:Believe Me, I'm Lying: 24
Believe Me, I'm Lying
âHarley! Psst! Harley!â
I paused, trying to figure out if I was imagining my name being called or not. When nothing else came, I resumed in my table wiping, leaning across the table so I could reach the other side.
âHarley!â
This time I quickly snapped my head towards the source of the sound, catching the silhouette of a person disappearing into the hall that led to the employee lounge. I glanced around the room, locating Oliver at the cash register. My eyebrows pulled together in confusion.
âHarley!â
Throwing my rag down on the table, I turned, and began to walk cautiously towards the hallway. I slowly looked around the corner. No one was there. I frowned, wondering if I was imagining things. Suddenly Anthony appeared in my vision, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. My heart skipped a beat and I took a step backwards in surprise.
âBoo,â he said, grinning.
I let out a slow breath, trying to calm my heart. âHow did you do that?â
âSecret,â he responded with a wink. âDo you want to take a break?â
âNow?â
Anthony nodded. âYeah. Why donât you and Oliver go get something to eat together?â
âI donât really need a break,â I told Anthony. âWiping tables isnât that hard.â
He shook his head. âThatâs not why Iâm giving you a break.â
I gave him a confused look. âI donât know what you mean.â
âYouâve been walking around looking depressed since you got here,â Anthony pointed out. âIâve never seen you in such low spirits.â
âIâm not depressedââ
âYouâre clearly upset about something.â
I shook my head. âIâm just⦠tired.â
Anthony frowned. âLying is a bad habit, Harley.â
âI know,â I whispered, dropping my gaze. If anyone knew that, it was definitely me.
âCome on,â Anthony ordered, grabbing my upper arm and dragging me towards the cash register. âYouâre going to go eat.â
âIâd rather clean,â I protested, trying to pull free from his grasp. âItâs really nothingââ
âOliver!â Anthony called, waving at his son. âOliver, take a break.â
Oliver turned to scowl at us. âIâll take my break when I want my break.â
âThen you can take another one later, but youâre taking one now.â
Oliver looked thrown off guard. âWhat?â
âTake Harley out to eat,â Anthony suggested, giving my back a forceful slap. âBefore her gloom seeps into our customers.â
âIâm fine,â I stated forcefully, giving Anthony a meaningful look.
âOliver.â
Oliver shrugged, ducking under the counter. âIâm not going to refuse a paid break.â
âI never said it was paidââ
âLetâs go, Harley,â Oliver ordered, putting a hand on my shoulder, and steering me away from Anthony. âSee you later, old man.â
âIâm not old!â
Oliver continued to push me until we arrived at the exit. I watched as he discarded his apron, tossing it onto one of the benches that lined the front waiting area. After a moment I quickly took mine off too, throwing it on top of Oliverâs.
âWhere do you want to go?â Oliver asked as we left the bar.
I shrugged. âYou choose.â
âSure. Letâs go to the Chinese place down the street. My mom used to take me there a lot,â he explained, gesturing with his head for me to follow him. âItâs good.â
âOkay.â
Oliver turned his head, giving me a flat look. âWhatâs wrong with you?â
âThereâs nothing wrong with me,â I snapped. âIâm fine.â
âNo, because youâre not as annoying as you usually are.â
Oliver thought I was annoying? I smiled wryly. âGee, Iâm sorry for not bothering you.â
He rolled his eyes. âThis might be a shot in the dark, but Iâm going to guess that youâre upset over something that has to do with Arden.â
âIâm not upset! Why does everyone think Iâm upset? Iâm fine!â
âYouâre a little liar.â
I glared at Oliver for a moment, caught between annoyance and pain. Did everyone have to point out how much of a liar I was? I got it already. Without responding, I hurried down the street, trying to leave Oliver behind. He chuckled from behind me, and I heard his paste quicken to match mine.
