:Believe Me, I'm Lying: 25
Believe Me, I'm Lying
My vision abruptly went black when a warm pair of hands covered my eyes, causing me to go blind. I started, sucking in a breath of surprise. Someone let out a low chuckle from behind me. âGuess who?â
Immediately I recognized his voice. âArden?â
âBingo.â
I paused for a moment, waiting for Arden to pull his hands away from my face. When he didnât, I frowned. âAre you going to remove your hands?â
âWhen I do, donât look until I tell you to,â he responded, pulling his hands away.
âWhy?
âJust because.â
Bemused, I did as he commanded, keeping my eyes shut. Arden was humming to himself as he proceeded to do whatever he had planned. After a few moments of silence, the sound of something being placed on my desk broke it.
âOkay, done,â Arden told me. âOpen your eyes and look down.â
My eyes snapped open and my gaze dropped to my desk. Lying on top of my planner was a small black box. Arden was grinning at me when I turned back to him, furrowing my eyebrows. âWhat is it?â
âOpen it,â he told me excitedly. âItâs a gift!â
âA gift?â I echoed in surprise, picking up the small box. âWhy?â
Arden waved his hand. âDonât worry about it. Just think of it as an early Christmas presentâ or are you Jewish?â
âIâm not Jewish,â I told him, still holding the closed black box. My fingers drummed on the outside nervously. Why did Arden get me a gift?
âOpen it!â Arden repeated urgently. âCome on!â
I smiled at his eagerness. âOkay, okay. You do realize itâs weird buying a present for your teacher, right?â
âWhatever. This is a present between friends. Not pupil and teacher.â
When I took off the cover of the box, my eyes widened in surprise. Inside was a silver necklace with a pendant made out of what I assumed to be Emeraldâ although I hoped it was some knock-off gem. My gaze returned to Arden, who was still grinning like the Cheshire cat.
âYou got me a necklace?â I stated in disbelief. âArden, whyââ
Arden cut me off. âI didnât buy it.â
âDid you steal it?â
Arden pursed his lips at me. âNo. I donât steal things. That was my grandmaâs.â
My mouth dropped open. Immediately I dropped the necklace back into the box and pushed it towards Arden. âI canât take it.â
He firmly put his hand on mine, pushing it back. âYes, you can. And you are. Harley, do I look like the type to wear such a girly necklace?â
âThis is your grandmaâs!â I argued, straightening my arm. âIâm not taking it!â
âJust take it!â
âNo!â
âItâs rude not to accept a gift!â
âBut itâs your grandmaâsââ
Arden gave me a hard look. âHarley, I want you to have it. Please. My mom doesnât deserve it and Iâm afraid Iâll lose it.â
I gave him a helpless look. âBut Ardenâ¦â
âItâs just a gift, Harley,â Arden said in exasperation. âItâs not like Iâm asking you to marry me. Think of it as⦠proof of our friendship?â He raised an eyebrow.
I couldnât help a smile from slipping onto my face. âProof of our friendship, huh?â
âYep,â Arden responded with a grin. âNow you have no choice to take it.â
âGuess so.â
Arden scooped the black box from my hand, pouring the necklace into his palm. He came back around the desk and stood behind me. âMove your hair,â he ordered.
I quickly pulled my hair up and Arden brought the necklace around my neck, clasping it in the back. My hair fell back around my shoulder and I looked down to see the bright green gem lying on my chest. âItâs such a pretty color.â
âItâs the color of your eyes,â Arden informed me, moving back to the other side of my desk again. âThatâs why gave me the idea to give this to you.â
âMy eyes definitely donât look like this.â
âYes they do.â
I shook my head. âNot-uh.â
âHarley, we promised not to lie to each other,â Arden stated, letting out a sigh.
My heart skipped a beat and I stared at Arden in shock. How did he figure out I was lying to him? My mind raced, thinking of excuses. Would he be okay with the fact that I couldnât tell him because people couldnât know my true age?
âSo to keep that promise, I wouldnât lie about your eye color,â Arden continued, rolling his eyes at me. âThey really are that pretty.â
I blinked. So that whatâs he meant. A breathy chuckle escaped my lips as my heart calmed down. âWhatever you say, Arden.â
He beamed at me, taking a seat on the edge of the desk. Guilt washed over me again as I watched his amiable expression. How could I lie to him? He was so honest with meâ so honest it didnât seem believable, and yet it was. And now he was giving his late grandmaâs necklace to me⦠I didnât deserve it. Arden deserved to know the truth. I pushed myself away from my desk, abruptly standing up. Arden looked at me in surprise.
âWhatâs up?â he asked.
