Chapter 549
Changing only for her (Sophie and Tristan)
âOld Mr. Lombard, the wise are not taken in by rumors, so why are you? Since Tristan has chosen me,
do you not have faith in his decision?â
Do the malicious rumors really matter that much?
âThe rumors might seem trivial to you, but thatâs not the case in reality. It doesnât matter whether I
believe them or not. What matters is that people will be gossiping about you behind our backs!â
As the Lombards were the most powerful family in Jipsdale, this was an unacceptable fact.
âIn that case, Iâll make sure that they donât dare utter a single word about me.â
Although the rumors were unfounded, she would put a stop to them if the Lombard family found them
unsettling.
âSophie, youâre really not compatible with Tristan. Do you understand what Iâm trying to tell you?â
âOld Mr. Lombard, as I said before, whether weâre compatible or not isnât for you to judge. I wonât leave
him just because you donât approve of me.â
There was no way she would do such a thing.
âTell me then, what will it take for you to leave him?â Iâm willing to agree to any of her demands.
A smirk flashed across Sophieâs face. She had always assumed that such situations would only appear
on TV. Little did she expect herself to be embroiled in one.
âI wonât leave him no matter what.â Sophie declared with conviction, âFrom the moment I decided for us
to be together, breaking up never crossed my mind.â
âYouââ What a persistent girl. âFine. I have nothing more to say to you. Your capabilities will determine
whether you can keep your place by Tristanâs side.â
Words alone wonât count for much.
âIf you think that the only way for me to be qualified is to have Tanner Group outdo the Whitley family,
give me three months, and Iâll make it happen.â
Outdo the Whitley family? Is she deluding herself? Does she know the Whitley familyâs place in
Jipsdale?
Sophie gave him an earnest nod.
âMark my words. Tanner Group will surpass the Whitley family in three months.â As for Jennifer, who
has challenged me relentlessly, thereâs no need for me to show her any mercy.
âReally? In that case, Iâll be waiting. If you fail, youâll have to leave Tristan!â
âWhat if I succeed?â
It was clear from Williamâs expression that he didnât believe she could accomplish such a feat.
âWeâll discuss this again when you actually succeed.â He didnât want to waste time dwelling on
improbabilities.
Sophie didnât respond further, for certain problems could only be solved with actions instead of words.
Since he didnât have any faith in her, she would have to prove herself to him.
Thereafter, Jennifer headed to the Lombard residence after being summoned by William.
âOld Mr. Lombard, what did you want to see me about?â Jennifer put on a prim and proper demeanor.
Cognizant of what William wanted in his daughter-in-law, she attempted to play the role to perfection.
âJennifer, you have to work hard, all right? I really hope that you can become my daughter-in-law!â
William exclaimed.
Iâm willing to accept Winter or Jennifer; anyone but Sophie.
Jennifer responded with a graceful smile.
âI understand, Old Mr. Lombard. However, despite how much effort I put in, Mr. Tristan continues to
ignore me.â
Considering how much she loved Tristan, she obviously hoped to marry him.
âAre you telling me that youâre giving up?â William spoke candidly. âOf course, if thatâs what you desire,
I wonât force you into this.â
Jennifer shook her head at once.
âGive up? Never. Iâve had a crush on him for ten years. Thereâs no way Iâm giving up that easily.â
âGood. Sophie has proclaimed that she will outdo the Whitley family in three months. You had better
watch out.â At the end of the day, William was responsible for getting the Whitley family involved.
Hence, he felt obliged to warn them of what was coming.
âWhat?â It sounded like the most ludicrous joke to Jennifer. âWhat an audacious girl.â
The Whitley familyâs business, which has been operating for more than a century, wonât be outdone by
some bravado of hers.
âIâll definitely teach her a lesson so that she learns her place.â
âGood.â William, too, agreed that Sophieâs brazenness had crossed the line.
She might be a genius in medicine and one who excels in her studies, but to think that she can surpass
the Whitley family is nothing but a joke.
Meanwhile, Tristan rushed home upon learning of Williamâs meeting with Sophie. The moment he
arrived, he was greeted by the sight of Jennifer.
âIâm surprised to see you home. And here I was, thinking that you had forgotten your way back.â
Sipping coffee, William wasnât bothered to spare Tristan a glance, for he greatly disapproved of the
latterâs choice for a partner.
âWeâll discuss this again when you actually succeed.â He didnât want to waste time dwelling on
improbabilities.
âMr. Tristan, youâre back!â The sight of him triggered a bashful expression on Jenniferâs face.
Her love for him was true, and he was all that mattered to her.
âDid you go and see Sophie today?â Tristan questioned without holding back. âDidnât I tell you not to
interfere in my affairs? What did you say to her?â
âHah!â William couldnât help but sneer. âAre you interrogating me now? Do you not see me as your
father anymore? Whatâs the big deal about me meeting her? Since you donât allow me to interfere in
your affairs, why are you sticking your nose into mine now?â
âAs I said before, I donât want Sophie to be put in a difficult position. Therefore, thereâs no need for you
to ever meet her alone. Also, I will only accept her as my wife and no one else!â
âAre you threatening me now?â the angry William questioned. âLet me tell youââ
âYou donât have to tell me anything. You know my character better than anyone else, so stop trying to
stuff some lowly person into my arms! I donât want them!â Tristan wasnât going to tolerate being
manipulated.
âLowly person?â Jennifer stared at him in disbelief. Is he talking about me? How can he call me that?
âTristan, you have gone too far,â William criticized him.
âHave I? Thereâs a lot more from where that came from.â Upon learning that William had gone to see
Sophie unilaterally, Tristan was so infuriated that he rushed home at once.
Thereâs no way Iâm going to tolerate having my little darling criticized by someone else.
âYouââ
âOld Mr. Lombard, Iâm fine. You should calm down, as anger is bad for your health,â Jennifer pacified
him at once. She wasnât keen on seeing father and son falling out with each other.
âJennifer, as the eldest daughter of the Whitley family, you should have some principles. Going forward,
I donât want to see you again. Youâre nothing but an eyesore to me!â
He resented anyone who tried to come in between him and Sophie.
âMr. Tristan, what in the world have I done wrong?â I didnât even do anything!
âYou donât even have to do anything. Your existence itself annoys me!â