âTouching a nerve, am I?â
âGo away, Oliver.â
âYou shouldnât feel bad about lying to Arden,â he told me. âHe lies all the time.â
I quickly glanced over my shoulder at Oliver, narrowing my eyes at him. âMaybe Arden used to lie, but he wouldnât lie to me. I trust him.â
âSo I take it he trusts you too?â
Clenching my jaw, I ignored Oliver. He purposely bumped his shoulder against mine. âIf you worried about what he will say if he kinds out your true age, donât bother.â
âWhy not?â I asked in surprise, forgetting I was planning on ignoring him.
âArdenâs a good guy,â Oliver told me, surprising me more. âIâm sure heâll understand.â
I stopped, turning to face Oliver, raising an eyebrow. âI thought you hated him?â
âI do.â
âThen whyâ¦?â
âJust because I hate him doesnât mean I donât think heâs a good guy.â
I gave Oliver a confused look. âWhy do you hate him?â
Oliverâs friendly aura suddenly dropped. He narrowed his eyes at me, a frown slipping on his face. âThatâs not your business.â
âI know. But Arden told me that the reason you two arenât friends anymore is because you broke off the friendship.â
Oliver made an annoyed face. âWhy do you guys talk about me?â
âWhy did you stop being friends with him?â
âClaire moved us,â Oliver told me with a shrug. âWe didnât live near each other anymore.â
I pursed my lips. âThat didnât mean you two had to stop being friends.â
âLook, I just didnât want to be friends with him anymore, okay?â
âNo, I want to know why,â I said stubbornly.
âYouâre prying,â Oliver excused.
I puffed out my chest. âWell Iâm curious.â
âWell itâs none of your business,â Oliver snapped, brushing by me. âCome on, letâs go eat.â
Frowning, I followed Oliver up to the Chinese restaurants entrance. The front room was cluttered with people talking animatedly. Oliver scowled in annoyance and I couldnât help but smile. Did he expect it to be empty in here? He wedged in between an old couple and quickly followed, apologizing as I pushed past them.
âWeâll get take out and go back to the bar,â Oliver told me, standing in the take-out line. âI donât feel like waiting for a table.â
âSure,â I responded, leaning against a counter that held a large goldfish tank. For a second I watched the large fish swimming around in a pack, mesmerized by their color.
Suddenly Oliver stepped back into me, blocking my view, and bringing us to an uncomfortable proximity. He glanced over his shoulder as if he was surprised I was behind him.
âWhat are you doing?â I asked casually, trying to slip out from behind him.
He shot me a panicked look. âWe have to leave.â
âWhy?â
âNever mind, letâs just goââ
A high-pitched squeal suddenly broke the murmurs of those surrounding us. âOli!â
Oliver tensed, his head snapping back to the front. âHey, Lily.â
Lily? My eyes widened considerably and I looked around Oliver to see an adorable young girl standing before Oliver, her eyes wide in excitement. Immediately I recognized Oliverâs bright blue eyes, and his umber hairâ which she had tied into two, cute, little ponytails.
Lily moved forward, wrapping her little arms around Oliverâs legs. âOli, Iâve missed you!â
Oliver stood stock-still, his hands straight at his sides. A frown crossed my face. Wasnât Oliver good with kids? He never acted like this around Elliotâ and Elliot wasnât related to him like Lily was. When Lily pulled away she grinned largely up at her brother.
âWhere are your mom and dad?â Oliver asked, looking around. âAre you with them?â
Lily nodded, pointing towards the back of the room. âThey are sitting at the table. When I saw you I came right over!â
Oliver and I both followed Lilyâs pointing finger and located a couple that were pushing away from a table in the back. Oliver let out a sigh of frustration as the couple started towards us. My eyebrows knit in confusion when I realized that the both of them looked wary. Lily grabbed Oliverâs hand and started tugging him towards them.
