her at all anymore, Priya. Â You have to believe me.â
âShe said the same thing. You two donât talk anymore, and you had nothing to do with it. Â Aman, I thought you were just telling me what I wanted to hear, so Iâd forgive you. Â When Tamanna came and told me everything that you told me, I had no reason not to believe her.â Priya explained.
Aman was quiet. Â He looked saddened by what Priya had just told him.
âYou believed her over me.â He stated quietly.
âAman.â Priya said.
âSheâs a stranger. Iâm your husband.â Aman said, a little angrily.
âItâs because a stranger, Aman. Â Thatâs why I believed her. Â She couldâve come here and said horrible things about that night you two spent together. Â She couldâve told lies that would have made me forget the very notion of ever forgiving you, but she didnât.â Priya said.
âThat doesnât make her a good person, Priya. Sheâs a bitch who caused all these problems in the first place.â Aman replied.
âAman, youâre at fault too.â Priya said quietly.
âWhy are you taking her side?â Aman asked, still angry.
âIâm not! Iâm just trying to tell you why I believe her.â Priya replied.
âIâve been apologizing to you ever since I told, and you wouldnât forgive me. Â She comes by one time and talked to you for five minutes, and you suddenly decide you can forgive me.â Aman said, the volume of his voice rising. Â âThatâs bullshit!â
âAman, why are you so angry? Â Iâve forgiven you. Â Isnât that what you wanted?â Priya replied, surprised by Amanâs anger.
âItâs all I wanted, Priya, but this wasnât the way I wanted it to happen.â Aman said calmly.
âIâm sorry.â Priya said, feeling like sheâd done something wrong.
âDonât apologize. Â You didnât do anything. Â I just...I hate that she came here. I never wanted you two to meet.â Aman admitted.
âCan I finish this?â Priya asked, pointing to Amanâs half wrapped bandages.
âOf course.â Aman said, leaning forward and letting go of Priyaâs hands so she could continue bandaging his wounds.
âAre you still angry?â Priya asked once she finished.
âNo, I have nothing to be angry at you about.â Aman replied.
Priya started to get up, but Aman stopped her, grabbing her arm. Â He pulled her closer to him. Â She looked at him unsurely, wondering what he wanted from her.
âWe should celebrate. Â Youâve finally forgiven me. Â Let me take you out tonight.â Aman said.
Priya smiled. Â She increased the distance between them, pulling away from him slightly.
âAman, you can barely walk properly. Â We can celebrate once youâve recovered.â Priya said.
âYouâre no fun.â Aman pouted.
Priya stifled a laugh. Â Aman was being a child again, and he was so cute!
âI promise, as soon as youâre fully recovered, weâll celebrate in whatever way you want.â Priya said.
Aman perked up.
âAny way I want?â Aman asked, pulling Priya closer.
âAman! You have a dirty mind.â Priya said.
âI was thinking a fun night at an amusement park, Priya. I donât know what you were thinking.â Aman said, jokingly.
âSeriously?â Priya asked in disbelief, not understanding the joke.
âWhat? Are we children? Weâre not going to an amusement park.â Aman laughed.
âGood,â Priya said.
âPriya, are you afraid of roller coasters?â Aman asked.
âNo...maybeâ Priya said.
âWell, an amusement park isnât really my idea of a romantic date, but maybeâ¦â Aman said.
âNo! Iâm not going to an amusement park!â Priya exclaimed. Â Aman belted out a loud laugh. Â Priya blushed.
âDonât worry, Priya. Â Iâm just kidding. Â Iâll think of something more romantic with just as much adrenaline.â Aman winked. Â Priya blushed even more, knowing exactly what Aman was hinting at.
âAman,â Priya stood up, eager to leave.
âWait,â Aman stopped her.
âWhatâs the matter?â Priya asked.
âWill you just...stay with me? Itâs so boring being by myself.â Aman said.
âSure,â Priya said, taking a seat next to Aman once again.
Amanâs recovery went by more quickly than his doctor had believed it would. Â After about two weeks, Aman was told he would need to come back and see the doctor.
âPriya, stop worrying. Â I can almost walk normally now. Â Everything will be fine.â Aman tried to convince Priya on the way to the hospital.
âWhy do they want to see you again then? Â Something must be wrong.â Priya said, concerned.
âItâs a routine checkup to make sure my recovery is on track.â Aman explained.
âAman, Iâm worried.â Priya said.
Aman took Priyaâs hand. Â He smiled at her.
âPriya, you worry a lot.â He stated. Â âItâs because you love me too much.â He added with a laugh.
Priyaâs heart lurched. Â How did Aman find out that she loves him?
âAman, how did you--â Priya began.
âWeâre here.â Aman interrupted.
Priya didnât bother repeating her question. Â If Aman wasnât going to make a big deal out of it, she wouldnât either. Â Right now, all she wanted to focus on was what the doctor was going to say about Amanâs recovery.
âShit!â Aman cursed under his breath as the nurse examined his ankle.
âItâs gonna hurt a little, sweetheart.â The middle-aged nurse said as she bent Amanâs ankle forward.
