This heartthrob⦠He was her husband. As Kerwinâs wheelchair was sliding, those people all around were stupefied. Even Emily, who was enjoying the limelight, slopped dancing Change the fact that youâre disabled. How pathetic!â Emily intended to mock Kerwin and Betty, but Kerwinâs dashing look and graceful dancing discouraged her.
The other audiences were also shocked and mesmerized, âGosh, Iâve thought that a man in a wheelchair could be so attractive.!! âThat woman named Betty is enviable to have such a devoted, romantic, and outstanding husband.â âHeâs the second son of the Martin family after all.â Some older people in the crowd recalled the past and sighed. âHe used to be a golden boy. If the kidnapping hadnât happenedâ¦â Sitting on Kerwinâs lap, Betty caught a word or two, raised her head, and looked over.
Kerwin stopped her by pinching her chin. âMind their words?â He was able to read her Betty smiled with embarrassment. âDonât mind them,â Kerwin whispered. His grip loosened and turned into a caress.
âJust enjoy the moment.â Deeper than usual, his voice was enchanting. Her mind blank, Betty nodded, wrapped her arms around his neck, and slid across the dance floor with him. Content with Bettyâs cooperation, Kerwin curled his lips. At the stairway on the second floor Old Bruce stood upright, overlooking the dance floor. The expression in his eyes changed when he saw Bettyâs broad smile and a faint one on Kerwinâs face. He hadnât seen his grandson smile like this for a long time. âSir,â a gray-
haired butler came up and said.
itâs about time. Should I see the guests out and arrange rooms for the young masters and Mrs. Martin?â
âYeah, itâs about time.â Old Bruce came to his senses and nodded, âOne more thing, take that girl named Betty to my study.â With that, Old Bruce turned around and headed to his study, The ball soon came to an end. Emily was the nominal star of the party, but her thunder was stolen by Betty, who was sitting on Kerwinâs lap the entire time. As the last piece of music ended, Betty stood up. Before the blush on her face could Subside, an old butler came over and said in respectful manner, âMrs. Martin, the old master invites you to his study.â Betty was stunned. Old Bruce wanted to see her? Because of the photos? Betty tensed up and turned to look at Kerwin at the thought of Old Bruceâs penetrating eyes. Kerwin nodded and said, âItâs okay, Grandpa is eccentric but reasonable.â Relieved a little, Betty followed the butler to the study on the second floor. Old Bruceâs study was quaint, with sandalwood incense burning, Betty went in and felt like going back to ancient times. In a robe, the old man was sitting behind the desk. His eagleâs eyes had been fixed on her since she came in. Betty did her best to fight back her nervousness, walked over to the desk, and greeted him in a reverent tone, âBruceâ¦â
âWhat did you call me?â Old Bruce asked in an authoritative voice. Betty froze in bewilderment. âSince youâve married Kerwin, you should call me grandpa.â Old Bruce saw her confusion, explained in spite of his Impatience, and added with a sneer, âYou and your sister, Emily, are quite different. She is eager to call me grandpa, but you wouldnât.â Bettyâs face blanched. To her surprise, Old Bruce knew that Emily and she were siblings. In retrospect, it made sense. She had been married to Kerwin for some time. There was no way Old Bruce hadnât investigated her. Anyway, Old Bruce let her call him grandpa, which meant that he was not going to disowni her. She heaved a sigh of relief and called out in obedience, âGrandpa ! Old Bruce nodded in satisfaction and raised his chin. âHave a seat.â Betty sat down before Old Bruceâs authoritative voice came again. âWhat do you think I called you over for?â
âBecause of the photos at the banquet, right?â Beffy plucked up the courage and . raised her head, deciding to take the chance âto explain everything. âGrandpa, these photos areâ¦!! Old Bruce interrupted her with a raise of his hand âThereâs no need to explain,â Old Bruce said in an irritable tone.
âYouâve been married to Kerwin for some time. Do you think I havenât figured out everything?â Old Bruce made himself clear through a tactful phrase. He had looked into the matter that happened two years ago and found out the truth. It was a setup. Only then did Betty realize why Old Bruce was neither surprised by the photos nor scolded her. Turned out he had learned about everything, Much relieved, Betty said in a sincere tone, âThank you, Grandpa.â âThereâs no need to thank me,â Old Bruce snorted.
âDo you think I didnât pursue the âmatter because youâre innocent?â