âCome on, Oli!â
Oliver quickly yanked his hand out of Lilyâs, taking another step backward. âI have to goââ
âLily!â a sharp voice rang out, and I turned to see it belong to the woman who I assumed was Lilyâs mother. She had dirty blonde hair that short and cropped, framing her face. Her eyes were a dull brown, and for some reason, she looked nervous.
âMom! Look who it is!â Lily cried excitedly, going to her step-mom. âItâs Oli! Remember?â
Lilyâs step-mom glanced at Oliver. âI remember. Hello, Oliver.â
âHello Kate,â Oliver muttered, adverting his gaze. âAndy.â
Andy, Lilyâs step-dad, nodded in greeting to Oliver, his facial expression staying blank. He had short, curly brown hair, and bright green eyes. He didnât resemble Lily at all. Nor did Kate.
Kateâs eyes slid over to me and I quickly threw a grimace at her, unable to pull out a smile. What Oliver had asked earlier was bothering me. Where are your mom and dad?
âAre you Oliverâs friend?â she asked, giving me a small smile.
âUm, yeah,â I responded, glancing at Oliver. He was staring determinedly at the fish tank, his jaw clenched.
Lily looked up at me in excitement. âIâm Oliâs friend too!â
âOliverâs⦠friend?â I echoed, my eyebrows knitting in confusion. âI though you wereââ
Suddenly Oliverâs hand was over my mouth, holding it tightly. Kate let out a gasp of surprise, taking a step backwards. Andy took a step backwards, looking menacingly at Oliver. Lily looked confused, looking between Oliver and myself, her mouth slightly open.
âWeâre leaving,â Oliver stated in a hard voice, shooting me a glare.
I stared back at him in surprise, reaching my hands up to pull his hand away from my mouth. He held his hand against my mouth firmly, glancing back at Andy and Kate. I followed his gaze and saw Kate giving me a scared look.
âOliver,â Andy said in a warning voice.
Oliver dropped his glare and turned to Andy, a frown on his face. âWeâre leaving. Enjoy your dinner.â
âYouâre leaving?â Lily asked in a disappointed voice. âBut Oliââ
Oliver sent me a warning look before pulling his hand away from my mouth. He then crouched down in front of Lily, putting on a tight smile. âSorry Lily. Iâve got to get back to work.â
âBut you just got here,â she protested. âI havenât seen you in forever!â
âSorry,â Oliver apologized again. âMaybe weâll see each other again in the near future.â
Lily pouted. âFine.â She quickly threw herself at Oliver, putting her arms around his neck in a hug. âSoon!â
Oliver froze, trying to stay as still as possible. Kate and Andy exchanged an alarmed look, which didnât go by unseen. I stared at them incredulously.
âWhat was that look for?â I accused them, feeling irritated for some reason.
Kate looked at me in surprise. âWhat look?â
âThe look youâve been giving Oliver ever since you saw him,â I snapped. âThe one that makes me think heâs a murderer or something.â
âHarley,â Oliver snapped, shooting me another warning look. âDrop it.â
I glanced at him. âWhat? Why? Theyâre acting likeââ
âI said drop it,â he growled, lightly pulling Lily away from him.
Andy quickly stepped forward, pulling Lily towards him. Lily frowned, looking up at her stepfather. Kate cleared her throat, nodding once to Oliver. âNice to see you again,â she said.
âYou too,â Oliver responded, turning his back. âLetâs go.â
âBut Oliverââ
Oliver grabbed my upper arm, dragging me towards the exit. âShut up.â
I glanced back at Kate, Lily, and Andy. Lily was staring after Oliver, looking like she was going to cry. Andy and Kate, however, both looked relieved. Oliver didnât let go of my arm until we were all the way back on the street. He dropped my arm, immediately turning his back to me, and heading back towards the bar.
