Chapter 24
Learning to Love
âWhere are you taking me?â Priya asked, surprised. Â She was taken away from the crowd and pulled toward the VIP lounge.
âCome here.â Aman said pulling her into the empty VIP lounge.
âWhat are we doing here?â Priya asked, amused.
Aman didnât answer her. Â He simply watched her, admiring her beauty. Â He took a deep breath and walked closer to her. Â He wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her close. Â Priyaâs eyes widened in surprise. Â She tried to move away from him, but his hold on her tightened. Â Â She instinctively looked down. Â Amanâs face inched closer to hers. Â He searched her eyes for any sign of resistance, but she refused to meet his gaze. Â He gently moved her chin up with his fingertips, forcing her to look at him. Â He moved closer until they were barely inches apart.
Aman kissed Priya.
Their lips met, and passion erupted between them. Â Priya felt an unfamiliar charge build up inside of her. Â Her senses fogged up and she couldnât think straight. Â Her hands rested on Amanâs chest. Â One of his hands cupped her cheek as the other arm stayed firmly around her waist. Â The kiss was gentle, but passionate. Â Suddenly, fireworks beamed over the New York City skyline, as if a celebration of Aman and Priyaâs union had commenced.
Aman gently pulled away, breaking the kiss. Â Priya was left breathless. Â Colorful lights from the fireworks flooded the room. Â Aman smiled at her.
âHappy New Year, Priya.â he whispered, pressing his lips to her cheek. Â Priya blushed.
âItâs so beautiful here.â Priya said, turning around to watch the fireworks.
Aman wrapped his arms around Priya, hugging her from behind. Â He rested his chin on her shoulder and proceeded to watch the fireworks with her in his arms.
âTo the New Year! Wishing everyone a prosperous year. Letâs hope this year brings more parties, more money, and more love!â Hiten raised a toast, welcoming the new year.
The crowd raised their glasses and cheered. Â Rajiv, who doesnât drink, and Payal raised their glasses of juice. Â After she and Aman rejoined the crowd, Priya quickly raised a glass of water Aman handed her, while he himself took a glass of vodka from the bar. Â Hiten raised another toast and wished then announced that the party will go on all night long.
âYouâre going to have a huge hangover tomorrow.â Aman commented as Hiten downed a shot of tequila.
âWhatever. Tonight is my night! Party on!â Hiten slurred carelessly.
âDidi! Whereâd you go? You missed the fireworks.â Payal came running up to Priya.
âI saw them. Â They were wonderful!â Priya answered. Â She eyed Aman as he talked with Hiten. Â âBy the way, donât think I didnât see what happened between you and Rajiv.â Priya said mischieviously
The color from Payalâs face drained instantly. Â A blush crept onto her cheeks.
âDidi, Iâ¦â she tried to say, âItâs how they celebrate the New Year here.â
âSave it, Payal.â Priya said seriously.
âBut Didi, it wonât happen again. I promise. Rajiv is sweet. Â I told him he could.â Payal was nearly in tears.
âPayal! I was just kidding.â Â Priya said quickly, hiding a smile.
Payal looked at her suspiciously.
âReally, Payal. I like Rajiv. Â Just donât let things go too far. Â You arenât married yet.â Priya warned.
âI almost had a heart attack!â Payal exclaimed. Â âDo you really like him?â
âYep. I do. You two are cute.â Priya admitted.
âI like him too.â Payal said quietly.
Priya laughed and Payal joined in.
The rest of the night passed in exuberance. Â Â Everyone was in a fantastic mood, and the party continued on for hours after midnight. Â When Aman decided to leave, the party was still going strong.
âHiten, I think weâre going to call it a night.â Aman told his best friend.
âWhat? No! The nightâs still young.â Hiten pouted.
âWe should go. Â Payal looks like sheâs about to pass out in exhaustion.â Â Aman mused.
