Chapter 458
Tangled By Fate
That day Albert came running to Duke De la Poleâs study.
âDuke...â he panted hard, âThe people are rebelling. They are on strike. They refused to pay the tax.â
âWhat did you say?!â Duke De la Pole slammed the table.
Albert gulped. âDuke... Iâve already passed the news to all the territories and told them to increase the tax.
âBut their leaders disapproved. They said that this year they couldnât grow enough crops. So...â
âSo, they canât pay more taxes?! Rubbish!â Duke De la Poleâs face turned red in anger.
Albert said, âThe current tax was already too much for them. The field expert said that the main reason the crops were hard to harvest this year was that they didnât have enough seeds to buy after paying taxes.â
.....
âNot enough seeds?â Duke De la Pole sneered. âThere was enough when my men went to collect taxes last season.â
âDuke, the people in the lands have to eat,â Albert reminded him.
âThatâs all excuses. I donât want to hear any excuses. If they refuse to pay, I just have to snatch what belongs to me.â
Duke De la Poleâs eyes glowed in fury.
âââ
âWas this your plan?â Darius looked at Veronica.
âWhat do you mean?â Veronica feigned ignorance.
âThe rebels,â Darius mentioned.
âWhat are you saying? What could I have done? It was the Duke who pushed his people to the edge and they had no other choice other than to rebel. They have to survive.â
Veronicaâs logic was on point. Darius couldnât say anything.
Zinnia put down her glass and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.
âVeronica, I came home late the night before yesterday,â she said.
Veronica looked at her. âAnd?â
âI went to talk to Ovior but he wasnât at his office.â Zinniaâs blue eyes were fixed on her.
Veronica said, âHe could be in his room...
âBut he wasnât there either,â Zinnia finished her sentence. âThen, as usual, I went to guard you in your room but you werenât present. Both of you were just gone.
âThen, I saw you in the morning. You had dark circles under your eyes. I know you werenât cheating on Arthur with Ovior. There must be something else.â
â...â
Felix, Darius and Catherine looked at Veronica.
âAhem!â Veronica cleared her throat.
The day before yesterday, Sebastian came to Veronica with urgent news.
âAre you saying that Duke De la Pole wants to raise the tax because he needs money for the next business?â Veronica stared at him.
Sebastian replied, âYes, the people in his lands are already suffering. If the tax increases this time, they will starve to death.â
Veronica creased her eyebrows.
âThis is bad. My greed to punish the Duke is hurting innocent people. Why didnât I see this outcome?â she lamented.
She was in deep thought.
The guilt ate her as she felt bad for the people who were barely alive after paying high taxes.
She was mortified thinking of the future scenario.
She looked at Sebastian and asked, âDo you have any financial records of Duke De la Poleâs lands?â
âI donât.â Sebastian remembered something and then shared, âSecond Master Ovior has a hobby of collecting those records of many lands. If you want, I can ask him.â
âNo, Iâll go talk to him. Thank you for notifying me.â
Afterward, Veronica went to Oviorâs office.
He was working there alone. Catherine wasnât present.
As soon as he saw Veronica he said, âWhat are you here for? I thought you were busy working.â
âOvior, I heard something terrible. Itâs all my fault...â Veronica told him what she found out.
Ovior didnât change his expression. âItâs nothing new. He had done it before when his son was born and also after he went to school. His excuse was that his son needed the best education and the best life in the empire.â
âYou knew this would happen?!â Veronica stared at him in disbelief.
Ovior had nothing to hide.
âYes, as a matter of fact, I also knew what kind of reaction you would have after learning the truth. Thatâs why I didnât tell you anything. Or else, you wouldnât want to destroy the ships.â
Veronica felt weak on her knees. She sat on the couch and covered her face.
She muttered, âThis is all my fault. Innocent people are suffering because of me.â
âDo you wish to help them?â Ovior asked while working on some papers.
Veronica lifted her head. âHow can I help them? I want to do everything I can to amend.â
âIf you help them, you will indirectly help Duke De la Pole,â Ovior reminded her.
Veronica said, âI donât care. I have to do something for them.â
âFine, after lunch, we will check out some territories which belong to Duke De la Pole,â Ovior responded with his usual poker face. âYou can inspect the areas at first and understand their problems and needs before taking any action.â
Veronicaâs eyes lit up. âThank you, Ovior!â
As he promised, after Veronica, Sebastian and Ironin gathered around at Oviorâs office, he teleported them to the worst territory the duke owned.
Veronica scanned the desolate area and shuddered.
People were lying here and there. They were so thin that the curves of their bones were shown through their skin.
âItâs like famine struck them,â she muttered. âIâve seen worse but this is just the worst. How is Duke De la Pole managing his territory?â
âWho said he managed anything?â Ovior scoffed. âAll his henchmen did his job. Duke De la Pole is too busy sucking the Queen.â
âHow can they be treated so terribly? Arenât they paying five hundred gold coins per season? How can they do that?â Veronica was confused.
âEven if Mistress wants to blame herself, you mustnât because itâs not your fault,â Sebastian told her. âThey have been treated badly for years since Duke De la Pole got his title.â
While the group was marching forward, a little boy around five years old rushed forward.
âWater... water please...â he begged with thirst in his eyes.
Veronicaâs heart twisted in pain for the child. Without a second thought, she offered her water pouch to him.
âYou can have it,â she said.
The child was stunned at first, he thought he was going to be kicked by the ferocious men around the woman.
He snatched the water pouch from Veronica and ran away.
âLet me take you to another territory,â Ovior said.
After that, he teleported the whole group to another area.
Looking at the situation in the next territory, Veronica was shocked.
