Chapter 22
Learning to Love
âWonât you invite me inside?â asked Rakesh.
Priya stood there, completely frozen. Â She couldnât think. Â Rakesh took a step forward. She automatically stepped back. Â He kept walking towards her. Â Once inside the mansion, he turned and closed the door. Â Memories of last night came flooding back to Priya. Â Her breath hitched and she found it difficult for her to breath properly.
âPriya, donât think maybe we should finish what we were doing last night?â Rakesh said with malicious tone.
Priya backed away from him. Â She wanted to run away, but she couldnât. She was paralyzed with a crippling fear that obstructed her rationality.
âYou look beautiful today.â Rakesh said, trying to get under her skin. Â His eyes slowly traveled down her body. Â He took another step forward.
Priya didnât understand. What was Rakesh even doing here? Â Thank goodness Payal was out of the house.
âWhy areâ¦â Priya managed to say.  She couldnât continue.  The intensity with which Rakesh was looking at her rendered her speechless.  She hated the way he looked at her.
âWhy am I here?â Rakesh finished her question for her, âAman invited me.â He continued.
Aman invited him here? How could he? Well, itâs not like he knew what Rakesh tried to do. Â Priya still couldnât believe it.
âRakesh? Itâs about time. Everyone else is already here.â Amanâs voice came from behind Priya.
âHey Aman! I thought the meeting started at 3:30.â Rakesh replied.
âYeah so did I. Everyone just showed up early.â Aman said, âEveryone is in the conference room. Itâs down the hall and to the right.â
âOkay, Iâll just join them.â Rakesh said. Â Before heading down the hall, he winked at Priya.
âYou look terrified.â Aman pointed out.
âWhat?â Priya said, surprised that Aman had noticed the effect the Rakesh had on her.
âYou just look..scared.â Aman repeated.
âNo. Iâm fine.â Priya said, âIâm just going to go upstairs. Tell me when your meeting is over, okay?â Priya said, turning towards the stairs.
âYeah sure thing.â Aman said a little skeptically.
Priya rushed upstairs to Amanâs room. Â Once there, she closed and locked the door behind her. Â She wanted to make sure there was no way Rakesh could corner her and try to talk to her or worse, do something that would scar her for life. Â She sat patiently on Amanâs bed, just waiting for his meeting to be over. Â After Rakesh left, she would be free to leave. Â She felt ridiculous, hiding in Amanâs room like a child running away from her problems. Â However, she absolutely did not have the courage to confront Rakesh. Â She couldnât even talk to him! She needed him to leave.
Priya decided to occupy her mind with some television.  Her mind wasnât on whatever  she was watching.  She was too busy worrying about Rakesh.  She couldnât wait til he left!
âPriya? Are you in here?â Aman knocked on the door.
Priya opened it. Â She motioned for Aman to come inside and quickly closed it again.
âIs your meeting over?â she asked calmly.
âYeah, we just finished up.â Aman answered.
âDid everyone leave?â Priya asked.
âYeah, Rakesh was the last one. He just left.â Aman answered.
Priya cringed at the mention of Rakesh.
âAman, I need to tell you something.â Priya said immediately.
âWhatâs wrong?â Aman asked.
âI...Last night, what happenedâ¦â Priya couldnât tell him, not yet.
âWhat is it, Priya? Just tell me.â Aman said gently.
âAman, I need you to promise me that you wonât let Payal marry Rakesh.â Priya said. Â Tears started to form in her eyes.
âWhat? Why this all of a sudden?â asked Aman, confused.
âI just need to know that Payal wonât end up married to Rakesh no matter what.â Priya said.
âI think Payal is too young to get married. Iâm against any marriage plans for her at the moment.â Aman said.
âWhy are you being so evasive? Aman, I need you to promise me that Rakesh and Payal wonât be married. Please, Aman.â Priya was nearly begging.
âI...canât promise you that.â Aman said guiltily.
âWhy not?â Priya couldnât believe this, âYouâre the one who said that Rakesh wouldnât be a good husband for Payal. Â Heâd be unfaithful.â Priya said.
âWeâre thinking about partnering in a hotel project. Â Ashritha Hotels. Itâll be a chain in India, starting in Mumbai. Â Itâs a grand project. Â For Rakesh to marry into the family would be great! Donât you think?â Aman said.