âAre you sure you canât stay?â Hiten asked sadly.
âIâm sure, but this was one hell of a party, man!â Aman replied.
âYeah I know! Iâm so glad you ended up coming. It wouldâve been so boring without you.â Hiten said excitedly.
âReally?â Aman asked, unconvinced.
âNo! I wouldâve had fun either way, but they party was even better with my best friend here.â Hiten laughed.
Aman, Payal, and Priya said goodbye to Hiten and all their friends. Â Payal didnât have a chance to say bye to Rajiv. Â She was too afraid Priya would see them again, so she settled for a distant wave goodbye. Â Payal was asleep as soon as she settled into the limo. Â Aman looked a Priya. Â He was glad heâd finally kissed his wife. Â He enjoyed it, and he hoped Priya did too. Â She hadnât said anything about the kiss, but she reacted positively. Â Aman took that as a good sign.
âAre we there yet?â Payal said groggily, waking from her brief slumber.
âAlmost.â Priya answered.
âWake me up when we get there.â Payal said with a yawn.
Priya rolled her eyes as Payal settled her head onto Priyaâs lap. Â Twenty minutes later, they arrived at Amanâs mansion. Â Priya gently shook Payal awake as the limo came to a stop. Â All three of them were tired. Â Aman jumped in the shower, while Priya made sure Payal got to bed alright. Â She could barely keep her eyes open. Â Aman was still taking a shower when Priya went back to his room. Â She quickly changed into something more comfortable, and she took off her makeup. Â Only then did her thoughts go to the kiss she and Aman shared.
She wondered if people in America celebrated the new year with a kiss at midnight or if Aman really meant it. Â She smiled to herself as she thought about how great his lips felt on hers. Â After somewhat of an internal conflict, Priya decided that if Aman kissed her goodnight, then he meant the kiss and their relationship would move closer to that of a normal husband and wife. And if he doesnât, then maybe it was just the heat of the moment that possessed him to kiss her. Â Priya wasnât sure if she wanted Aman to kiss her again, she knew she wouldnât refuse him.
She sat at the edge of the bed, trying not to look as tired as she felt. Â Amanâs phone started ringing. Â Priya hesitated. Â She wasnât sure if it was appropriate to answer his phone. Â She picked it up and looked at the caller ID. Â Hiten was calling. Â Priya answered it.
âHello?â Priya said unsurely.
âAman? Why do you sound like a woman?â Hite slurred. Â He hiccupped and continued, âAre you cheating on Bhabhi?â He asked in a loud whisper.
Priya smiled and shook her head at Hitenâs intoxicated state. Â He wasnât thinking straight.
âHiten,â Priya said, trying to get him to quiet down.
âAman! Â I need you to come back! Everyone left me.â Hiten shouted into the phone.
âHiten, calm down.â Priya said.
âI neeeeeeeeeeeeeeddd a woman in my life!â Hiten said in a singsong voice. Â He was beyond drunk. Â Priya was unsure what to say. Â She wished Aman would hurry up so that he could talk to his best friend.
âI hate that you left. Â You shouldâve stayed. It sucks that youâre married now. Â We could have gone to the bars and hit up some hot women.â Hiten said, still believing he was speaking to Aman. Â Priya let out an involuntary gasp. Â What kind of trouble did these two get into before she and Aman got married?
âHiten, Aman isâ¦â Priya started to say.
âAman! Heâs my best friend!â Hiten interrupted. Â He was so drunk, he couldnât even keep up with the conversation.
Aman emerged from the bathroom. Â Priya immediately held the phone out to him.
âItâs Hiten. Heâs really out of it.â She said.
Aman took the phone from her.
âHiten?â He said, concerned. Â âWhat are you talking about?â
Aman looked pensive as he listened to Hiten talk.
