Josiah drove Lysander all the way to the military hospital in East Harborbrook.
Before even stepping into the ward, Lysander heard the voice of her former motherâinâlaw, Susan. âMom, Josiah has already gone to pick Lysander up. Donât worry.â
âWho are you?â
âIâm your daughterâinâlaw, Susan. Why donât you not recognize me again, Mom?â
âSusan?â
âYes. Iâm Susan.â
âJosiah is five this year, right? I saved some cloud cake fr
him. Bring him home and let him have it, Susan.â
Susanâs voice was choked with tears. âOkay, sure. Josiah will be here so
Josiah pushed open the door and stepped in, greeting, âGrandma.â
Susan immediately rose to her feet and pulled him to Elisaâs hospital bed. âMom, look, Josiah is here.â
Still, Elisa didnât recognize him. âWho are you?â
âGrandma, itâs me, Josiah.â
âNo, youâre not. Josiah is only five years old, and he has gone missing.â
Josiah crouched down by the hospital bed, grasping Elisaâs weathered hand. He said gently, âGrandma, Iâm not missing. Lysander helped me find my way home, and Iâm back.â
âLysander?â Elisa perked up instantly. âLysander is here? Where is she?â
Seeing that, Susan turned to look at Lysander, her expression pleading. âLysander, Iâm sorry to have troubled you in making a trip over.â
Lysander found it distressing to see Elisa in her current condition.
The latter wore an oxygen mask, her breaths coming in labored gasps. The hospital bed was surrounded by machines, some administering medication, others monitoring her vitals.
All signs indicated that Elisa was in really bad shape.
Susanâs eyes were rimmed with red from crying. âThis morning, we almost⦠Fortunately, the doctor discovered her in time and managed to save her. But she likely only has a few days left.â
A stab of pain struck Lysander. She grasped Susanâs hands. âGrandma Elisa is a blessed woman. Sheâll be fine.â
âSweetheart, I know you mean well, but the truth is, her condition is quite critical. The doctor said itâs best to fulfill her wishes as soon as possible these few days so we wonât have any regrets later.â
Lysander gave a slight nod hesitantly.

âI know that you no longer have any ties with the Guerra family since youâve divorced. We really shouldnât trouble you either. However, your Grandma Elisa kept asking to see you, and itâs her last wish.â
âI understand, Madam Susan. Iâll go and see Elisa.â
Susan hastily nodded. âOkay, sure. Please talk with her a bit more.â
Josiah stood up, vacating the only spot left by the hospital bed.
Lysander slowly made her way over and crouched beside the hospital bed. âGrandma Elisa, Iâm-â
âLysander, youâre here!â
Elisa was beside herself with excitement. Despite having a needle in her hand, she clutched Lysanderâs arm. Her grip was rather forceful, assailing the latter with pain.
Nonetheless, Lysander didnât utter a word, simply allowing Elisa to hold onto her.
She understood that the elderly sometimes lacked a sense of measure in the force they exerted.
âYes, Grandma Elisa, Iâm Lysander. Iâve come to see you.â
âGood, good. Youâre such a good child.â Elisa suddenly sobbed, bursting into tears in an instant. âAre you divorced from Josiah, sweetheart?â
Taken aback, Lysander turned to look at Josiah.
Josiah was also shocked. He turned his gaze to Susan.
Meanwhile, Susan was flustered. âI didnât say anything. I didnât even mention a word about it.â
Elisa continued, âJosiah just doesnât see your worth. He would rather fancy a heartless woman than appreciate you. Sweetheart, did it hurt during the surgery?â
