Chapter 44 - Dealt With

Running from Fate

Daemon POV

When we finally did leave our room, it was to go straight to Matias's office to figure out what we were going to do with my mother. Sam met us in there, a knowing look on her face when we stepped in.

"So," Matias walked around to his chair, sitting down on it, and Sam and I both sat down in the two chairs that were on the other side of his desk.

"I think we just send her back to her pack. They can punish her more fittingly. The only thing we could really do is rough her up before sending her back." Sam shrugged, and Matias sighed, leaning back in his chair.

"We could do that. But I want to get more information out of her first," Matias met Sam's confused gaze before he explained what had gone down earlier. She remained quiet the whole time, eyes wide with surprise, and the occasional flash of anger.

When Matias finished, she ran a hand through her hair, closing her eyes and blowing out a puff of air.

"Goddess," She mumbled, before leaning forward again to look at me, then Matias.

"So, torture her for information?" Sam asked, and Matias didn't confirm, but we both know that that was probably what was going to happen. Matias looked at me.

"What do you want to do?" He asked gently, and I just shrugged. This wasn't really up my alley, so I figured they would take care of it.

"I don't care what you guys do to her. Just make sure she gets back to her pack so they can punish her too." I suggested, folding my hands in my lap. Matias nodded, then looked to Sam.

"Go get ready to deal with this. Grab a couple of the warriors too, two or three should be plenty." Matias said, and Sam nodded before standing and walking out of the room. He looked back at me, giving me a small smile.

"Do you want to be a part of this?" Matias asked. I thought about it for a second, before deciding that I didn't really want to. I had had enough of her for the rest of my life, and I would have just been in the way anyways.

"Not really. You can just tell me anything important afterward." Matias nodded, standing from his chair and walking around the desk towards me. I stood too, and he pulled me into his arms. I wrapped my arms around his waist, my head resting right underneath his head. He rested his head on mine with a sigh, pressing a soft kiss to my hair. We stayed like that for a few minutes before he pulled back. He repositioned his hands, holding my head, and placed a kiss on my forehead, then my nose, then my lips. I hummed into the kiss, bringing my hands up and wrapping them around his wrists. After a few seconds, he pulled away and touched our foreheads together. I smiled, opening my eyes to look into his. They were filled with love and adoration, and I could only assume that he saw the same thing when he looked into mine. Because Goddess did I love him.

"I have to go now," He whispered, kissing my forehead. "I'll come and find you when we're done, ok?" He pulled away fully this time, moving his hands to rest on my shoulders. I nodded, smiling before stepping forward and pressing a quick kiss to his lips. He smiled when I pulled away, before grabbing my hand and leading me out of his office.

I walked with him all the way to the doors that lead down to the cellars, stopping at the top as he turned to me, giving me one last kiss before he opened the door.

"Be safe," I called after him, and he nodded, giving me one last smile before the door shut behind him. I sighed, before turning away from the door and beginning my search for Jamie.

___

Surprisingly, Jamie was really hard to find. It took me almost twenty minutes to locate the small kid, and when I did, it was somewhere I wouldn't have expected.

The pack had a small library, mostly stocked with school books for the kids, children's books, and whatever someone requested. I found Jamie sitting on a beanbag with a children's book in his lap, his finger gliding along with the page as he mouthed the words. I smiled softly, my heart filling with love at the sight of him before I walked over.

He didn't notice I was even there until I had sat down beside him, too engrossed in the book to notice me. I tapped him in the shoulder lightly, and his head snapped up, brown eyes wide. He smiled wide when he realized it was me, before scrambling over into my lap. I laughed as he plopped himself down, before grabbing his book again.

"Hi, Daemon! Do y-y-you want to r-read-read with me?" He asked, looking up at me with wide eyes. I nodded, wrapping my arms around his shoulders. He giggled, nuzzling his head back against my chest.

"What are you reading?" I asked, and Jamie launched into a very detailed explanation of the children's book, explaining every little thing he had read up until now. I nodded along, just patiently listening to him explain. When he finished his explanation, he started reading right away again, this time out loud. He only stuttered here and there, and I never stopped to try and help him on a word unless he asked. And he never did.

We sat like that for hours, just reading random kids' books, until Matias walked through the doors and spotted us. His face washed over with relief, the tension from his body slowly evaporating.

"M-M-Matias!" Jamie screeched, climbing out of my lap and running over to my mate. I laughed as Jamie flung himself at Matias, and Matias caught him, swinging him around in the air. Jamie squealed with delight before Matias threw him over his shoulder and walked back over to me. Jamie squealed and giggled the whole way, and when he was put down he was right back in my lap. Matias pulled another beanbag over and sat it next to ours, before dropping down into it with a groan. He closed his eyes and dropped his head on my shoulder, and I raised one of my hands and began running it through his hair.

"How did it go?" I asked quietly, watching my mate. He sighed, and let more of his weight rest on my shoulder.

"As well as it could have, I guess," He replied, his voice tired and low. "That woman is insufferable." I nodded, and kissed his head, before turning my attention back to Jamie, who had left my lap to find a book and was now returning with it.

"Is M-Matias re-reading with u-u-us-us?" Jamie asked, plopping himself back down on my lap. Jamie looked at Matias, who opened his eyes and offered the boy a smile.

"Of course, what are we reading?" Jamie's smiled got impossibly wider as he showed us the book and told us what it was about.

___

Around nine, Jamie started to drift off. We had only left the library for dinner, before returning right away, upon Jamie's insistence. The boy really loved to read. Matias and I both laughed as he started to fall asleep mid-sentence, before he would snap his head back up and continue reading, only to repeat the process until he finally did fall asleep.

We took him back to his room and got him ready for bed, tucking him in and giving him his dinosaur, which he immediately clung onto. I pressed a soft kiss to his head and smoothed down his curls, before grabbing Matias's hand and walking out of his room, shutting the door behind me quietly.

We walked back up to our room in comfortable silence, our hands latched together the whole way.

We did our nightly routine in silence too; showering, brushing teeth, pajamas, and finally, we were in bed. Facing each other, Matias had his arms wrapped around me, my face pushed into his chest. He sighed deeply, before breaking the silence that had consumed us.

"She didn't give us much that we didn't already know. The doctors that had run that place had all been kicked out of their packs, specifically for suggesting to do those experiments on pack wolves. They switched the rogues, but apparently, the wild mindset of rogues didn't work with the experiments, so they started kidnapping pack wolves." Matias explained, his arms tightening around me. I started tracing patterns on his stomach with my fingers, hoping it would calm him down a bit.

"She mentioned how they usually had inside help from the packs they would kidnap from. We know that she helped them with taking...you...but we don't know if they had more help from someone actually in our pack," I nodded, shifting my head and looking up at him. He met my eyes, and leaned forward, and pressed a soft kiss to my forehead.

"We'll have to figure that out tomorrow and question and suspicious people. So that will probably take a while," I nodded again, and he closed his eyes, pressing our foreheads together. "She's been dealt with though, sent back to her pack." I sighed, and I could feel the nerves that finally left me knowing that she was gone now. Matias kissed my forehead again.

"She won't be able to get to you anymore. Not while I'm still here," He whispered, and I smiled, looking into his eyes again. He quickly closed the distance between us, sealing our lips together softly. I pulled back after a few seconds, smiling.

"Thank you," I whispered, bringing a hand up to gently caress his face. "For everything."

I didn't let him respond though, instead, resuming our kiss. I kissed him breathless, and he returned the favor, and we stayed like that until we fell asleep; content with each other and with the knowledge that I, we, were safe again.

For now at least.
