Battle for the Luna
Chasing Kiarra: The Finale
Aidan
We stayed in place, waiting for Melodyâs signal.
~âWhatâs taking her so long?â~ Jack wondered.
I had no answer for him, but I got it. It was the waiting that was the worst.
It was not knowing what we were walking into or if we were walking out. Together. Whole.
Even though each second that ticked by felt like an eternity, I held my focus, and I needed Jack to do the same.
It was killing him that Ange was in this situation. I knew how desperate he was to free her, but I also knew how pissed off he was.
~âTake a look,â~ I said, nodding to the cars we could see parked in the Apex lot.
~âWhat the fuck!â~ Jackâs jaw dropped, but I wasnât surprised.
~âNow you get it?â~ I looked over at him.
~âThose sons of bitches!â~
Of the four pack Alphas weâd called on for help, three had made their way to the nightâs events.
~âNo wonder that Moon bastard was so cool about this!â~ Jack was seething.
Alpha Blue was a lone wolf. Not a rogue, but one foot in and one foot always out. Seeing his pack car here didnât surprise me.
Rand was never a close ally to us, but still, his allegiance to the Kendricks made me want to rip his throat out.
~How did I not see that?~
Now that we had the big picture and I knew what kind of support the Apex pack had, I wondered quietly what the hell was happening.
Purity was an obscure idea that one, maybe two packs observed.
The thought of recruiting new packs for the same reason was dangerous.
This information changed everything.
Finally, Melodyâs signal came through, ~âGold, I got her! You better move NOW!â~
~âWhere you headed, Melody?â~
There was nothing but silence.
~âMelody!â~
~âThereâs a panic room, weâre on the move, Aidan, donât know how long I can keep us hidden! Go south!â~
I looked at Jack, ~âItâs time to give the order!â~
Suddenly, like thieves in the night, my pack of warriors descended on the gates of the Apex Pack. Rustling behind them through the shadows, I looked for an opportunity to slide by the carnage.
The guards were heavy and came from all the packs present. We had our work cut out for us.
âOn my count, we flank right, go straight for the south end of the territory.â
âGot it, Alpha.â
âOne, twoââ
A wild-looking wolf suddenly dove on top of Jack, catching him by the side of the neck.
The two rolled away from me. I pounced, ripping the throat out of the female that had him in her clutches.
She was powerful. She struggled till the end.
This was definitely an Apex wolf.
âYou good, Jack?â
âGood!â
I noticed his scruff was bleeding badly. This wasnât a great start.
All around us, bodies struggled.
There were yelps, snarls, and deep growls.
There was death.
We kept pushing forward, but I knew we were outnumbered.
As fierce as we were, we needed backup.
~âWhoever is able, get the Apex Pack! We need your strength!â~
~âYes, Alpha!â~
The resounding response gave me a sense of pride. The loyalty of my pack was strong; we were going to make it through this.
~âJack, Iâve called for backup! Can you make it? Can you do this?â~
He was slower, though he was trying his best to keep pace. He knew, as well as I, that time was running out fast.
~âAlpha, I will go to Ange.â~
It was a command, a statement, but heâd earned that.
In any case, getting to Ange wasnât something Iâd deny him.
~âCome back with our luna.â~
Jack turned and bounded toward the prisoners. He was following his mateâs call.
Inch by inch, I made my way past the onslaught offensive of the Kendricks. They had been prepared, and I wasnât surprised.
Iâd decided to have that meeting. I knew extra bodies were better than none. But in the pit of my stomach, I was furious.
I had practically given them a fucking playbook of my plans.
Wolf after wolf came for me. Every time, I sunk my teeth deeper, more ravenously.
I would kill each and every one of these bastards if I had to.
The trouble was, that took time.
The longer they kept me here fighting, the further away I was from saving Kiarra.
Jack was leagues away by now, but I needed to know that the pack was going to be okay if I didnât make it out of there.
One of us had to.
~âOnce you have Angela, you get the fuck outta here; you hear me, Jack?â~
There was no response, but I knew heâd heard; he didnât have a choice.
~âJack, I mean it. When you get her, you go. Youâve done more than your part, brother. Thank you~.
Finally, I had fought a clearing and killed enough wolves in my path that I was able to head south.
Without warning, my paws started to vibrate. It was as if the ground was shaking in revolt. Tired of soaking up the blood of so many wolves.
A black and silverish smoke erupted, and to my dismay, there she was.
The witch the Kendricks had summoned was finally here, I supposed, to see her handiwork through.
I linked it with my pack.
~âTake her down! Do not let her speak! She will cast spells on you!â~
I ran past the carnage, but my pack did not disappoint.
I never looked back. I couldnât.
I needed to get to my mate.
Shit was hitting the fan. I was so close; I couldnât lose her now.
The sound of the witch made me shudder.
She had been taken out, a one-way ticket to the afterlife, or wherever the hell sorcerers go.
~âGold! You need to get here now!â ~Melody mind-linked me.
It was time.
I was finally going to get back my mate.