Priya remembered seeing something about this project one day when she was in Amanâs study. It seemed like an important project, but she couldnât let Payalâs happiness be sacrificed for some project.
âNo.â Priya said. Â Tears were falling down her cheeks. Â âAman, you canât let Rakesh and Payal get married.â
âPriya, donât cry. Itâs only a possibility. Â This doesnât mean itâs going to happen.â Aman said. Â He reached for her, but she back away.
âYou donât understand,â she said, âYou canât let them get married. Â There canât even be a possibility.â
âWhy not?â Aman asked. Â He thought that Rakesh and Payal wouldnât make a good couple, primarily because of the age difference. Â He was hoping that being married to someone like Payal would make Rakesh to improve his ways.
âAman, last night, Rakesh was...the man in the storage room.â Priya finally admitted. Â She looked down, still unable to stop her tears.
Aman looked at Priya, unable to fully comprehend what sheâd just told him.
âPriya, I know you donât want Payal and Rakesh to get married, but thatâs a serious allegation.â Aman said.
Priya looked at Aman, shocked. Â He didnât believe her!
âIâm telling you the truth. Heâs the one who tried toâ¦.â Priya couldnât say.  She just couldnât.
âYou said you didnât know who it was.â Aman retorted.
âI lied,â admitted Priya quietly, âHe threatened me.â
Aman paused, thinking for a second. Â Priya didnât know anyone else at the party besides Nikhil and Neha, who were dancing and Hiten, who was with Aman. Â She wouldnât have gone anywhere with a stranger. Â It would make sense that she was with Rakesh, but why were they in the storage room together?
What exactly were you doing in the storage room with him, Priya?â Aman asked suspiciously.
âAman...I...just went to talk with him. He knew about the marriage, but he lied to you and said that he didnât.â Priya told him. Â She was growing frustrated.
âYou have to believe me.â Â Priya added sadly.
âIâm gonna kill him.â Aman said angrily.
Priya grabbed his arm to stop him from leaving the room.
âNo! Donât hurt him, Aman. Â Youâll just get in trouble.â Priya tried to reason with him.
âFine, Priya. I wonât hurt him, but Iâll ruin him. I promise you that. Â And Payal is NOT getting married to him.â Aman replied.
He angrily stomped out of the room. Â Priya didnât follow him. Â She wasnât sure if he was fully convinced that she was telling him the truth.
Aman raced to his car. Â He sped away in the direction of Rakeshâs house. Even though he told Priya he didnât intend to hurt Rakesh, he was about to do just that. Â Aman saw red as he drove. He was too angry to function rationally. Â If Rakesh so much as looked at Priya again, Aman was sure heâd kill him right then and there. Â Aman slammed on the brakes in front of Rakeshâs house. Â Guards approached him. Â He calmed himself down and told them that he was there to see Rakesh for business reasons. Â They let him in with no further inquiry.
âRakesh!â Aman shouted as soon as he was inside. Â He rushed through the hallways, searching for anyone that could tell him where Rakesh was.
âAman? What are you doing here?â Rakesh asked, âWhy donât we step into my office,â he suggested.
Aman followed him.
âTo what do I owe this pleasant surprise?â Rakesh asked.
Aman said nothing. Â Rakesh sat down and motioned for Aman to sit down, but Aman chose to remain standing.
âAman, what is it?â Rakesh asked. Â He stood up, facing Aman.
Suddenly, Aman swung his fist and punched Rakesh right in the face. Â Rakesh was flung backwards. Â Aman punched him again. Â He grabbed his collar and slammed him into the bookcase. Â Rakesh tried to hit back but missed.
âThe deal is off.â Aman said. Â He grabbed the contracts off of Rakeshâs desk and tore them in half. Â He threw another punch. Â Blood started oozing from Rakeshâs mouth.
âI know what you tried to do to Priya. Â You will not touch her again. Do you understand me? Â If you ever go near her again, I will kill you. Â You can be sure about that.â Aman growled.
âAman, wait.â Rakesh said. Â He couldnât lose such a lucrative deal. Â âI didnât do anything to her. Â She wanted it.â Rakesh lied.
âDonât lie to me, Rakesh. Â Sheâs traumatized because of what you did.â Aman countered.
