Chapter 203
Hitched & Hitched Again: A Comedy of Marital Mayhem ( Elysia and Tarquin)
Tarquin was in a foul mood, and as his right hand man, Lowell saw right through it. Driving down the highway, he tried to lighten the atmosphere.
âTarquin, if somethingâs eating at you, why donât you just hash it out with Ms. Thorne? No point in bottling it up. You keep this up, and itâs clear Ms. Thorneâs feeling it too.â
Tarquinâs reply was icy. âAnd whatâs her discomfort to you?â
Lowellâs smile was strained. âNothing, but itâs obvious sheâs getting under your skin, and itâs tough watching you like this.â
âAnd youâve seen this how? What, are you psychic now?â
Lowell barely managed a chuckle. âCome on, even an idiot could see it! Ms. Thorneâs been a godsend to Elijah, and besides, sheâs a lady. Even if sheâs at fault, we could afford to be a bit more gracious and give her some slack.â
âNolaâs been good to Elijah too. Am I supposed to bend over backwards for her as well?â
âThatâs different. Nola Slater and Ms. Thorne arenât in the same league. Nolaâs efforts are, well, laughable, but Ms. Thorneâs a standâup woman.â
âIf sheâs so great, from now on, you can stick with her and leave me be!â
Lowell sighed. Every time Tarquin had a spat with Elysia, heâd turn into an unreasonable kid.
âTarquinâ¦â
âZip it!â
The funeral was a spectacle.
The Bradfords were abuzz with whispers at the sight of Tarquin.
âWhyâs he here?â
âNo idea. Didnât hear about him being invited. Maybe Gideon requested his presence?â
âHardly. He wouldnât be that senile. Inviting himâs like asking for trouble.â
Tarquin hadnât been invited; he came unasked.
His arrival sent a chill through the Bradfords, who watched him, uneasy and silent.
Allegra, weeping in front of the chapel, saw Tarquin and screamed, âWhy are you here? Who let you in? Get out! Lionel wouldnât want you here, get out!â
Tarquin ignored her. He wasnât there to mourn Lionel.
Gideon, seated prominently among the guests, caught Tarquinâs approach.
Tarquin, hands in pockets, walked over, ignoring the murmurs of the crowd.
But no one dared say a word, only Allegraâs hysterical cries filled the air.
Lowell moved to the chapel, lighting a candle for Lionel on Tarquinâs behalf.
Gideon frowned at Tarquin. âWhy did you come?â
âIâm here for you,â Tarquin replied, lighting a cigarette and taking a seat.
âYou couldâve just called. You know Allegraâs got a bone to pick with you! Lionel just died, and here you are, adding to her grief. Sheâs still your aunt, your dadâs sister.â
Tarquin scoffed. âHer sonâs death isnât on me.â
Gideon was puzzled. âIt sounds like youâre suggesting Lionelâs death was my doing.â
This piqued everyoneâs interest, no one wanting to miss out on the drama.
Tarquin didnât hesitate to give them something to talk about. He summoned Lionelâs father Larry, the folks from Verityâs side of the family, and even the elders to join in.
Gideon, clueless about Tarquinâs intent and visibly annoyed, pressed, âWhat are you trying to do?â
âSome things donât add up. Thought Iâd get some clarity from you here, Grandpa.â
âWhy air this in front of everyone? Couldnât you have said it over the phone?â
