Chapter 25
Learning to Love
âHiten, itâs not like that.â Aman said.
âOf course it is! Every wifeâs duty is to keep her man happy. If getting some action makes me happy, then wouldnât my wife have to comply?â Hiten asked in all seriousness.
âIâm not sure that she would have to.â Aman replied.
âYouâre one to talk. Iâm sure Bhabhi does everything you want, gives you anything you ask for.â Hiten said.
âActually, Priya and I donât have that kind of relationship.â Aman said. Â As soon as he said it, he knew he couldnât have sounded any dumber.
âAre you trying to tell me that The Aman Verma, who could and often would get a girl into bed just by walking in a room isnât gettinâ any from his own wife?â Hiten concluded.
âUmmâ¦well, yeah thatâs what Iâm saying.â Aman admitted.  He knew that if he could talk to anyone about how he was feeling, it was Hiten.
âAnd youâre still alive?â Hiten asked incredulously.
âHiten, sex isnât everything.â Aman said.
âYeah, Iâm pretty sure it is.â Hiten joked. Â âBut seriously, why havenât you?â
âSheâs shy and traditional. I donât want to freak her out. Â I donât think sheâs ready.â Aman said.
âBut youâre married.â Hiten countered.
âIt was an arranged marriage. Itâs not like we were madly in love with each other when we got married, remember?â Aman replied.
Hiten thought about the situation. Â It made sense to him. Â He couldnât understand why Aman was so nervous. Â Heâd never been nervous about a girl before.
âI kissed her last night,â Aman continued, âfor the first time.
âHoly shit! No way! You went this long without kissing her either.  Damn! That mustâve been hell.  Bhabhi is pretty.  She could pass for hot if sheâ¦â Hiten said.
âWatch it, Hiten.â Aman warned.
âOkay okay. Â Question. Â Why did you wait so long?â Hiten asked.
âShe wasnât into it. Â I wanted her to be comfortable around me.â Aman answered.
âWhat made last night so special?â Hiten asked.
âIt was New Years. Â Kiss your significant other at midnight, you know. Â Thatâs what I did.â Aman said.
âYou didnât ask her if it was okay though.â Hiten observed.
âWell, I had an excuse and even this morning, I had an excuse.â Aman said.
âDid she slap you?â Hiten suddenly got excited. Â The volume of his voice rose as if expecting some impending drama to unfold before him.
âNoâ¦â Aman said unsurely.
âThen donât you think itâs okay to kiss her without an excuse? Â Hell, she might like that you finally made a move.â Hiten concluded.
Aman thought about it. Â Priya seemed receptive. Â She didnât resist. Â She surely didnât slap him. Â What if she liked being kissed? Â Nothing would make Aman happier than being able to kiss Priya whenever he felt like it. Â Well...there might be a few things he could do with her than would make him happier, but he couldnât think about all that right now.
âMaybe you should talk to her about all of this.â Hiten continued.
âWeâve talked. Â She doesnât want to have my children.â Aman replied.
âIâm sure every twenty-two year old, newly married woman is just dying to have grubby, loud, poopy babies in her life.â Hiten replied sarcastically.
Aman tried not to laugh. Â Hitenâs terminology was less than sophisticated.
âDo you have any idea what you just said right now?â he asked, chuckling.
âIt doesnât matter what I said? I have a good point, and you know it.â Hiten replied.
âYeah I guess. Â Maybe mentioning children so early wasnât the brightest idea.â Aman admitted.
âI think you need to talk to her. Thatâs whatâs going to solve your problems.â Hiten concluded.
Aman couldnât believe it. Â Hiten actually had a significant point. Â All he needed to do was talk to Priya.
âNow letâs solve my problem.â Hiten interrupted Amanâs thoughts.
âWhat problem?â Aman asked.
âI need a woman. A hot, funny, beautiful woman to turn my world and my bedroom upside down.â Hiten said.
âAnd what role do I play in this?â Aman asked, confused.
âWe need to hit the clubs. YOU need to be an awesome wingman! Thatâs your role.â Hiten said, getting worked up.
âI canât hit the clubs. Â Priya would never forgive me.â Aman said.
âYou arenât flirting. I am. Come on, go with me! Iâll call Bhabhi right now and ask her if itâs okay.â Hiten said, pulling out his phone.
âNo! Stop it, Hiten. I donât need her permission to go anywhere.â Aman said, getting a little angry. Â âListen, Payal leaves in about 2 weeks. Â Letâs have a Boyâs Night out in the city. Â Weâll even invite Rajiv. Â I need to see how he acts in such a setting anyways. Sound good?â
âHe better not drink. And if he looks at another woman, I swear Iâllâ¦â Hiten started.