âStay here,â I ordered. âIâll be right back. I have to talk to my uncle.â
Arden gave me a confused look, but before he could ask anything I was already halfway out the door. The hallways echoed with my hurried footsteps as I hastened towards the principalâs office. To my luck, no one besides my uncle was in there when I entered. He looked up at me curiously as marched up to his desk.
âI want to tell Arden Iâm seventeen,â I told him breathlessly.
âNo.â
I blanked at my uncleâs quick response. âWhat?â
My uncle shook his head, letting out a sigh. âHarley, what did I tell you at the beginning of the year? You canât let anyone find out your ageââ
âBut Oliver knows!â
âHe found out by accident,â my uncle reminded me. âHe wasnât supposed to know.â
I frowned at him. âArden would keep it a secret.â
âIt doesnât matter. You canât tell anyone, Harley. If he ends up telling everyone youâd have to be fired.â
âIâm trying to tell you he wonât tell anyone!â
âYou donât know that for sure.â
âOliver hasnât told anyone,â I challenged. âAnd heâs more likely to than Arden.â
My uncle gave me an impatient look. âLook, Oliverâs a different story. Iâm not saying I donât trust Arden, but I canât afford to let you tell anyone else.â
âBut Uncle Robââ
âHarley,â he interjected in a firm tone. âI donât know why you want to tell him so suddenly, but I canât let you. You need this job. And I need you to have this job.â
I crossed my arms and pursed my lips at him. âFine.â
âIf I find out he knows, youâre going to be in trouble,â he warned me, giving me a wary expression. âIâm serious, Harley.â
âI heard you fine.â
My uncle sighed. âIâm sorry Harley. But itâs the way it has to be.â
âI know,â I responded, my shoulders sagging. I couldnât afford to lose my job.
âIâm curious though, why do you want to tell him?â My uncle smirked. âDo you have a crush?â
Immediately I felt my face burn. âWhat? Thatâs not evenâ I donât evenâ no!â
My uncle laughed. âJust teasing you, Harley.â
âHa.â I sent him a hard look. âIâm going back to my classroom.â
He rolled his eyes at me. âOkay. Donât tell him, Harley.â
âI wonât,â I snapped, twisting on my heel. âThough if anything happens, itâs your fault.â
âAnything happens?â my uncle echoed in a confused tone. âWhat do you mean?â
Ignoring him, I marched out of the principalâs office. I couldnât not tell Ardenâ he trusted me. But getting fired was definitely something I couldnât afford to do. This job paid more than any other one Iâve ever had. Arden would understand why I couldnât tell him, wouldnât he? A sigh escaped my lips as I trudged down the hallway to my classroom.
Arden was at my desk when I entered, the back of my chair to me. He slowly swiveled it around, a disturbing smile on his face, and a small glass of water in his hand. âGood evening, inspector,â he greeted in a fake Russian-French accent.
âMr. Lector,â I responded, dipping my head in greeting. âYou do know that partâs only in the trailer, right?â
Arden shrugged. âItâs got a nice ring to it. Whereâd you go?â
âUm, to talk to my uncle about something,â I told him, shrugging. âWant to help me set up for next period?â
âSure,â Arden responded with a grin, pushing his body out of my chair. âIâm here to help!â
The rest of the day passed in a blur. When seventh period came, I was thrown off guardâ Oliver hadnât shown up for sixth period, so I had forgotten to set up. Zak was the first person to enter the room, quickly followed by a loud group of boys. Zak grinned at me, almost skipping to my desk.
âHey, Ms. Allen!â
âHi, Zak,â I responded, smiling back at him. âWhatâs up?â
Zak shook some of his hair out of his face. âThereâs no school on Monday,â he informed me, âso I was wondering if you wanted to go someone and do something? Tucker might come along too.â
I raised an eyebrow. âTucker too?â
âI plan on inviting him,â Zak responded with a shrug. âYou told us to get along, and we used to be friends⦠so why not?â
âNo, no! Thatâs good! What day is Monday?â
âDecember second.â
For a moment time froze, my heart stopping. It felt like ice water had washed over me. âDecember⦠second?â I repeated quietly.
