Looney Tunes
Alpha's Little Mate
RHIANNON
I wake up in a warm, soft bed. As I slowly open my eyes, I see a man pacing with his back turned to me.
I quickly close my eyes.
Heâs on the phone. He sounds exasperated.
âJust...please. I need your help, man.â
...
âNo, Iâm not pawning her off on you!â
...
âListen, fucker, you know how hard this is for me to say, but you guys are stronger than us. You can protect her.â
...
He sighs loudly. âI already told you. I. DONâT. KNOW.â
...
âThe people that dropped her off said it was in the best interest of wolves that vamps do not find her. Thatâs all.â
...
âNo, it was a favor for Syb. She called me. Then, they just showed up with the girl.â
...
âIâll owe you, man. Please.â
...
âThank you. See you in a few days.â He drops his phone on the foot of the bed. â~Thank fuck,~â he sighs to himself.
âI know youâre awake. Your breathing pattern changed.â
I purse my lips but keep my eyes closed.
âYouâre safe. We arenât going to hurt you, Annie.â
My eyes snap open. âHey! How do you...â the words die in my throat. Itâs Hunter, from the library. âYou! Whatâs going on? Where am I?â
âYouâre on my land. Do you remember anything from last night?â
âI was at the mini mart and two weirdos attacked me.â
âAnything else?â
âUm,â my voice shakes, âthe weirdos were attacked by wolves and then...a-and then they melted into the street. Then the wolves turned into people.â
He nods his head quietly.
âUm, sir?â I whisper. âAm I...experiencing a psychotic episode?â
He chuckles. âNo. Look, maybe youâd better talk to Flo.â
He quickly leaves the room. I look toward the window and only see the sky. Damn, Iâm not on the ground floor.
Standing from the bed, I start to panic.
Wolf people? People getting their heads ripped off then melting away into nothing? It had to be some kind of hallucination.
He never actually confirmed that what I saw was real.
The door clicks open and Flo comes in with Hunter.
âOh, honey,â she rushes to me and hugs me tightly. âYou must be so frightened and confused.â
âFlo, whatâs going on?â
She bites her lip and looks at Hunter.
âHoney, I donât even know where to start.â
âWolf people,â I whisper quietly. âLetâs start with the wolf people.â
Hunter chuckles behind Flo.
âNot âwolf people.â Werewolves.â He says like thatâs a completely normal thing to say.
âRight now, youâre on pack land. Hunter is the alpha of this pack. Weâve been protecting you since you woke up from your accident,â Flo says gently.
âWhoa, okay, break down each of those things further, please. Werewolves? The alpha? Protecting me from what?â
Hunter explains, âNine months ago, my cousin called and asked for a favor. A few weeks later, some people showed up with you. You were in a coma.
âThey rented your apartment from usâwe own the buildingâand set it up for you. They said you wouldnât remember anything when you woke up.
âThey asked us to watch out for you. We asked Flo to give you a job at the library so she could watch out for you too.â
âWho were the people that left me here?â
âWe donât know,â he says quietly.
âSo, everything about my lifeâ¦is fake? The apartment, my job, everything?â
âWe donât know. We donât know what is real or fake about the information you have about your life.â Floâs voice is soft.
âWhat are you protecting me from?â
Hunter blows out a harsh breath. âVampires.â
I let out a loud manic laugh.
âRight! Vampires. Of course youâre protecting me from vampires. Just some werewolves protecting me from vampires. Thatâs super believable and not at all insane!â
I start marching toward the door.
Flo grabs my arm lightly. âSweetheart, I know it seems impossible. Trust me, when I found out about wolves and vampires, I didnât believe it either.â
âSeems impossible? This is absolutely looney tunes!â
âLook, Annie,â Hunter tries again, âwe donât know why they wanted us to protect you, but we were told that, for whatever reason, vamps want you.
âIf they get you, it will be very bad for you and very bad for wolves.â
âSo the guys that melted into the street were vampires?â
âYes.â
âWere you one of the wolves?â
âYes.â
âFor the sake of argument, letâs say I believe you. I donât, but letâs say I do. What happens now?â
âEver been to Vegas?â he asks.
âHow am I supposed to know?â I deadpan.
âOh, right, sorry. A friend of mine, an alpha from Las Vegas, is on his way here. Heâs going to protect you.â
âWait, wait, wait a minute! I have to just pack up and go to Vegas with a stranger?!â
âThey found you here. Itâs only a matter of time before they come back around.â
I huff and run my hand over my messy, tangled braid.
âYour cousin, the one who called and asked you for the favor. Can you contact them? I need to know who dropped me off here.â
âSybilâsâ¦difficult to reach. Sheâs a rogue and we only hear from her when she contacts us.â
âA rogue?â Iâm getting frustrated.
âA packless wolf,â he explains. âLook, Iâll reach out to some people, see if I can get a handle on her.â
I sigh deeply. âThank you.â
He nods. âAny more questions?â
âWhatâs an alpha?â
âThe leader of a pack. Each group of wolves lives together in a pack. Each pack has a leader, kind of like a boss, a father, and a brother rolled into one.â
I nod my head. âAnd youâre the alpha here?â
âYes.â
âDid they, like, vote for you?â
He snorts. âNo. Being the alpha of a pack is a gift from the moon. We are selected. As soon as an alpha is born, you can tell.
âWeâre bigger, faster, stronger, and generally more interested in training than other kids. Itâs something wolves can sense.â
I have so many more questions, but I decide to leave it alone for now. I walk over to the large window. The view is beautiful.
There is a large open field with a playground and people are playing soccer close to the building. Beyond it, there is a forest that looks like it goes on forever.
From where Iâm standing, itâs treetops as far as the eye can see. Just as Iâm about to turn away, four wolves walk out of the tree line. They stop and change into women.
âOh shit,â I whisper.
Turning around slowly, Hunter and Flo both have small, nervous smiles. They think Iâm about to freak out. I inhale and hold my breath for five seconds, then exhale.
âOkay then,â I say as calmly as I possibly can.
âWould you like to come eat with us? We eat together, like a family.â
Iâm starving. Sighing deeply, I nod my head.
