Chapter 22

Cold Shower

Business Casual

SAM

Angel

You.

I peered at Evie’s confession, my heart pounding harder than it did when I lifted weights at the gym. I couldn’t fathom a woman this brilliant, sexy, and just plain perfect, craving more from me than just my wallet or a good fuck.

But that insecurity was probably just because of my past trauma with Carla.

Was I assuming too much? Did that one little word mean she wanted a relationship, or simply to keep having sex?

I wasn’t sure what to say. I kept deleting every message I typed. To be honest, I’d never foreseen the conversation taking this turn. I’d thought for sure Evie would get swept up in the fantasy of her ex-husband coming back and begging for forgiveness.

I’d been certain she was about to leave me behind—with a void in my heart from where she had started burrowing her way in.

I was sure that all my typing and deleting was showing Evie a stupid little bubble at the bottom of her screen, making me look like a moron.

Another message flew in, as if she was getting nervous about my lack of response.

Angel

That is, if you want me, too…

Of course I did. But I still didn’t understand what she meant. If I asked about labels, it would make me sound like a dumb teenager, so maybe if I defaulted to my usual sense of humor, she’d give me a hint.

Sam

Always.

I sent the single word before sending two more.

Sam

Phone sex?

Angel

You wish, Vázquez. Night.

Sam

It was worth a shot. Night, angel.

So, no hint. Just her usual teasing in return.

I turned off my phone and lay back against my royal-blue silk sheets. My eyes lingered on the clear, starry sky through my two broad-slanted, rectangular skylights, Evie dominating my every thought.

A fantasy emerged: Evie in nothing but a thong as I bent her over my desk. I studied those two little dimples on her lower back, and my hands traced her hourglass figure on their way to seize her hair, yanking her head back with each thrust inside her.

I nudged the flannel pants from my hips, took my needy cock in hand, and closed my eyes to enjoy each fabricated moment.

The next morning at the office began in its usual fashion: me, striding past my lovely secretary and pretending we were only coworkers, even though our eyes undressed one another in a not-so-business-casual way.

I closed my door and headed to my desk, only for the phone to ring the second I sat down. I picked up. “Vázquez.”

“Hello, Mr. Vázquez. I’m sorry to bother you. This is William Lowry. I was calling to inform you that there have been slight changes made in the contract for the merger, and I’m faxing a new copy for you to look over.”

I furrowed my brows. “What changes?”

“New stipulations requiring a twenty percent collection of your quarterly earnings.”

“Excuse me?” I was sure I sounded rude, which probably wasn’t the best for business, but that was double what we’d agreed to in the earlier contract.

I was already struggling with the company’s finances after Carla took half of everything, and it had been hell to keep up with basic building maintenance and keep my employees happy. An extra ten percent would break me.

“Will, what the hell? Do you know what twenty percent of this company is?”

“Listen, Sam, I understand that this may be a tough pill to swallow, but—”

“You’re damn right it is!” I scoffed. “That’s the Christmas bonuses I hand out to my employees every year. The daycare I provide for the working mothers here! You can’t seriously expect me to take that away from people.”

“I’m sorry, Sam, but it’s just business.”

My blood was boiling so rapidly that I barely noticed when Evie slipped through my door and sat in front of my desk. Apparently she’d overheard when I started yelling over the phone, but I couldn’t help it.

“Well, that’s just great, Will!”

Evie kept lowering her hands, warning me to calm down. However, right now, not even her presence could decrease my blood pressure.

“You know what’s not ‘just business?’ The parents here who work day and night to put food on their tables for their kids. How am I supposed to tell them they have to take a pay cut, all because of some no-good, dirty, rotten—”

Evie’s legs were suddenly wide open, her red dress hiked to her hips, her nude thong pulled aside. She started circling two cherry-red manicured fingers over the tiny pink bud of her clit.

My eyes widened, and I nearly dropped the phone as the useless chatter on the other end contorted into a jumbled mess I no longer cared to hear.

While letting out a breath and running my palm over my chin, I silently marveled at the sight of Evie playing with herself, her teeth claiming her lower lip as she gazed at me. She knew full well how naughty she was acting during work hours, and apparently she didn’t care.

Her two fingers periodically parted, allowing me to see her pussy in all its glory. My shaft throbbed; I needed to taste and touch her. She released a quiet moan as those fingers abruptly disappeared inside of her, making my cock ache with jealousy.

Both times we’d slept together, she’d required more stimulation than just simple penetration to push her over the edge. So I had to guess she was doing this just for me, putting on a show rather than trying to make herself cum in earnest.

“Samuel?” William asked, clearing his throat. “Are you there?”

“Yes. Um…” I sucked in a breath, failing to take my eyes off of Evie as she recovered her wet fingers, gliding them back up to her swelling folds. “Yes. I apologize.”

William sighed. “It’s just that with the tough times in the economy right now and—”

I lost track of what he was saying again; Evie’s jaw dropped, and her eyes watered as if she was actually enjoying what she was doing. I could see her glistening with wetness from all the way across the desk. Maybe she was getting off on having me as an audience.

Her free nails clawed at the armrest, and her head tipped toward the ceiling. A sequence of quiet gasps flew from her lungs, and her dazzling, glassy green eyes rolled away from mine. Her hips twitched with every orgasmic caress.

~Did she really just fucking cum in my office?~

“Send me the contracts and I’ll have a look at them ASAP,” I muttered to William.

“A—all right,” William stuttered. “Will do.”

As the other line clicked, I set the phone back down, finally able to process the not-so-cold shower I’d just witnessed.

I sighed, resting my elbows on my desk, examining Evie as she daintily pulled her dress back down to her knees.

“What the hell was that?” I growled.