Zak nodded. âYep.â
My mouth went dry. December second? It was already December? How could time have passed so quickly? How had this date sprung up so suddenly? My vision blurred for a moment as it hit me. December second would make the one-year anniversary of my parentsâ deathâ¦
âSo, do you want to do something?â Zak prodded, hovering over me. âI promise it will be fun.â
I licked my lips, trying to moisten them. âUm⦠Iâ¦â I hesitated for a moment. Would it be better for me to be alone? Or would it help to be with other people to take my mind off it? No, it wasnât good to be alone. âSure. Sounds great.â
âWhat sounds great?â Arden peered over Zakâs shoulder at me. âSome cake we are making today?â
âNo, Zak wants to⦠Hey Arden, do you want to hang out with me and Zak on Monday?â
Zakâs eyes widened in surprise at me. âWhaââ
âTuckerâs coming too,â I interjected, sending Zak a warning look. âI think itâd be fun for all of us to get together.â
âMs. Allenââ
âThat sounds like fun,â Arden agreed, although he looked a little confused. âKind of like old times, huh?â He patted Zak on the shoulder.
Zak flinched under Ardenâs touch. âJust like old times,â he finally muttered, giving me a grumpy look.
I rolled my eyes at him. âCome on. I need to have fun on Mondayââ
Suddenly there was a loud shout from the doorway. My eyes snapped towards it and landed on Joey and Joel in an intense shoving match just outside it. Joey grabbed the frame, trying to pull himself in the classroom while Joel yanked him back.
âI beat you fair and square! Let go!â Joey demanded, clinging onto the doorframe as if his life depended on it.
Joel scowled at his twin. âYou used dirty tricks!â
âAllâs fair in racing!â
âNo itâs not!â
âYes it is! Now move!â
âNo!â
Joey aimed an elbow at Joelâs face, but Joel quickly blocked it with his free hand. Getting up from my desk, I hurried over to break the two of them up. âYou guys! No hitting each other!â
Joey and Joel both paused for a moment to stare at me. Then Joey smirked. âYou tell us what to do, we might just have to⦠kill you.â
Joel snickered while I flushed.
âVery funny,â I snapped, reaching forwards and grabbing Joelâs arms. âLet go of your brother.â
As soon as I pulled Joelâs arm off Joey, Joey fell forwards, knocking into me, and knocking me off my feet. We hit the ground hard, my head ricocheting off the hard, wooden floor. A low groan came from Joey, who had done a face plant, half on top of me, half off. Joel snickered from above us.
âSmooth move, teach,â he commented, stepping over us.
I winced, staring up at the ceiling while my head throbbed in pain. A sharp pain ran threw my right hand, making me cry out in pain. Seconds later Oliver appeared in my vision, looking surprised. He looked down and his eyes widened before he stepped back.
âOw,â I complained, quickly yanking my hand away. âYou stepped on my hand!â
Oliver gave me a flat look. âDonât just leave it lying on the floor like that then. Joey, what are you doing? Get off her.â Oliver kicked Joey in the side. âYouâre both going to get in trouble if youâre caught like that.â
âI fell,â Joey explained, pushing himself off me, and onto his feet. âBy accident.â
Five hands suddenly entered my vision. Confused, I looked further up to see Arden, Zak, Joel, Joey, and Oliver all holding a hand out to me. My eyes widened slightly as I took the site in. Just two months ago, these five boys were throwing eggs at me. Now they all wanted to help me off the ground? A smile spread across my face as I grinned at the boys.
Oliver suddenly pulled his hand back, stepping over me, and heading to his seat. Arden glanced after Oliver with a frown, pulling his hand back as well. I reached my hand up and Zak, Joey, and Joel all grabbed it, pulling me to my feet in one swift motion.
âThank you.â I stretched, trying to get the ache out of my back. Gently, I touched the back of my head to inspect the damage. A small bump had formed, and it panged when I touched it. âOw.â
Zak chuckled. âAre you okay?â
The bell rang as I nodded. Seconds later Luke rushed in, his black hair covering most of his face. He knocked into me, his eyes widening in surprise. I stumbled back a step, flinging my hands out to steady myself.
âSorry Iâm late,â he apologized, reaching his hands out to steady me.
âTake a seat,â I ordered, letting a sigh out. âBefore I end up dead.â
Luke shuffled to his seat, and Joel, Joey, and Zak followed suit. I made my way back to my desk, frowning slightly. Since I didnât prepare anything for the class, I was going to have to let them have a study hall⦠And to me, that sounded dangerous.
Greg thrust his hand up into the air. âMs. Allen? The soccer team has to leave. Weâre supposed to just check in then head out.â
âOh, um, okay,â I responded, pulling out my attendance sheet. âSo who needs to leave?â Six hands shot up in the air. I stared at the six boys in surprise. âAll of you are leaving?â
Luke nodded. âYep. Todayâs the big game.â
âWell good luck,â I responded, checking off David, Mason, Aaron, Jake, Tyler, and Luke.
âThanks,â the group chorused, slinging their backpacks over their shoulder, then heading out the door.
