Contract Marriage With The Disabled CEO
Chapter 41 The Reason He Pretended to Be Disabled Betty froze and shook her head.
Kerwin had said she might be better off not knowing some issues, so she didnât go further to question him.
âTen years ago, Kerwin was in a car accident.â Jason was blunt. âEveryone thought Kerwinâs leg was crippled in that accident, but he was just injured. His injuries were healed after he went to France.â
Betty recalled how she also seemed to have seen Kerwinâs car accident on the news.
At the time, Kerwin was barely 20 years old and had just started college. When he was kidnapped, the kidnapper offered an enormous ransom of 100 million dollars. The news was a local sensation.
It was said that the kidnapper tried to take Kerwin away as a hostage after receiving the ransom, but he was in a car accident on the road. The kidnapper was killed instantly, while Kerwin was seriously injured.
However, many details were not made public at the time, so people did not know that Kerwin was injured in both legs and only knew that he had been weak and sick since he went to America for treatment.
âIâve probably heard something about it,â Betty said. âSo he continued to pretend to be disabled after he was treated in America?â
âBut.â Jason tilted his head. âMrs. Martin, guess why?â
Betty found him to be funny.
Jason and Kerwin had completely different personalities. A person like Jason may be very popular with girls.
âYou want me to guess?â Betty pretended to think seriously. âIs he doing it to get the Martin family to let down their guards against him?â
Betty thought about why Kerwin was pretending to be disabled before, so she had her guess in her mind long ago.
As a journalist, although she did not know much about the inner affairs of powerful families, she could probably guess that the reason that Kerwin had tried so hard to hide the truth had something to do with his family.
She had never met Kerwinâs elder brother, Jeffreyâs father, Henry, who was rumored to be a very ambitious and ruthless man. Since Bruce was old, Henry was mainly responsible for managing the Martin family business.
Kerwin cut ties with the Martin family and started his own business from scratch, so he could avoid conflict with Henry.
Could it be that Kerwin is pretending to be a cripple because of his elder brother?
Jason gave Betty an approving look after hearing her speculation. âWell done. Youâre pretty smart.â
Betty chuckled, embarrassed. âIâve seen a lot of family dramas in TV series about rich families.â
Jason burst into laughter. âBecause the Martin family owns a large family business, the relationship between the family members is as complicated as what you have seen in those TV series. Although Kerwin seems to be arrogant, heâs had a hard time over the years.â
Betty was stunned but nodded.
Kerwin was healthy but in a wheelchair for the past ten years. And he had to defend himself from his family, so he must be very tired.
âSo,â Jason spoke again, suddenly withdrawing his smile and looking serious. âMrs. Martin, you must make him happy.â
Betty didnât expect Jason to say something like this and then froze.
av SO However, what kind of happiness could she bring to him?
Before Betty could answer his question, she suddenly heard a steady footstep and a cold voice. âWhat are you talking about?â
Betty turned her head and saw that it was Kerwin who had returned.
Kerwin was lanky. He was wearing a light blue shirt to show his perfect body shape.
Was WE Bettyâs eyes darkened.
How does it feel to be confined to a wheelchair for a man as brilliant as him?
âI was telling your wife that I fell in love with her at first sight. And Iâm about to steal her.â The moment Jason saw Kerwin, he put on a naughty smile. âKerwin, you know how charming I am. A lot of women admire me, so youâd better watch out.â
âStop making such a comparison!â Kerwin said as he walked over to the table. Then he unscrewed the red wine in his hand with a corkscrew. âYou are way out of her league.â
âGee, youâre so confident,â Jason grunted.
During the dinner with Jake, Betty found him to be hilarious. And Jake didnât wipe his mouth and got up until he finished the last dessert.
âMrs. Martin, I have a date later. Iâll leave you two alone. And Iâll see you next time.â
Betty and Kerwin sent Jason away. They watched Jason drive away his red sports car and then went back to the dining room.
Kerwin was taking the plates back to the kitchen.
âI got it,â Betty said immediately and tried to take over the plates, but he stopped her.
âI could still wash some dishes,â Kerwin whispered.
Betty had no choice but to wash the dishes with him.
After putting the dishes in the dishwasher, Kerwin said, âWhat did Jason say to you?â
Betty froze for a moment and was going to tell him the truth. âHe told me the reason why you pretended to be a cripple.â
âAlright.â Kerwin wasnât surprised.
Jason and Kerwin had been friends for years, so Kerwin could guess what Jason had told her.
âDo you blame me?â Kerwin raised his eyes to stare at Betty.
Betty froze and didnât respond. âBlame you for what?â
âI should have told you earlier.â Kerwin put the last plate into the sink.
Betty chuckled. âIt makes no difference. Jason wouldnât have dared tell me without your permission, would he?â
Kerwin couldnât help but glance at Betty.
Although Betty was not talkative, she figured it all in her heart.
Kerwin led Betty out of the kitchen. âJason is more eloquent than I am.â
It meant that Jason might be able to tell the story more clearly than he did.
âAs for the detailsâ¦â Kerwin hesitated and added, âI still canât tell you. And it will put you in danger. I hope youâll understand.â
Betty nodded. âI know youâre trying to protect me.â
Bettyâs tender words reassured Kerwin. And he could not help but squeeze her hands tighter.
Then, Betty blushed. When she was about to say something, she heard her cell phone ringing in the living room.
âWell, I have to take a call.â She lowered her head, pulled her hands back, and walked to the living room.
Betty picked up the phone on the coffee table and looked at the caller ID, which made her frown.
She said, deadpan, âEmily, why are you calling me?â
