David smirked, though his eyes remained ice–cold, devoid of any warmth. “No need to apologize. I was just about to pay you a visit myself.”

His gaze flicked past them. “Elizabeth didn’t come?“.

“Elizabeth said she wasn’t allowed inside the Ellison residence. Madam Harper forbade her from coming here.”

“And where is she now?”

Samantha quickly answered, “Elizabeth is in the hospital.”

David didn’t care why she was there. He simply remarked, “Did she stay away because she knew she wasn’t welcome, or because she didn’t dare to show up?”

“Mr. Ellison, Elizabeth wanted to come, but she couldn Samantha insisted.

Caroline scoffed, sensing something off. “She’s been dying to cling to David twenty–four hours a day, and suddenly, she can’t come? What happened? Did she break her legs or go blind?*
