Chapter 461
Tangled By Fate
âWhat happened to you when you were gone for months?â
At Oviorâs question, Veronica simply opened her eyes and turned to look at him.
âNothing that you should be concerned about,â she calmly said.
Ovior fixed his glasses. âLook, itâs not that Iâm criticizing you. Iâm not saying I started hating you for hurting that guy. He deserved it.
âI want to know how the girl who even forgave her enemy cut off a manâs hands.â
âI just did it. Itâs not a big deal. You can tell Arthur about it. I donât mind. Itâs not like I wanted to hide anything from him anyway,â Veronica nonchalantly said.
âIâm sure Master wonât freak out,â Sebastian did his best to ease Veronica.
.....
âThatâs exactly when he will freak out,â Ovior muttered.
Sebastian: â...â
Veronica: â...â
An awkward silence fell in the room.
As if to save them from the awkwardness, the village head came to the room.
âI hope Iâm not bothering your rest,â he said.
Veronica got up and sat on the chair.
She answered, âNot at all. Are you feeling well enough to walk?â
The village head replied, âNever been better. Your wonderful power makes me feel young. Thank you, my lady. What can I do for you?â
Veronica raised an eyebrow. âWhat can you do for me? Nothing. Iâm not here to ask for a favor. I was here just to inspect. I didnât think Iâd get involved in your problem.
âBut I am curious to know what your next step will be. Are you going to bow down to the duke who is the sole reason for your sufferings or are you going to rebel?â
âRebel?â The village head shook. âMy lady, we donât have the luxury to rebel.â
Veronica crossed her arms. âFrom what I see, you donât have the luxury to follow his order.
âHow long do you think you can keep it up? A month? A year? In my opinion, you wonât last six months.â
The village head had a glum expression. âWhat can we do other than following orders?â
Veronica simply said, âRebel. Donât give in. You have to fight for your rights. What has the duke ever given you that you have to give him back?
âLife is about give and take. If the duke collects tax from you, he has to spend that money to develop your land. Did he do that?â
âThatâs not true,â the village head denied. âHe sent soldiers to protect our borders.â
Veronica furrowed her eyebrows.
âOther than sending some thugs to collect taxes, what else are they capable of? Raping and killing? Are you satisfied with it?â
The village head said, âWe have to get used to it eventually...â
Veronica chuckled. âI thought you were wiser than this. If you get used to it, your children and grandchildren wonât have a future here. This land will perish.
âHowever, if you rebel and become free from Duke De la Pole, your land will flourish and your family will have a future.
âThink about what I just said. Itâs your life, your family, your land. I have nothing to do with it.â
After speaking her mind, she signaled her companions to move out.
Sebastian walked behind her and asked in a low tone, âMistress, are you okay to leave?â
Veronica replied, âI want to go check other lands before going home. I canât let Duke De la Pole do whatever he pleases anymore.â
That night, they roamed around from one land to another land. They took care of the dukeâs henchmen and encouraged the people to rebel.
By the time they came home, it was dawn.
Veronica slept till noon and headed to the dining hall.
She wanted to have a peaceful brunch when she faced the interrogation.
âWell?â Zinnia looked at her curiously.
Veronica gulped. âIt has nothing to do with me. Trust me.â
âNo, we want to trust you but I donât believe people will rebel on their own. Someone must have encouraged them,â Felix said.
Veronica shrugged.
âI just happened to tell them that they will die at this rate. They need to do something if they want to survive. I guess they took my advice seriously.
Catherine was stunned when she heard it.
She said, âAnd you say itâs not your fault. You are 100% behind this rebellion.â
Veronica frowned. âDonât accuse me, Iâm innocent.â
Catherine shook her head.
âI had a feeling it was you. In the temple, you are the only rebellious child. Sister Josephine grew old because you worried her so much.â
Veronicaâs expression darkened.
âItâs not like I deliberately rebelled. I just wanted more fun. Whatâs wrong with that?â
âYou donât have to look for excuses. We know you are a troublemaker,â Catherine said.
Others laughed.
Later in the evening, Veronica was wiping her wet hair.
âWhat should I do next?â she wondered. âWhat will Duke De la Pole do now? Will he try to stop the rebels?â
She was pondering so hard that she didnât notice a figure teleporting into her bedroom.
She was about to put the towel on the hanger when she was embraced by a pair of strong arms.
She wanted to move away when a familiar scent engulfed her.
She smiled and hugged the arms back.
âYou scared me,â she whispered.
âYou are the one who scared me,â Arthur muttered in a low tone.
Veronica chuckled, amused by his accusation.
âHow did I scare you?â she asked.
She couldnât move her head since Arthurâs face was placed against hers.
âI heard what happened last night,â he told her.
âAnd? Are you mad at me?â Veronica inquired.
âNo, Iâm scared. Iâm so scared that I donât know what to do,â Arthur stated.
Truthfully, she was ready to face his anger. She had a feeling that he would order more bodyguards to guard her.
If that happened, she would challenge Arthur to a duel.
If she won, she would tell him that she no longer needed a bodyguard. If she lost, then she would agree to whatever he insisted.
However, what he said surprised her.
âWhat do you mean?â she asked, feeling curious. âWhy are you scared?â
