Silent Vows: Chapter 46
Silent Vows: A Mafia Arranged Marriage Romance (The Byrne Brothers Book 1)
âDonât look in the mirror.â I did my best to keep Noemi facing away from the bathroom vanity. The last thing she needed to see was her fatherâs blood splattered across her face. She knew it was there. That was bad enough. She didnât need to see it. âArms up,â I instructed softly.
She did as she was told, having slipped into a state of shock as I whisked her away from the warehouse scene. The others could handle the falloutâcleanup and the authorities. Iâd had to get my wife out of there. Her poor little body was shaking like a leaf.
Once I stripped us both down, we stepped into the steaming shower. Her eyes drifted shut under the hot spray of water. Even blood splattered and wrecked, she was incredible. Smooth, creamy skin over soft curves. It was mesmerizing to watch the water run in rivulets down her body.
I let her absorb the waterâs warmth for several long minutes before I lathered her in soap. For once in our short relationship, she handed me complete control. We both needed it. After discovering she had wound up at the warehouse and feeling like all of our plans had erupted into total chaos, I needed to feel a sense of control. I needed to feel her unharmed body warm and alive beneath my fingers.
Noemi angled her head back so I could wash her hair. It wasnât something Iâd ever done before, so when I finished, and she opened tear-filled eyes, I had a moment of panic that Iâd gotten the damn shampoo in her eyes.
âWhat is it?â I asked, my entire body tensing.
âConner, Iâm so sorry. I left your gun at the warehouse. It was the one from your nightstand,â she said, her words growing frantic.
I huffed out a breath, smiling softly. âDonât worry about that, baby.â I cupped her face in my hands. âThe guys will take care of everything. Iâm just glad that if you were going to go, you went prepared.â I pressed my lips to her forehead, temple, and the bridge of her nose. âYou scared the shit out of me, Em.â The words were as raw and broken as my insides felt. I hadnât wanted to fuss at her, so Iâd kept my mouth shut, but I needed her to know how terrified Iâd been.
âI know, and Iâm so sorry. I would never have gone if I hadnât been so worried about you.â
I pulled her against me, wishing my damn dick understood the difference between comforting my traumatized wife and shower sex. âIâm just glad itâs over.â
âMe, too.â She pulled back, brows drawing together. âYou said over the phone that my uncle had verified Dad sabotaged Momâs carâhow?â
âThey got ahold of the detective working for Fausto. He doctored the investigation. He admitted to removing the incendiary device that took out her brakes and had modified the accident report. Weâre connected to half the NYPD. Iâd say your father was lucky one of ours wasnât the first to respond to the scene, but I imagine he planned that as well and had his guy on call.â
âIt all blows my mind.â She shook her head just slightly. âAnd those men who came after us in the car. They were sent to kill me. What kind of father does that?â
âThe kind who doesnât deserve a second thought.â I brought her eyes to mine, holding them until she nodded. âIâm just glad he was dumb enough to take our bait.â
âBait?â
âWe intentionally leaked information about our meeting today. Keir and his men were stationed around the perimeter to let Fausto think heâd successfully surrounded us, but we knew we had the Albanians in our pocket. Of course, there was always a chance they wouldnât uphold their end of the bargain, but it was a risk we decided to take. Their leader knew theyâd fucked up making an enemy of us, and working against the Italians would only have made things worse for them. Agreeing to be bought was the same as saving their own asses. It wonât buy them indefinite immunity, but thereâs peace for now.â
âYou paid them?â
I nodded, hating how worry etched into her face.
âHow much?â
âTotally inconsequential when compared to your safety.â I smiled, hoping to reassure her. âAnd besides, everything we did has strengthened our ties to the Italians more than any abstract alliance could have.â
Finally, a smile formed on her lips. Small, but it was a start.
âIâm glad. Weâre really not a bad lot.â As soon as the smile formed, it faded. âI feel so bad for Sante, though.â
âIt wasnât an easy lesson,â I admitted. âBut Renzo took your brother home with him. I think the two will talk. Heâll be a much better role model for Sante in the long run.â
âYeah.â She peered innocently up at me, forest green lined with inky black lashes. âDo you think you can take me to see him tomorrow?â
Fuck, look at me like that, and Iâll take you to the goddamn moon.
âYeah, we can do that.â I brought my lips to hers, slow but ardent. âNow, letâs get you dried off and dressed before you prune into nothing.â
âBut you didnât even wash up.â
âThis wasnât about me.â I gently smacked her ass and smirked. âNow, move.â