I stared at the remaining six students. Oliver was glaring at his desktop, Arden was texting on his cell phone, Zak was grinning up at me, Joey was throwing paper balls at Joel, Joel was dodging Joey, and Tucker was staring at me with a frown. I half-smiled back at him.
âSo,â I started, drumming my fingers on my desk. âI forgot to prepare last period, so thereâs nothing to do today. You can use this period as a study hall.â
âSeriously?â Joey and Joel said simultaneously.
âSeriously.â
âCan I go to the library then?â Joel asked, looking excited. âIâll start on my English essay.â
Joey shot his brother a glare. âI want to go to the library.â
âI asked first.â
âI thought it first!â
âYou can both go,â I interjected, trying not to grin at them. âBut if you two get kicked out, donât blame me.â
Joey grinned. âWe wonât get kicked out.â
âAt least I wonât,â Joel added, grabbing his backpack off the floor. âSee you Tuesday, Ms. Allen.â
âBye guys,â I responded, waving as they left. Now I was left with Tucker, Oliver, Zak, and Arden. âWhat are you guys going to do?â
âIâm going to stay here,â Arden informed me, relaxing back into his seat.
Zak nodded. âMe too.â
Tucker nodded in agreement when I turned my eyes to him. When I glanced at Oliver, I found him glaring at me. I blinked in surprise, taken aback. He softened his look and quickly turned away from me. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
âOliver, can I talk to you in the hall for a second?â I requested.
Oliver didnât reply, but he stood up and started towards the door. After giving the other three boys a one-minute finger, I followed after him. He leant on the wall next to the door, crossing his arms again.
âWhere were you last period?â I asked curiously.
âI had to finish a math test,â he explained.
âAre you feeling okay?â
Oliverâs expression hardened. âIâm fine.â
I frowned. âAre you sure?â
âI said Iâm fine.â
âOkay, okay,â I responded, holding up my hands. âI was just making sureâ¦â
Oliver clenched his jaw. âThanks.â
âOliver, do you want to hang out on Monday?â I blurted. âTucker, Zak, and Arden are coming too.â
Oliverâs eyes widened and he stared down at me in surprise. I blushed, scratching the back of my head. What was I doing? Oliver and Arden wouldnât get along. But it seemed sort of rude to have his three old friends together without him.
âNo.â
âWhat? Why not?â
âI donât like Arden,â Oliver told me in a hard tone. âThereâs nothing more to it.â
âWhy donât you like him?â I demanded, frowning at him. âYou said yourself heâs a good guy. What did he do to you?â
He glared at me. âHe didnât do anything.â
âThen why arenât you friends anymore?â
âPeople change, Harley.â
âSome for the worst, huh?â
Oliver gave me a flat look. âGuess so.â
Immediately I felt guilty. My shoulders sagged and I let out a quiet sigh. âIâm sorry, Oliver. I didnât mean that.â
âWhatever.â
âElliotâs coming,â I told him desperately. âHeâll want you to come. And Iâll need someone to help me look after him. The other three donât really know him.â
His gaze met mine again, and I saw them soften slightly. âIf I donât go, you might forget Elliotâs there. Zak can be distracting sometimes.â
A smile began to grow on my face. âSo that means youâll go?â
âOnly because Iâm worried about Elliot,â Oliver muttered, turning away from me again. âAnd only because of that.â
I grinned at him. Whatever he said, I was glad he was going. Having the four of them together was definitely something I needed. There was no doubt that they would keep my mind of my parentsâ deaths. âWant to bake some cookies for us then?â I asked, nudging his side with my elbow.
âNo,â he growled, gently pushing me away from him. âIâm going back in.â
I followed Oliver as he went back into the classroom. Tucker, Arden, and Zak had five desks pushed together and were setting up some sort of board game. Ardenâs attention turned to me and he grinned, gesturing for me to go to him.
âWeâre playing Scattergories,â he informed me. âWant to play with us?â
âWhere did you find that?â
Zak turned to smirk at me. âSecret.â
I laughed. It didnât really matter where the found the board game. It was something we could all do together. âAlright, Iâll play. Oliver?â
He snorted. âNo.â
âCome on, Oliver, itâs funner with more people,â Arden protested, turning to frown at his ex-best friend.
Oliver pursed his lips at him. âFunner isnât a word.â
âIt is in my dictionary.â
âIs stupid not included in it?â
I sent him a glare. âOliver.â
Oliver sighed, coming over to the group of desks. âFine. But just this once.â
Tucker gave Oliver a wary look before turning to me. I cocked my head to the side, grinning widely.
âLet the games begin!â Zak announced, pulling out the cards. âWeâll start with list two. The letter is Sâ¦.â