âDonât you dare get in a car. Â Youâre in no shape to drive.â Aman chided. Â âOkay, Iâm coming. Just donât move.â
âPriya,â Aman turned to Priya. Â âHiten is being an idiot. I have to make sure heâs okay.â
âOkay, sure.â Priya replied.
Aman left, still talking to Hiten on the phone. Â Priya worried about Hiten. Â He sounded so drunk. Â He was completely out of his senses. Â Hopefully, Aman could handle him. Â She felt too tired to stay awake and wait for Aman to return. Â All she could think about was the goodnight kiss that never happened.
When Priya woke up the next morning, Aman still wasnât home. Â Heâd probably spent the night at Hitenâs house. Â She looked at her phone. Â There werenât any missed calls or messages from Aman. Â Priya checked on Payal, who was still asleep. Â She mustâve been really tired, so Priya thought she should let her sleep in. Â She made her way downstairs in search of some breakfast.
A loud gasp escaped her as she was met with a figure sitting at the table. Â She wasnât expecting to see Aman. Â Aman looked at Priya, surprised.
âAre you okay?â he asked unsurely.
âI...Did you come home last night?â Priya asked.
âYeah I did.â Aman replied.
âIâ¦.didnât hear you.â she said.
âYou mustâve been too tired to notice.â Aman replied with a chuckle.
âIs Hiten okay?â Priya asked, changing the subject.
âYeah. Â He was as drunk as heâs ever been, but he passed out soon after I got there. Â Heâll be fine though.â Aman answered.
âIâm sorry I answered your phone. I had no right to.â Priya said quietly.
âItâs okay. I donât care. I have nothing  to hide.â Aman smiled.
Aman wondered if Priya would say anything about the kiss they shared last night. Â He wanted to talk to her about it, but Hiten needed him. Â He didnât want to upset Priya by talking about it, so he thought it best just to leave the matter alone. Â He wouldâve done just that, but every bone in his body was telling him that he should kiss her again. Â He needed to kiss her again.
Priya went into the kitchen to see what else had been prepared for breakfast. Â Aman followed her.
âPriya, Iâ¦â He started to say.  He heard footsteps approaching the kitchen, and suddenly a brilliant idea came to mind.
He grabbed Priya by the waist. Â She looked at him, shocked. Â Aman pulled her close and kissed her. Â He immediately felt relieved. Â Heâd been wanting to kiss Priya again since last night. Â Aman hands stayed firmly around Priya as he pulled her closer. Â Priya felt herself being pushed up against the counter. Â Amanâs lips were still on hers. Â Aman heard a gasp followed by hurried footsteps. Â He smiled against Priyaâs lips. Â Slowly, he broke the kiss.
âAman,â Priya said, surprised.
âI think it worked.â Aman said, peering out of the kitchen.
âWhat worked?â Priya asked.
âPayal saw us.â He answered, nonchalantly.
âShe what?â Priyaâs eyes went wide.
âShe saw us...kissing.â Aman repeated.
âYou kissed me...so she would see?â Priya asked incredulously.
âPriya, husbands kiss their wives. Â Payal has barely seen us touch each other. Â We need to be more believable. Â Donât you think?â Aman said with a smirk.
âThatâs the only reason why youâ¦â Priya trailed off.  She was a little heartbroken that Aman didnât kiss her because he wanted to.
âYeah, sorry if I..â Aman started.
âNo, donât be sorry.â Priya interrupted. Â She went to go see where Payal went.
âPayal, are you up here?â Priya called as she ascended the stairs. Â She walked into Payalâs room.
âDidi,â Payal was blushing. âSorry I walked in on you and Jija-jiâ¦â
âItâs okay.â Priya said quickly, a blush creeping onto her own cheeks.
âIâve never really seen anyone I know kissing like that. Â Ma and Baba never even held hands in front of me.â Payal giggled.
âWe didnât mean for you to see us.â Priya blushed even deeper.
âDidi, do you love Jija-ji?â Payal asked all of a sudden.