âRelax! They arenât married yet. Â He can do whatever he wants. Â We just need to see how bad he is. Â If heâs anything like us, then heâs definitely not marrying Payal.â Aman said, smiling.
âHell yeah! Boyâs Night!â Hiten agreed.
Aman dropped Hiten off at his house and went to work for the day. Â He knew that he would have to have a serious discussion with Priya sooner or later. Â Part of him dreaded it, but the other part of him knew it was necessary. Â He just hoped that he wouldnât end up upsetting her.
âDidi! Look at this!â Payal shoved a brochure in Priyaâs face.
âWhat is this?â Priya asked, taking the brochure.
âThe January term at NYU.â Payal replied.
âOkay, what does this have to do with you?â Priya asked.
âMaybe I could start earlier and not be as behind.â Payal said quietly.
âBut Payal...that means youâre leaving sooner?â Priya asked.
âItâs only two weeks earlier, Didi! Â I donât want to be an entire semester behind!â Payal exclaimed.
âPayal, youâre smart. Â Youâll catch up.â Priya said.
âPlease Didi.â Payal asked again.
âWeâll talk to Aman tonight and see what he thinks.â Priya said.
âDoes that mean a yes from you?â Payal asked, hopefully.
âYes, Payal. Â You can go.â Priya said.
âYesss!! Thank you, Didi.â Payal started jumping up and down.
âOkay okay Payal, calm downâ Priya tried to say.
âOh my god! I need to pack. Didi, help me. Please!â Payal said all of a sudden.
âOkay, letâs go.â Priya said.
Priya and Payal started packing away Payalâs things. Â Priya could hardly believe that Payal would be leaving her in only a few days. Â True that she would only be in the city, which was only a half hour drive away, but this was her little sister. Â And she was going off on her own.
âPriya!â Aman came back after a long day of work.
He walked to the kitchen and then the living room. Â She wasnât in either place. Â He went upstairs and into his bedroom. Â Priya and Payal were sitting on the sofa, waiting for him.
âPriya, there you are. I need to talk to you.â Aman said. Â He looked over at Payal, hoping that she would give them some privacy.
âActually, we need to talk to you.â Priya replied. Â She and Payal looked at each other nervously.
âWhatâs going on?â Aman said, a little worried.
âPayal wants to study at NYU sooner, starting in the January term.â Priya said.
âOkayâ¦â Aman prompted her to continue.
âWhat do you think? Should she?â Priya asked.
âYeah! Why not? Itâs a great idea to start earlier.â Aman said.
âReally?â Payal asked.
âYeah of course.â Aman agreed.
Priya and Payal both let out a breath of relief. Â Payal bid them both goodnight and left to go to bed.
âWhat did you need to talk to me about?â Priya asked.
âPayal is leaving when?â He asked, diverting from Priyaâs question.
âIn two days.â Priya answered.
âOkay, I was going to invite Rajiv to have drinks with Hiten and me after we all moved Payal into her dorm. Â I guess weâre going to have to move up our plans.â Aman explained.
âRajiv?â Priya questioned.
âPriya, if heâs going to marry Payal, then weâre going to have to see how wild he gets at parties.â Aman explained.
Priya rolled her eyes.
âIs that what you needed to talk to me about?â she asked.
âWell, no. Â I just donât want to upset you.â Aman admitted.
âWhy would I be upset?â Priya asked.
âPriya, Iâd like for us to consummate our marriage. Â Thereâs no pressure for children or any ulterior motive behind it. Â I think itâs time we move forward.â Aman said carefully.
âAman, weâve already talked about this.â Priya replied calmly.
âI know! I know we have. Â What I need to know is why youâre so unwilling.â Aman answered.
âWe arenât in love.â Priya stated.
âWhen I kissed you, did you like it?â Aman asked suddenly.
Priya looked at him, surprised by his bluntness.
âYou didnât resist. Â You didnât slap me.â Aman pointed out. Â âDoes that mean you liked it?â
âWell, I...think I did.â Priya admitted quietly. Â She knew she did.
âSo does that mean I can kiss you whenever I feel like it?â Aman asked, hopefully.
âYou mean to show Payal?â Priya asked, disappointed.
âNo. I mean whenever I feel like it. I really do enjoy kissing you.â Aman smirked.
Priya blushed. Â She nodded.
Aman looked at her for a few seconds, surprised that she actually agreed. He walked toward her and pulled her forward. Â He gently pressed his lips to hers and then pulled away a moment later, watching to see Priyaâs reaction. Â She only blushed and smiled.
âLetâs celebrate our nuptial night tonight.â Aman said, still leaning close.
âWe canât.â Priya said, stepping back.
