Chapter 106
âIâm sorry, Mr. York. It was my fault today for not intervening in time, causing you discomfort. Iâll make sure to avoid such occurrences in the future.â Nina quickly apologized, fearing his anger might escalate into a big issue.
She apologized promptly and didnât argue back, prompting Nash to comment again, âYou realize your mistake quickly. Now, let me ask you, was it in the interest of the company or personal reasons?â Her actions just now were indeed driven by personal feelings. She might have felt upset, but she remained silent.
Nina responded, âOf course, itâs in the interest of the company. As long as I serve as your secretary, I must be accountable for my actions. Mr. York, you can dock my salary, I wonât complain.â
Mr. York was suddenly speechless, visibly displeased. Yet, he couldnât pinpoint any fault. And he didnât bother to do so.
Mr. York pursed his lips, his expression darkening instantly. He released her, distancing himself as if their conversation had never happened.
Nina felt relieved, thinking she had passed the test, but she noticed Mr. Yorkâs expression turning even darker. Adhering to her duties as a secretary, she cautiously probed, âMr. York, arenât you coming in? You havenât eaten much, are you hungry?â
Mr. York replied coldly, âCall Quincy and letâs go home now!â
Perhaps the incident with Miss Wallace had worsened his mood further. He was always unpredictable, making it difficult to gauge his emotions. Nina didnât dwell on it and promptly called Quincy, urging him to come out.
Meanwhile, she received a message from Scott, expressing concern about her prolonged absence. She reassured him of her safety and mentioned heading home soon.
Scott responded with a simple, âTake care.â
Nina found it odd that while Scott maintained a distance, he was also attentive and caring. It was a comfortable position she found herself in. The sensation was peculiar, like he knew something without explicitly stating it.
Seeing her texting, Mr. Yorkâs expression soured further as he inquired, âWhat were you Scott whispering about at the dinner table?â
Nina was caught off guard by the sudden questioning. She hadnât fully processed Scottâs confession to her, and now Mr. York was pressing her again.

She didnât want to disclose, deliberately hiding the truth: âWe just talked about some memories from our school days, exchanged a few words, nothing serious.â Mr. York coldly mocked, âYou remember things from over a decade ago so clearly. Your memory is quite impressive.â

Nina hesitated for a moment, lowering her gaze and unconsciously tightening her grip: âCan events from over a decade ago be forgotten so easily by you?â âIt depends on what it is,â Mr. York replied indifferently.
Nina continued, âIf we rewind to over a decade ago, do you remember any significant events?â
Mr. York furrowed his brows slightly, rubbed his temples, closed his eyes, and nonchalantly replied, âItâs been over a decade, Iâd rather not remember.â
Nina turned to gaze at his impeccably handsome face, With his eyes closed, he breathed steadily, seemingly not taking her words to heart or wanting to reminisce. Sometimes, she couldnât help but think that he had changed a lot. He was completely different from the young man she remembered.
She believed that the present Mr. York, if taken back over a decade, would not interfere much, nor would he come to her rescue. But ironically, that person was him. Perhaps for him, saving her was just an ordinary and forgettable past event.
Nina leaned her head against the seat, a bitter smile on her lips. Why was it so unforgettable for her? She survived because of her obsession with finding him.
âNina.â
Nina squinted for a moment, hearing someone calling her.