Priya hesitated. Â She wasnât expecting Payal to ask her something like that.
âNot yet, but Iâm starting to. Â Soon, Iâll learn to love him.â Priya couldnât stop herself from blushing. Â She looked down.
Payal smiled widely.
âIt must be so great to be falling in love. Iâm so jealous.â Payal admitted.
âWhen you get married, youâll fall in love too.â Priya said, hopefully.
âDo I have to have an arranged marriage?â Payal whined.  âA love marriage seems so much more romantic, you know.  And Rajivâ¦â
âRajiv?â Priya interrupted with a smiled.
âWell, heâs around, and heâs nice.â Payal tried to cover.
âSure, Payal, whatever you say.â Priya grinned. Â She knew that Payal didnât know about the plans Aman had of fixing her marriage with Rajiv once heâs settled a little more. Â Payal would no doubt be ecstatic. Â Priya could tell Payal had some sort of crush on Rajiv.
Aman paced nervously in the kitchen. Â He felt extremely anxious. Â The physical attraction between him and Priya had reached a whole new level ever since he kissed her. Â It was getting increasingly difficult to be civil around her. Â He had remained celibate since they got married, but he wasnât sure heâd be able to stay that way for much longer. Â He hoped that all that talk of children would convince her to give in and finally consummate their marriage, but thatâs not what happened. Â He decided that the best plan of action would be to just leave. Â He couldnât deal with this right now. Â Besides, he needed to check on Hiten to see if he was alright.
Aman knocked on Hitenâs apartment door after heâd driven into the city. Â No one answered. Â Aman, being Aman, took the spare key that was hidden in Hitenâs secret spot and let himself in.
âHiten!â Aman called as he entered.
He went straight to the bedroom, knowing the Hiten would still be asleep. Â He definitely was not a morning person.
âWake up!â Aman shouted.
Hiten mumbled something inaudible.
âCome on Hiten. I need some advice. Â Come get drinks with me.â Aman hit him hard with a pillow.
Hiten popped up and looked over at the clock.
âNo more drinking.â he said, pouting. Â Last nightâs hangover had taken a toll on him.
âOkay then, coffee. Â Come on. Get dressed.â Aman countered.
Once Hiten was fully awake, Aman made himself comfortable on the sofa and turned on Hitenâs massive plasma screen TV. Â He mindlessly watched whatever was on til Hiten came out, ready to leave.
âLetâs go.â Hiten dragged his feet to the door.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you?â Aman asked, amused.
Hiten sat in the passenger seat of Amanâs sports car, sulking.
âNothing. Girl trouble, man.â he admitted.
âWanna talk about it?â Aman asked.
âNo.â Hiten pouted.
Aman gave him a look as he pulled up to their favorite cafe.
âYes.â Hiten gave in.
They exited the car and walked in. Â The hostess perked up upon seeing them.
âWell hey there, just two?â she asked, giving Aman her best âIâm sexyâ look.
âYeah, just two.â Aman confirmed.
They followed her to the back of the cafe. Â She took their drink orders and gave Aman wink as she walked away.
âHow the hell do you always get all the women? You werenât even trying!â Hiten complained.
âOh please. Stop being a baby.â Aman replied. Â âWhatâs your problem? Did you meet a girl last night?â
âSeveral.â Hiten smirked.
Aman rolled his eyes.
âAnd?â he prompted.
âNothing. Â None of them were interested. Â One even asked me to set her up with my âhot friend.â That bitch!â Hiten said with irritation.
âDamn, it must suck to be the friend of such an amazingly attractive guy.â Aman joked.
Hiten pouted even more.
âMaybe I should just get married.â He said quietly.
âWhy do you say that?â Aman asked, knowing Hiten wasnât the type to settle down.
âGuaranteed action every night.â Hiten answered.
Aman nearly choked on his coffee. Â He looked at Hiten incredulously. Â This was the last thing he needed to be talking about right now.