âSheâs just mad we got caught.â Rakesh replied. Â Amanâs fist connected with his face once again.
âDonât you dare talk about my wife, you bastard!â He yelled. Â He threatened to get the police involved if Rakesh came near Priya again. Â Rakesh knew if the police got involved, no one would believe him over Priya. Â He would be ruined. Â No one would want to do business with a felon.
âBe careful, Aman. Â One day, this day will come back to haunt you.â Rakesh threatened as Aman walked away. Â Aman scoffed at his words.
He stalked back to his car. Â He angrily drove back home. Â Rakeshâs words rang in Amanâs ears.
âSheâs just mad we got caught.â
Aman didnât know if he suspected Priya of cheating. Â All he knew what that he really hoped it wasnât true.
âPriya!â He shouted as he entered his mansion. Â He slammed the door shut and threw his keys on the nearest table. Â He went into the kitchen.
âPriya?â he called again.
âWhat happened?â Priya asked, coming into view.
âI went to see Rakesh.â Aman said.
Priyaâs eyes grew wide.
âWhat did you do?â Priya asked morosely.
âI...told him to stay away from you.â Aman said.
Priya walked up to him. Â She took his hand and examine the blood on his knuckles.
âYou hit him.â she stated.
âHe deserved it.â Aman replied.
Priyaâs eyes searched his face.
âWhat?â Aman asked, unsure about what she was looking at.
âAre you okay? Did he hit you?â she asked, worried.
âIâm fine. I need to talk to you though.â Aman said.
âAbout what?â Priya asked. Â She was still looking to see if Aman was hurt.
âPriya, why did you follow Rakesh to that storage room?â Aman asked.
âI told you. We needed to talk about Payal. He knew about the marriage.â Priya answered.
âYou couldâve talked at the party? Why leave? Why leave without informing me?â Aman asked.
âHe wanted to go somewhere quieter, I guess.â Priya replied. Â âI thought you were busy, so I just told Payal and left. I didnât think that anything was going to happen.â
âPriya, please just tell me the truth. Â I promise I wonât be mad.â Aman said.
âThe truth about what?â Priya asked. Â She was confused. Â She was telling nothing but the truth.
âIs there something going on between you and Rakesh?â Â Aman asked.
He regretted asking as soon as the question was out of his mouth. Â The color had completely drained from Priyaâs face. Â She looked like she wanted to cry.
âN-no,â she stammered, âWhy would you think that?â
âI donât know, Priya. Itâs just something Rakesh said.â Aman answered.
âI would never...Iâ¦.Aman, I donât even know to say.â she said sadly.  Her eyes started to water.  Aman immediately felt bad for suspecting her.  Of course, Priya wouldnât be unfaithful.
âPlease donât cry. Â Iâm sorry! Â When he said what he said, I just needed to make sure that nothing was going on.â Aman apologized. Â He reached out and wiped away the lone tear that had fallen onto Priyaâs cheek. Â She stepped back, away from him.
How could he just accuse her and Rakesh of being together? Â Rakesh had attacked her against her will and Aman thought that Priya welcomed Rakeshâs advances. Â She could never even think about being with another man. Â Aman was her husband, and she knew sheâd always remain faithful to him, whether they ever fell in love with each other or not.
âPriya,â Amanâs voice broke her away from her thoughts, âIâm so sorry.â He apologized again.
Priya didnât reply. Â She turned around and walked away. Â She was on her way up the stairs, when Payal came back.
âDidi! We had so much fun. Â Movies here in America are so short. Â I thought we shouldâve watched another one, but itâs okay. I can go again another time. Â You should come too. Youâd really enjoy it. And you know what, Didi? Rajiv is so sweet! I hope I get to see him again. Donât worry, though. Neha was with us the entire time.â Payal talked so quickly that Priya was having a difficult time keeping up. Â She was still upset about Amanâs accusations and couldnât focus on anything else.
âPriya,â Aman walked in, âOh Payal, youâre back. Â How was the movie?â he asked, upon seeing Payal.
âIt was great, Jija-ji! I canât wait to go again.â Payal answered enthusiastically.
âIâm not feeling well. I think Iâll go lie down.â Priya interjected, turning back towards the stairs.
âDidi, you werenât feeling well the other night either. You sure are sick a lot. Are you alright?â Payal asked, suddenly concerned.
