Chapter 7

No More Doubts

Between Hearbeats

The next morning, Abhishek woke up to the sound of soft humming. He turned over and found Meera sitting on the edge of his bed, scrolling through her phone, her hair messy from sleep, wearing his hoodie.

For a second, he just stared.

This—her being here, feeling like she belonged—made every single worry from last night seem ridiculous.

"You're staring," Meera said without looking up.

Abhishek smirked, propping himself up on his elbow. "Can’t help it. My girlfriend’s gorgeous."

Meera shot him a look but couldn’t hide her smile. "Flattery will get you everywhere, Sharma."

He reached out, tugging at the sleeve of his hoodie. "You planning on keeping that?"

"Obviously," she said, standing up and stretching. "It’s comfy, and it smells like you."

Abhishek grinned. "So, you miss me even when I'm right here?"

Meera rolled her eyes. "Okay, let’s not boost your ego this early in the morning."

He chuckled, watching as she wandered toward the kitchen. "Coffee?"

"Please," she called over her shoulder.

Abhishek followed her, leaning against the counter as she poured them both a cup. As much as last night had cleared the air between them, he still felt like he had to say one more thing.

"You know," he started, watching her carefully, "I’ve never really been the jealous type before. I don’t like feeling that way."

Meera turned, handing him his coffee. "You weren’t jealous, Abhi. You were human."

He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, but I don’t want you to ever feel like I don’t trust you."

Meera softened, setting her cup down before wrapping her arms around his waist. "I know you trust me. And I also know that sometimes, our own insecurities get the best of us." She tilted her head. "But the fact that you talked to me about it? That’s what matters."

Abhishek exhaled, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I’m really lucky to have you, you know that?"

Meera grinned. "Damn right, you are."

They stood there for a moment, wrapped up in each other, the smell of coffee filling the air.

Then, Meera pulled back slightly, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Speaking of trust… I have to meet Aarav later for lunch. You cool with that?"

Abhishek groaned dramatically. "Meera!"

She burst out laughing, swatting his arm. "I’m kidding! Relax, possessive boy."

He shook his head, grinning. "You’re actually the worst."

"And yet, you love me."

Abhishek smirked, pulling her closer. "Yeah, I do."

And this time, there were no doubts left.

A week passed, and things between Abhishek and Meera were better than ever. They had fallen into an easy rhythm—late-night calls, sneaking moments together when she came to watch practice, stolen kisses in quiet corners.

But just when Abhishek thought he could finally relax, Aarav came back into the picture.

It was after a long day of practice, and Abhishek was walking toward the parking lot when he spotted Meera standing near her scooter, talking to Aarav.

The same Aarav who was leaning way too casually against her scooter, smiling in a way that made Abhishek’s jaw tighten.

Meera looked up just as Abhishek reached them. Her face lit up instantly. "Hey, you’re done with practice?"

Abhishek barely glanced at Aarav as he nodded. "Yeah."

Aarav straightened, offering his hand. "Good to finally meet you properly, man. I’ve heard a lot about you."

Abhishek hesitated for a second before shaking his hand. "Yeah? Same here."

Aarav smirked slightly, as if he caught the edge in Abhishek’s tone. "Meera and I were just catching up. She was telling me how serious things are between you two."

Abhishek’s eyes flickered to Meera, who gave him a don’t-start look before turning back to Aarav. "I was actually about to leave. But it was good seeing you again," she said, smiling politely.

Aarav held up his hands. "Of course. I won’t keep you." Then, with a small grin, he added, "Take care of her, Sharma."

Something about the way he said it—like he was handing over something—made Abhishek’s blood boil.

Meera must have felt his tension because the second they were out of earshot, she sighed. "Abhi."

"I don’t like him," he muttered, unlocking his car.

Meera rolled her eyes. "I know. You’ve made that very clear."

"He acts like—like he still has some claim over you."

Meera turned to face him fully. "He doesn’t."

Abhishek clenched his jaw. "Then why does he look at me like I’m just some temporary replacement?"

Meera exhaled, stepping closer. "Do you really think I’d be with you if I wanted anyone else?"

Abhishek sighed, leaning back against the car. "No. But I also know guys like him. They don’t give up easily."

Meera studied him for a moment before shaking her head with a small smile. "You really love me, don’t you?"

Abhishek looked at her, his voice quieter but firm. "You have no idea."

Meera smirked, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Then let me make this clear. Aarav is my past. You are my future. And if he hasn’t figured that out yet…" She leaned up, brushing her lips against his. "He will soon."

Abhishek felt his heartbeat slow, the tension in his chest easing. He pulled her closer, his hands settling on her waist. "Good. Because I don’t plan on going anywhere."

Meera grinned. "Damn right, you don’t."

But as much as her words reassured him, Abhishek had a feeling this thing with Aarav wasn’t over yet.

And he wasn’t wrong.

Because two days later, Aarav showed up at their practice session—

and he wasn’t there just to watch.