âOliver!â I called after him, quickly hurrying forwards. âWait a minute!â
He ignored me. I scowled, grabbing his arm, and pulling him to a stop. He turned to glare at me. âWhat?â
âWhat⦠What the heck was that all about?â I demanded, looking back towards the Chinese place. âWhy did Lilyâ¦?â
âLily doesnât know Iâm her brother.â
My jaw-dropped. âWhat?â
Oliver gave me a hard look. âI think thatâs pretty self-explanatory.â
âBut⦠Butâ¦â I trailed off, unable to think of anything to say. Lily didnât know Oliver was her brother? âDo Andy and Kate know?â
âDuh.â
âThen why doesnât Lily?â
Oliver clenched his jaw, looking to the side. âItâs better this way. Kate, Andy, and Lily make a nice family.â
âBut Oliverâ¦â
âItâs better than having Lily grow up without knowing who her real mom and dad are, isnât? Better than having her wonder why her older brotherâs family refuses to talk to her? At least with Kate and Andy she can have a normal life.â
I stared at Oliver, biting my lip. âWhy did Andy and Kate seem soâ¦â I hesitated, trying to think of the right words.
âWhy did they look at me like I might attack someone?â Oliver guessed, his hard expression returning. âBecause apparently they donât let things go.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âBecause I got angry and attacked Andy before,â Oliver stated simply. âAnd then my dad because he was in the same room at the time.â
I stared at him in surprise. âWhat? Why?â
Oliver rolled his eyes. âImagine someone trying to take Elliot away from you. And it just so happens the man who is giving Elliot away and the man who is taking Elliot away are in the same room as you, and youâre angry with both of them because they are taking Elliot away from you without your say.â
My fists clenched. âNo oneââ
âExactly,â Oliver cut me off. âYouâd be angry. I was angry. And I just lost control. Hence why I was sent to Wesley Academy. The funny thing is it was Claire who decided I should go here. My dad forgave me right away because he understood what I was going through.â
âClaire?â I stated in shock.
âYep.â
âBut if your dad forgave you, then why did sheâ¦?â
Oliver shrugged. âMaybe the same reason Kateâs afraid to let Lily around me. It might happen again. But Iâm not as immature as I was back then.â
I furrowed my eyebrows, frowning deeply. âI thought you said Kate and Andy were good people.â
âThey are good people.â
âNo theyâre not!â
âYes, they are,â Oliver stated firmly. âThey may not like me, but they love Lily. They are the best for her, and I appreciate that.â
I ducked my head, glaring at the ground. Even if Oliver said that, they should at least let Oliver see Lily. I couldnât imagine not being able to see Elliot. The thought made my heart clench uncomfortably. âYouâre a strong person, Oliver.â
Oliver looked at me in surprise, raising an eyebrow. âFor what?â
âPutting your sister over yourself.â
Oliver shrugged. âYou would do the same, wouldnât you? Iâm no different than you are.â
I looked back up at him, smiling slightly. âI would. I guess weâre more alike than I thought.â
Oliver snorted. âIâm nothing like you. Youâre a little girl.â
âIâm not a little girl!â
âAw, is the little girl upset?â Oliver teased, smirking at me. âWant me to buy you a lollipop?â
I glared at him. âYouâre only a year older than me!â
âCome on, little girl,â Oliver said, putting a hand on my shoulder, ignoring my retort. âThe pizza place is calling. I donât feel like going back to work yet.â
I frowned. âWonât Anthony be angry?â
âHeâll understand,â Oliver responded with a shrug. âYouâre in a better mood now, right?â
My mouth opened slightly. I had been so caught up about Oliver, I had forgotten about Arden. Immediately my shoulders sagged. âNoâ¦â
Oliver smirked. âWhatever your worrying about, worry about it later. I want pizza and a paid break. One night without feeling bad wonât hurt, right?â
I hesitated for a moment. If I was with Oliver, I could forget about lying to Arden for at least a little while. Then I could figure out what I should do about it. A smile made its way to my face. âOne night.â
Oliver nodded. âYou can go back to pain and guilt tomorrow.â
âWhoop-de-do,â I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes. âI canât wait.â
