Chapter 143
Savvy Son-in-law by VKBoy
CHAPTER 143 Rebecca came home after meeting with Sheila the lawyer. Veronica was taking the children to the movie, so she thought of Benjamin for a second. She wanted to watch with him, but she wasnât in the mood right now. âI wonder what heâs doing. Should I call and tell him to go and watch the movie alone?â she pondered In Elizabethâs room, Shawn slapped his wife repeatedly even after she began crying. â70 freaking million! You think money is water? Who told you to buy a house and a private jet?â âI-I... Iâm sorry,â she apologized in a crying tone. âI wonât buy anything without asking you again.â Her whole face turned red.
Seeing her like that, Shawn gritted his teeth. âCome here.â She was shaking as he hesitantly approached him, thinking he was going to hit her again. However, he hugged her tightly and kissed her on the head. âDonât make me hit you again,â Shawnâs eyes slightly teared up, though no tears leaked out from the corners of his eyes. âIâm afraid weâll have to sell all those things you bought.â âA-At least keep the house,â she said in a soft, meek tone. âOur children like it.â âHaa... Iâll think about it.â Nolan and Dorothy, on the other hand, were in their guest room, cursing the entire Sterling family because they lost their gold. âThat bastard Jacob didnât even come home. His movies are more important than his family!â Nolan was gnashing his old teeth. âWe shouldnât have married our daughter into this family!â âLetâs see what happens,â Dorothy said patiently. âOur daughter is still young and is in good shape. It wonât be hard for her to find another man.â
At Pure Waters bar.
Alfred strode into the bar with five movie tickets. There were no customers in the bar at the moment.
âAre those what I think they are?â Shadow asked.
Alfred grinned and looked at Benjamin who was still asleep. âDid he drink excessively last night as well?â
âI think heâs numbing the pain with it,â Shadow lowered his head slightly and sighed. âHe doesnât stop no matter how much I tell him.â âAt least heâs not lashing out in rage like his dad used to after drinking,â Alfred chortled.â Anyway, this has to be expected since he fell in love with a woman full of issues. Daddy issues. Mominy issues. Sibling issues and what not. From what I can tell, nobody has been emotionally available for her when she needed it. Master Benjamin also sort of went through the same thing, being forced to fight for freedom and all... Maybe thatâs why he feels a connection with her? Itâs just my guess.â âI heard people say love can shatter hearts like glass,â Shadow voiced his mind, his voice full of worry. âI just hope this thing called âloveâ doesnât shatter his heart.â âHoping isnât all we can do,â Alfred waved the movie tickets in his hand. Shadow somewhat grinned and gave a thumbs-up. âYou havenât gone senile yet.â
Elsewhere in the city.
Jacob was giving an interview to a popular radio station. He talked about his movies and the latest release El Man. Everything was going great until one of the female hosts asked, âIs it true that you didnât want to pay the tax, and so you made films with hundreds of millions?â
âI have always paid my taxes, my lady,â Jacob replied with a smile. âTax to the government is like motherâs milk to the baby. If we donât feed our babies well, theyâll look and act like you after growing up.â The female host began crying almost instantly, but Jacob couldnât care less. He shook hands with the other hands and concluded the interview. After walking out of the interview, Jacob took out his mobile. He had it switched off since morning because of the tax raid.
âItâs natural for the raids to happen before big movies are released, but Terry told me they werenât gonna raid me this time. He was dead wrong. At least Shawn hid the documents, so Iâm safe.â
He switched the mobile on. He had to, given the movie would be screened in the theaters pretty soon, and he would be receiving a lot of calls and messages. He was slightly shivering. The hairs on his arms stood up. âItâs been a while since I felt this... thrill, haha.â He laughed lightly. âIâm going to become a billionaire soon!â
At Terryâs office.
Terry, Langdon, and David were talking with a stranger covering his face with a mask. âItâs all done, right?â asked Terry.
âYou can rest assured, sir,â the masked man replied in a confident but snickering attitude.â Everything is going as planned.â
âIt better, or your whole life will be ruined and will be played in a theater exclusively for your family.â
âY-Yeah. Iâm aware.â
After the masked man left to the guest room, Terry glanced at David with a rather confused expression. âHow come the SWAT teams were called back?â
âThe vice-president called them back.â
âWhat?â Terry was shocked. âThese damned mafias have connections with someone that high up the ladder?â
âWell, they used to very much control the government in the past, so itâs no surprise,â David remarked. âBy the way, my son sent some bodyguards to deal with the son-in-law, but they all died. I told him to stop going after him until we corner that bastard. I have a feeling heâs probably connected with the mafia.â
âDoesnât matter. We should just fuck up everything heâs connected with,â Langdon opined.â
Since he works at Ryeâs Pizzas, Iâll talk with their CEO and get him fired. You just make sure that bastard Rodnie never gets out.â
Terry nodded. âNot as long as I have my position.â
At Janeâs apartment.
Rebecca just arrived, but she wasnât allowed to enter their flat. Janeâs mother stopped Rebecca outside.
âAunt Catherine,âRebecca was annoyed to say the least. âShe doesnât lift my calls, and youâre now letting me inside? What the hell is happening?â âI donât know, either,â Catherine looked confused just the same. âShe told me she would rather die than see your face.â âWhat?â Rebecca couldnât believe what she was hearing.
âCan you tell me what happened?â Catherine asked, her voice turning cold. âShe broke up with Donovan, and she doesnât want to talk to you. I donât want to jump to conclusions because youâre her childhood friend, but...â Rebeccaâs heart shook for a second. Her heart picked up pace, not liking where this was going. âN-No, no, no. Thereâs nothing like that.â
âHere you are,â Donovan, who had been secretly eavesdropping, now entered the scene and put his hand around Rebeccaâs shoulder and showered a cocky smile at Catherine. âWhy are you wasting your time with these low-lives?â
