Chapter 386
Tangled By Fate
âBut itâs not like it happens all the time. Love comes to us in different shapes. Letâs just say there is a couple who keep bickering day and night. But when real danger approaches, they forget about their own safety and try to save each other.â
At Veronicaâs words, Catherine tilted her head on the side. âHuh? Why do I think it sounds so familiar?â
Veronica didnât give her the time to think deeply about it. She changed the subject. âYou went out today. Did you talk to Vincentâs parents?â
Catherine confirmed, âYes, I did.â
Curious, Veronica asked her, âWhat did they say?â
Catherine thought about the morning and was depressed. âThey were upset about my job. They wanted a full-time housewife.â
âWhat did you reply?â
.....
âI told them that I signed a contract. I have to work twenty years under the Imperial Palace. If I breach the contract, I will have to pay tons.â
âThatâs a nice move. What did they say in return?â
âNothing. But I think I made Vincentâs mother upset. Iâm so scared now. Itâs a good thing that Vincentâs father approved of us. But Iâm worried about what will happen in the future.â
Catherine was distressed thinking about her future.
âI donât want to suffer. Iâve heard mothers-in-law are the hardest to please. She is upset before I married her son. What is waiting for me later on?â
âThank goodness that it was approved. Now nothing can stop you guys to get married. Congratulations! Iâm really happy for you!â Veronicaâs wish didnât make Catherine the slightest happy.
Veronica couldnât understand her friendâs concern. âAre you worried that what might happen after marriage?â
âOf course. I would hate to see her face as black as the back of the pot every time I come to the tower. If she needs a servant to take care of household chores, she should hire one. Itâs not like they donât have enough money not to spend for a maid.â
âWhat about your money?â
âI will only spend money for my children. They will be my only direct family. But Iâll make sure Vincent spends money as well.â
Catherine was very clear about where to expend something and where not to.
âI have a feeling you learned it from Ovior,â Veronica remarked.
Catherine had no reason to hide from her. She replied, âYes, he told me not to spend too much money on men or their family members. They would take it for granted and treat me like trash.â
âI do love that about Ovior. He is so wise. Itâs like he is never wrong,â Veronica commented. âAnyway, they have approved your marriage. When will you hold the engagement?â
âNext month.â
Veronica jumped out of the chair. âThatâs so early! We have to do lots of shopping! What about the venue? What about the dinner menu? Did you guys think about it?â
Seeing her friend so excited, Catherine became cheerful as well.
She responded with a shy smile, âWe havenât planned anything. We donât have time besides weekends.â
âThat means you have four days only! That canât be done. Just plan how you want engagement. Iâll take care of the rest. Iâll go out with Zinnia and Darius and buy whatever is needed for the party. Then, we will think about the wedding ceremony. Oh! We need to hire a priest as well.â
Veronica started to make a list in her mind.
Catherine hurriedly interrupted her, âVer, hold on. You canât just make plans all alone. Your head will fry. Then, you will become the second Ovior.â
âOh, you are right. Letâs tell everyone the good news. We need everyoneâs cooperation.â Veronica grabbed her hand and pulled her inside the tower.
After returning to Oviorâs room, they only found Ovior and Felix.
Veronica bowed and apologized for her earlier behavior, âOvior, Iâm sorry I gave you a hard time. I know you donât enjoy hurting people. It must be hard on you and everyone in the tower. Iâll do my best to become a Mistress who can support countless people.â
Ovior was taken aback by the fact that she changed her point of view so easily. Although he didnât show it, he was touched.
â...Itâs nothing,â he muttered.
Felix smiled at Veronica and told her, âIâm glad that you understand our sacrifice and hard work. To tell the truth, we donât enjoy killing innocent children as well. They haunt us down every time we try to sleep.
âThere is nothing enjoyable about killing people. Even so, we do all that for the rest of the people who we swore to protect.â
âIâm really sorry.â Veronica hung her head.
âItâs all right. We donât mind it since many people do the same. Now, we got so used to it. At least, you didnât call us monsters. Thatâs a huge relief. Since we donât mind, donât worry about it anymore. You understand our work now, donât you?â
Veronica vigorously moved her head.
Felix patted her head. âThen itâs more than I can appreciate.â
After that, he looked at Catherine and changed the subject. âDidnât you go out with your boyfriend? Did you bring any good news? The chef sent us some pastry cakes. We sent it to Arthurâs office since everyone is there.â
âOh, that...â Catherine turned red while disclosing the news, âI was proposed. Vincent and I are going to hold our engagement ceremony next week.â
âThatâs great! Congrats!â Felix grabbed her hands and shook them.
Catherine bashfully smiled. She hid her worries from them and suggested, âWhy donât we all head to Arthurâs office? We can eat the pastries there.ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âSure! Letâs go!â Felix agreed.
Three of them looked at Ovior, waiting for his approval. âWhat are you waiting for?â he asked them. âGo ahead. Iâm not going.â
âYou need to or else we will drag you there.â Catherine began to roll her sleeves, clearly threatening him.
Ovior dropped his pen. âSuch troublemakers.â
Meanwhile, Arthur was sitting on his chair, feeling anxious at every second. After a while, he couldnât take this anymore. He stood up.
âMaybe I should check on her. Why are they taking so much time?â