âIâm fine, Payal.â Priya replied, giving her sister a small smile.
Payal gasped. A smile appeared on her face.
âDidi! Are you pregnant?â Payal asked sheepishly.
Priyaâs eyes widened in shock. Â She blushed, but didnât smile. Â Aman looked just as shocked.
âN-no, Payal,â Aman struggled to answer, âShe canât be. Weâve neverâ¦â
âHad the chance to even think about children.â Priya interrupted him.
âWell you should!â Payal declared. Â âI want a little niece or nephew to play with.â Payal pouted playfully.
âI...We...Iâm going to go lie down now.â Priya repeated, unable to think of a response.
âFeel better, Didi!â Payal called after before retreating to the kitchen to find something to eat.
Aman paused at the bottom of the staircase, conflicted about whether or not to follow Priya upstairs. Â He decided that he should apologize to her again. Â He walked upstairs into his bedroom. Â There, he found Priya lying down on his bed. Â She was silently crying into her pillow. Â Aman sighed and sat down beside Priya. Â He placed a hand on her shoulder, trying to calm her down but she flinched away from him.
âPriya, Iâm sorry. I donât doubt you. I donât know what I was thinking. Â Please donât cry.â Aman pleaded. He hated when Priya cried, and he especially hated when he was the reason for her tears.
âPriya,â he tried again. Â Still, no response from Priya. He gently pulled her up off the pillow and into his embrace. Â He waited a moment, to see if she would pull away from him. Â When she didnât, he tried apologizing again.
âIâm really sorry, Priya. Please donât cry.â Aman said quietly. Â His arms were tightly wrapped around her. Â Priya looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears.
âI wouldnât...Iâd neverâ¦â Priya tried to say through her tears.
âI know youâd never be unfaithful, Priya. Iâm sorry I suspected you. Rakesh just makes me so angry.â Aman explained.
Priya quickly wiped away her tears, but remained in Amanâs embrace. Â She reveled in the warmth the close proximity of his body provided. Â Priya was still upset that Aman had suspected her of having an affair with someone like Rakesh, but she thought it was noble of him to go and actually beat Rakesh up for her. Â She leaned her head against his shoulder and closed her eyes. Â She wanted to stay in his arms forever.
âAre you alright?â Aman asked.
She slowly nodded. Â She looked up at him and reluctantly pulled away from him. Â His arms still wrapped lazily around her.
âPayal.â Priya said.
âSheâs not getting married to Rakesh. And we wonât be business partners.â Aman stated.
âIâm sorry.â Priya said.
âItâs not your fault. Â Rakesh was the one who ruined it all.â Aman replied, âActually, Iâve been thinking about Payal and Rajiv.â he admitted.
âRajiv?â Priya questioned.
âYeah. He works in one my companies. Â He also goes to school part time. Heâs working on getting his MBA. Â Maybe after a year or so and a promotion or two, he would be worthy of Payal. Â She seems to really like him.â Aman explained.
Priya thought for a moment. It all sounded okay.
âSheâs too young.â Priya said simply.
âRajiv isnât established yet either. Â Maybe we can get them engaged for a few years and they can get married when theyâre older.â Aman suggested.
âOkay, they should get to know each more though. I want Payal to be happy.â Priya said.
âMe too, Priya, me too.â Aman agreed.
The two went downstairs to join Payal. Â It was almost time for dinner. Â They just wanted to have a nice, quiet dinner after such a drama filled day. Â Of course, Payalâs constant chatter didnât allow dinnertime to stay quiet for long, but neither of them minded. Â After dinner, Payal retired to her room, and Aman and Priya did the same. Â Priya laid down on Amanâs bed, while Aman settled down beside her. Â He decided to get some work done on his laptop. Â Priya could hear the sounds of the keys as Aman typed. Â Her eyes fluttered closed.
âPriya, are you awake?â Amanâs voice reached her ears.
Priyaâs eyes shot open. Â The lights were now off, and Aman was no longer on his laptop. Â Instead, he was laying beside her.
âYes,â she answered him now that she really was awake.
âDo you remember what Payal said about children?â Aman asked. Â His voice sounded nervous.
âYes?â Priya said unsurely.
âWell, I know you said you didnât want children, but I think sheâs right. Â We should start thinking about having children.â Aman said.