âBecause we arenât in love, I know. Â Priya, why canât we just try? Â Isnât it your duty as my wife to satisfy me?â Aman countered.
Priya knew she was being a bad wife. Â She knew that this would be expected of her sooner or later. Â Maybe she could give into Amanâs desires just a little bit. Â She was ecstatic that he wanted to kiss without any reason or excuse, and she didnât want to ruin his mood tonight.
âPriya, you donât understand how difficult it is. Â Iâm dying here.â Aman looked at her pleadingly.
âOkay.â Priya said. Â She walked over to Amanâs bed and sat down, waiting for him to join her.
Aman watched her, unsure what she meant. Â Slowly, he turned off all of the lights, locked his door and joined her on his bed. Â He cupped her cheek with his hand and brought her lips closer to his. Â He kissed her passionately. Â Priya laid down on Amanâs bed as Aman hovered over her, their lips never leaving each other. Â Priya felt her heart rate quicken. Â Sheâd never been in such a position with a man before. Â She was beyond nervous. Â Amanâs knuckles brushed against her collarbone, moving the drape of her sari lower, exposing some skin.
Priyaâs eyes fluttered closed. Â Aman pulled away from her and quickly removed his shirt. Â He kissed her again. Â He licked her bottom lip and she gasped, giving him an opportunity to deepen the kiss. Â Priya abruptly pulled away.
âAman, Iâve neverâ¦â Priya began to say.
âI know.â Aman said, lightly kissing her again. Â âPriya, do you want to go any further?â
Priya looked down and shook her head.
Anger started to erupt inside Aman. Â He tried to stay calm.
âWhat can I do, Priya? What will make you more comfortable?â Aman asked.
âMore time.â Priya answered. Â That was the one answer Aman had been dreading the most. Â That was the one thing he couldnât give her. Â He needed her right now.
âPriya, please.â Aman started.
âI canât,â Priya looked away.
Aman pursued the argument no further. Â He simple laid down, turned his back to Priya and tried to fall asleep.
Two days passed. Â Aman had said little to Priya. It was obvious he was angry with her. Â She tried to placate him on many occasions, but he simply walked away. Â He only acted cordial with her when Payal was present. Â She never suspected anything was amiss between the couple. Â Finally, it was time for her to leave and move into NYU. Â Aman and Hiten had called Rajiv up and went down to the campus to get a head start moving Payal in. Â Priya and Payal joined them later with Payalâs personal belongings. Â Â Rajiv led them to Payalâs dorm. Â There were several movers moving large boxes and bulky items in and out of the room.
âJija-ji, what was the point in getting all the guys together if you were going to just hire movers to do all the heavy lifting?â Payal asked.
âBoys Night.â Hiten answered for Aman.
âWeâre already in the city. Why waste the gas?â Aman added.
Their plan made little sense to Payal, but she left it alone. Â Rajiv started to explain all the best college hangout near campus. Payal listened intently, grateful that she knew someone who was familiar with the city and the campus who can also guide her if necessary. Â Afterwards, the boys left to go to Rajivâs place, since he lived closest to the center of the city, while Priya and Payal were left to unpack all of Payalâs belongings.
âAre you sure youâre going to be alright?â Priya asked as they finished unpacking.
âIâm sure, Didi! Chill! Iâm only half an hour away, if even that.â Payal quipped.
âIf anyone gives you any trouble, tell me.â Priya said. Â â And if you donât like it here and want to come back home, just tell me. Â Promise?â
âPromise.â Payal answered.
The two sisters exchanged a sad but tearless goodbye. Â Aman had left Priya the limo and instructed the driver to drive her back to his mansion. Â Priya was sad that her sister had gone off to college and now sheâd be left by herself in the mansion. Â Maybe she could call Neha and they could have a Girlâs Night, while the guys were having their little Boyâs Night. Â Or maybe sheâd just spend the night watching films on the couch. Â She continued thinking about tonightâs plans as the limo approached Amanâs massive mansion. Â Priya ascended the stairs, still entrenched in deep thought. Â She walked into Amanâs room with the intention of changing into a more comfortable salwar kameez as opposed to the sari she had on now. Â She mindlessly opened the door to the closet. Â What she saw left her speechless. Â All of her clothes had been completely removed from the closet! Â Priya felt a twinge of panic. Â She rushed around the room, looking to see if the rest of her belongings were around. Â There was nothing. Â It was as if Aman was the sole occupant of this room.
Sooo much happened in this chapter!! Aman and Hiten conversations are so fun to write. Â Things got pretty hot and heavy between Aman and Priya, didnât they? I felt bad for Priya. Sheâs just not ready for that kind of intimacy. Â Payal left, and some drama between Aman and Priya (especially regarding Aman) is about to ensue!
