David’s voice remained maddeningly calm. “Alright, I’ll believe you. Then how about I transfer you to the CEO’s office as my secretary? That way, you’ll always have time for me.”

Caroline took a sharp breath, struggling to keep her composure.

She was on the verge of snapping.

“David, I’d rather quit than work under you as a secretary!” Her voice cracked slightly as she slammed the meeting documents onto the table.

“You can go ahead and yell louder,” David said casually. “That way, everyone outside can hear you.”

Caroline clenched her jaw.

“If you have the strength to argue, then I guess you’re doing fine,” he added smoothly. “That’s good to know.”

Fine? He was calling this fine? She was on the verge of exploding, and he had the nerve to act like this was some minor disagreement.

The silence between them stretched uncomfortably.

Then, David suddenly stood up and stepped toward her. “I just wanted to check on you.”

He reached out, intending to brush a stray strand of hair from her face.

Caroline flinched. Without thinking, she backed away, retreating several steps.

A cold shiver ran through her body.

Even she couldn’t control it.

The memories from last night still clung to her, raw and unforgiving.

She feared his touch.

This was the man who had ignored her protests, dismissed the fact that she was pregnant, and taken what he wanted regardless of her pain.

“Caroline,” David slowly let his hand drop. “Do you really have to fight me on this?”

“Fight you?” she scoffed. “Do I even have that choice?”

“I know last night... I shouldn’t have done that.”

Her eyes snapped to his, her breath catching. Was he admitting fault? That was unexpected.

But then, with infuriating ease, he continued, “But if I had to do it over, I’d do the exact same thing.”

It’ll help.”

Her legs gave out. She collapsed into the chair, feeling her strength drain away.

Her lips had gone pale.

“Caroline?” David frowned, stepping closer. “Are you in that much pain?”

“Yes,” she answered, her voice shaking. “It hurts. It hurts so much I feel like I’m dying. I can’t take it.”

David straightened immediately. “I’m taking you to the hospital.”

He reached out to lift her, but she smacked his hand away. “Don’t touch me!”

“But you just said-”

Before he could finish, Caroline pressed a trembling finger against her chest.