Priya tried not to laugh. Â It wasnât nice to laugh at someoneâs pain, but Amanâs facial expressions were priceless. Â The discomfort he was feeling was written all over his face. Â Suddenly, Aman grabbed Priyaâs hand and pulled her towards the hospital bed.
âIt hurts so much.â He said, pouting while squeezing her hand.
âItâs not gonna hurt for long, honey. Donât you worry.â The nurse said, believing that Aman was in a lot more pain than he actually was. Â Soon, the nurse left to go get the doctor, so he could come and finish Amanâs checkup.
âAre you in a lot of pain?â Priya asked, worried.
âYeah it hurts like a bitch!â Aman exclaimed.
Priya gave Aman a disappointed look.
âSorry, Priya. Iâm just telling it like it is.â Aman apologized for his language.
âCan I do something?â Priya asked.
âThere is one thing you could do.â Aman said, sheepishly.
âWhat is it?â Priya replied.
âNothing would make my ankle feel better like a foot massage.â Aman said.
Priya looked at him unsurely. Â Giving Aman a foot massage wasnât exactly her idea of a desirable thing to do. Â She sighed and walked to the foot of the hospital bed. Â She began to reach for Amanâs feet.
âPriya, wait.â Aman said.
Priya stopped, looking back at Aman.
âI donât really want a foot massage from you. Â I respect you too much to make you do something like that...but I could use a kiss.â Aman said.
âAman, the doctor could walk in at any minute.â Priya said.
âSo? He wonât care.â Aman replied.
âI care.â Priya said.
Aman started to get up off the hospital bed.
âWhat are you doing?â Priya asked.
âGetting up. Â If you arenât going to come here and kiss me, Iâm just going to have to kiss you.â Aman said.
He grunted at the pain that shot through his ankle. Â Priya instantly felt bad. Â She stopped him and walked to the other end of the bed. Â She gently pulled Aman back onto the bed. Â Once he was laying down, she leaned down and kissed him softly.
âThere, that should make you feel better.â Priya said, stepping back.
âNo, it wasnât enough.â Aman pouted.
âAman, donât be childish.â Priya reprimanded.
âBut...I want to kiss you some more.â Aman continued.
Priya blushed. Â The doctor came in at that moment.
âWell Aman, howâs the recovery going?â He asked Aman.
âGreat! I feel a lot better in just a couple of weeks.â Aman admitted.
The doctor started checking Amanâs ankle. Â He had Aman walk across the room to check the progression of his mobility. Â He also checked his wounds.
âI have no doubt that youâll be walking normally by the end of the month. Â These wounds look pretty healed. I wouldnât worry about scarring too much. Â Your wife took such good care of you. Â Usually, men of your means hire an army of nurses, but I think even an army of nurses wouldnât have taken care of you as well as your wife did.â Â The doctor said, smiling.
âI know. Â Sheâs the best.â Aman said, looking at Priya.
âShe must really love you.â The doctor mused.
Priyaâs eyes widened in surprise. Â Did the entire world notice that Priya had fallen in love with Aman? Â Aman said nothing in response, but his eyes were still on Priya.
âSee, Priya. There was nothing to worry about. Â The doctor said everything is great.â Aman said to Priya after leaving the hospital. Â They were on their way back to Amanâs mansion.
âI know. Iâm glad. Â Sorry for worrying so much.â Priya replied.
âI like that your worry about me. Â It shows that you care.â Aman said, smiling.
The fact that she cared was an understatement. Â She loved him and would do anything for him. Â Priya felt elated that Aman was going to be alright, but she couldnât help but feel restless. Â Did Aman know about Priyaâs feelings toward him or did he merely say that she loved him as a joke? Â Did he take the doctorâs remarks seriously or not? If Aman did know that Priya loved him, why wasnât he saying anything about it?
âPriya,â Aman said, trying to get her attention.
âYes?â Priya answered.
âI was just saying we should plan our celebration at the end of the month. Â The doctor said I should be good as new by then. Â Itâs the perfect opportunity.â Aman said.
âWill you still want to celebrate so many weeks after the fact?â Priya asked doubtfully.
Aman frowned.
âDo you not want to celebrate with me?â He asked sadly.
âNo! Iâd love to, but is it really worth celebrating?â Priya asked.
âPriya, you were angry with me for so long. Â Our relationship was suffering. Â Hell, I was suffering. Â You finally forgive me, and donât think thatâs worth celebrating?â Aman said seriously.
He turned to Priya, waiting for a response. Â Priya looked down, not sure what to say. Â She didnât want to upset Aman, but she didnât understand why her forgiveness was so important to him. Â She wasnât particularly mean to him while she was angry with him, and they didnât even live in the same bedroom and could easily go about their lives with limited contact. Â Â She brushed it off, thinking that Aman was just the type of man who did not like being disliked by others.
âWeâll celebrate, Aman. Â Weâll do whatever you want.â Priya relented.
âWhatever I want?â Aman raised an eyebrow.
âYou know what I mean.â Priya said.
âPriya, can I kiss you?â Aman asked suddenly.
âAmanâ¦â Priya shook her head, glancing at the driver.
âI told you this was going to happen when we were in the hospital.â Aman replied.
âButâ¦â Priya protested.
âItâs okay. Â I can wait til weâre aloneâ Aman winked at her.
