Chapter 401
Tangled By Fate
The child who caused the entire accident didnât seem to be affected by the blood of innocent horses.
He hummed a piece of music and headed to a narrow alley when no one noticed him. The alley was rather quiet and no one spotted him.
He whistled and waited for someone.
Some time later, a person came to meet.
âI did what you wanted me to do. Now give me the money,â the boy stated.
âBut you couldnât harm her.â The person was unsatisfied.
The boy shrugged at his employerâs complaint.
.....
âHey, itâs not my problem. She almost died but the guy in the black cloth came to rescue her. How would I know she had a bodyguard? You said she was a commoner. Why would a commoner wear a fancy dress and have a bodyguard?â
âIâm also not sure why she has a bodyguard.â The person clenched his fist.
The person threw a pouch at the boy. The boy delightfully jerked the pouch. He heard clang noises of coins clashing. Without another word, the boy went away, humming the same music.
The person didnât bother to look at the boy. Her blue eyes were fixed on Catherine, Vincent, Veronica and Arthur.
âI wonât forgive you. Because of your false statement, my child couldnât live in the tower. Do you think you can come in between me and Arthur? I will show how it feels to take away someone you love.â
No one noticed that a pair of bloodthirsty eyes glared at them from a distance.
ââ-
âWe should have caught the child and then interrogated him,â Arthur stated.
He was in the same carriage with Veronica and Catherine. They were heading back to the tower.
âThis is just a child. Although accidents like that donât happen often, we should let him go,â Veronica shared her opinion.
âBut I sensed someoneâs murderous gaze,â Arthur thought. âWho was it? That bloody queenâs men? Iâll tear them apart when I find them.â
âI think Iâve messed up,â Catherine mumbled.
Veronica asked, âHuh? What do you mean? What happened?â
âI messed up a big-time,â Catherine repeated the same sentence. She clenched her hair and pulled them.
âCathy, what are you doing? You will become bald like Darius if you keep pulling your hair.â Veronica prevented her from pulling hair. âWhatâs wrong? Share with me?â
â...I canât...â Catherine shook her head.
Veronica looked at her husband.
Arthur understood her gaze. âDo you want some privacy? Fine then. Iâll be close by.â He disappeared from the carriage. He teleported outside.
Veronica said, âHe is gone now. Tell me whatâs wrong.â
âWhen I was in danger... I was thinking about Sebastian.â Catherine looked at Veronica and desperately said, âCan you believe it? I didnât think of Vincent but Sebastian!â
Veronica halted, not sure what to say. âWhy... why do you think about him but not your fiance?â
âI donât know.â Catherine shook her head and sobbed. âI love Vincent. I really do. But Iâm not sure when Iâm in danger, I keep thinking about Sebastian.â
Now that she had a clear mind, she thought about how Sebastian hugged her close to his chest.
His heart was beating fast. He had a worried look on his face.
âIsnât it because whenever you are in danger, itâs always Sebastian who comes to rescue you?â Veronica calmly stated.
Catherineâs heart skipped a beat. Her eyes widened as she realized it.
âYou... you donât mean...â she didnât want to think about the impossible.
âYou love him, Cathy,â Veronica disclosed what her best friend was fearing the most.
âDonât say it!â Catherine exclaimed.
âI hate to say this, Cathy. You love both of them.â
âHow is this possible? Iâm getting engaged to Vincent. I dated him. I had nothing for Sebastian. How can I fall for...?â Tears streamed down Catherineâs face. âAm I a slut now?â
âI know itâs hard to explain. You just fell for him without realizing it. It must be confusing but thatâs the truth.â
Veronica placed a hand on her shoulder, feeling bad for her friend who was about to knot her tie with someone.
âWhat should I do, Ver? Will I be happy if I marry Vincent knowing I like Sebastian?â Catherine sought advice.
âI really wanted her to come up with the solution herself,â Veronica thought.
However, she had no other option. Her friend wanted to know her opinion and she could only help her with words.
âI wish I could tell you to choose both of them. But it might make you more upset. I know you want a peaceful life. If living with Vincent makes you think about Sebastian all the time, Vincent may not be a perfect choice for you.â
âVer!â Catherine exclaimed. Her hands grabbed Veronicaâs arm.
âCathy, I can only advise you to choose a man that wonât make you regret. You will never be happy if you marry someone but think about another man day and night,â Veronica told her.
Catherine clenched her skirt. âI love Vincent. I can overcome anything after marriage.â
Veronica stated, âCathy, love isnât enough for married life. If you want to get married, you need to understand each other, support each other, accept each otherâs shortcomings and faults, and need to sacrifice and compromise. You have to face the problems together too.â
Catherine cupped her head. Her head was unable to think further.
â...I donât know what to do anymore. I met Vincentâs family. We fixed our date, checked out the venue and ordered dresses. I cannot back down now. Itâs impossible.â
Veronica hugged her. âCathy, itâs better to cancel the wedding than get married and suffer in the long run. Your happiness and satisfaction come first; not what others think about you.â
Catherine couldnât take her advice into consideration.
âBut how can I turn him down? We were both so happy when I said âyesâ. He supported me and went against his parentsâ wishes for my sake when I told him I have to work. He did everything he could and he accepted me for who I am.â
Veronica could understand her complicated feelings. She asked her, âThen what do you plan to do about your feelings for Sebastian?â
