The Moment Everything Changed
Between Hearbeats
The house was lively when he stepped inside, filled with laughter and the smell of fresh parathas. The dining table was already occupied by some of his new teammates, who waved him over.
âAbhi! Welcome to the big leagues, man!â Ishan Kishan, the teamâs wicketkeeper, grinned, handing him a glass of juice. âHope youâre ready for some real cricket now.â
Abhi chuckled, shaking his hand. âAlways.â
But before he could sit, Virat clapped a hand on his shoulder. âGlad you made it, man. Make yourself at home. Oh, and meet my little sisterââ
Abhi followed Viratâs gazeâ
And felt his entire world tilt.
There, standing near the kitchen counter, was Meera.
His Meera.
His girlfriend of three years.
His rock, his biggest supporter, his secret keeper.
His new seniorâs little sister.
His heart stopped.
Meera, holding a plate, froze in place. Her eyes went wide with horror, all color draining from her face as she realized what was happening.
For a long, stunned second, nobody spoke.
And then Virat, completely oblivious to the tension, smiled and casually draped an arm around her shoulders.
âAbhishek, meet Meera, my little sister. Meera, this isââ
âI know who he is,â Meera blurted, her voice slightly higher than usual.
Abhiâs brain short-circuited.
She was his what?!?!
Of course she was.
She had known how serious he was about cricket and had hidden this the whole time.
And yet, for three years, she had never once mentioned Virat. Never once let it slip.
Virat chuckled. âWell, that makes it easy then.â He gestured toward the table. âCome on, letâs eat.â
But the rest of the team was already suspicious.
Something was off.
Ishan raised an eyebrow, looking between Abhi and Meera. âWait⦠why do you both look like youâve just seen a ghost?â
Another teammate snickered. âYeah, itâs like they know something we donât.â
The way Meera and Abhi were staring at each other, as if trying to communicate telepathically, wasnât helping.
Abhi felt like he was about to explode. His mind was racing. He needed to say somethingâanything. But before he could, Meera panicked.
âBhai, Iââ
Virat frowned, his smile fading. âWhat?â
Meeraâs hands tightened around the plate she was holding. âI⦠uhâ¦â She was scrambling for words.
But Virat, a seasoned athlete trained to read his opponents, was already catching on. His sharp gaze flickered between his sister and his newest teammate.
His jaw tightened.
âNo,â he said, shaking his head slowly. âMeera. Tell me youâre notââ
Meera gulped.
Viratâs eyes darkened. âYouâre dating?â
And that was all it took.
The entire room erupted.
âWHAT?!â Ishan nearly choked on his food.
âNo way!â Yashaswi howled, slapping the table.
âTHIS IS GOLD!â Shubman laughed (as for once he won't be the one that's the teasing target by the team).
Abhi rubbed his face, groaning. This could not be happening.
Meera looked like she wanted to sink into the ground and disappear.
Meanwhile, Virat turned to Abhi, murder in his eyes. âYouâhow long?â
Abhi sighed, knowing there was no escape now. âThree years.â
âTHREE YEARS?!â
Viratâs voice boomed across the room as laughter exploded around them.
âOh my God,â Rohan wheezed. "She hid it from both of you?" (Catching on seeing abhi's reaction).
Another player nudged Abhi. âDude, youâve got guts dating the captainâs sister behind his back.â
âI didnât know!â Abhi shot back. âSHE didnât tell me!â
Virat whipped around to Meera. âAnd you! Youâve been lying to me?â
Meera winced. âTechnically⦠not lying. Just⦠not telling.â
Virat ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident. âFor three years?â
âOkay, okay, in my defense,â Meera said quickly, âI was going to tell youââ
âOh yeah?â Abhi cut in, arms crossed. âWhen, exactly? On our wedding day?â
The table erupted again.
âBRO, IMAGINE THE WEDDING INVITE!â Ro laughed. â'Dear Virat, surprise! I married your teammate!'â
Virat looked ready to murder someone.
Meera groaned, throwing up her hands. âOkay! I get it! I messed up! But this,â she gestured wildly at the chaos, âwas not how I wanted this to go!â
Abhi scoffed. âOh really? And how exactly were you planning on introducing us?â
Virat glared at both of them. âYou two are so dead.â
Meera groaned dramatically.
The entire team howled with laughter, enjoying every second of the drama.
And Abhi?
Well, he wasnât sure whether to be angry, impressed, or just accept the fact that his girlfriend had completely blindsided him.
One thing was certain, thoughâ
This was a dinner heâd never forget.
The laughter had finally died down after dinner, but the tension between Virat, Abhi, and Meera was far from over.
As soon as the rest of the team left, Virat dragged Meera and Abhi to the living room, arms crossed, his expression thunderous.
âExplain. Now.â
Meera took a deep breath, glancing at Abhi, who just raised his eyebrows, silently saying,
This is your mess. You fix it.
She swallowed hard and turned to her brother. âOkay, bhai, before you get too angryââ
âToo angry?â Virat repeated incredulously. âMeera, I just found out youâve been dating my teammateâfor three yearsâwithout telling me. I think Iâm allowed to be angry.â
Meera sighed. âLook, I wanted to tell you, butââ
âBut what?â Virat cut her off. âYou thought Iâd be unreasonable?â
Meera bit her lip. âUh⦠yes?â
Virat glared. âExcuse me?â
Abhi cleared his throat, stepping in. âVirat bhai, to be fair⦠youâre kind of terrifying when it comes to Meera.â
Virat whipped around. âOh, so now you want to talk?â His jaw clenched. âYou dated my sister behind my back, Abhi. You didnât think it was worth mentioning?â
Abhi sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. âI didnât know she was your sister! I only found out todayâthe same time you did.â
That made Virat pause. His eyes narrowed as he turned back to Meera.
âYou never told him?â he asked slowly.
Meera squirmed. âWell, um⦠no.â
Abhi crossed his arms. âExactly. I was just as blindsided as you.â
Virat scoffed. âOh, so youâre the victim here?â
Abhi gave him a look. âDude, imagine dating someone for three years, thinking you know everything about them, and then suddenly finding out theyâre your captainâs sister.â
Virat hesitated for a second. He had to admitâif the roles were reversed, heâd lose his mind.
Still, he wasnât ready to forgive either of them just yet.
The Interrogation Begins
âSo letâs get this straight,â Virat said, pacing. âYou two have been together for three years.â
âYes,â Meera muttered.
âAnd in those three years, youââ he pointed at Meera âânever thought to tell me.â
She groaned. âYes, I know, I know. Bad sister. Very bad. Got it.â
Virat turned to Abhi. âAnd youâyou just happened to fall for my sister?â
Abhishek sighed. âTrust me, I didnât plan it.â
Meera scoffed, nudging him. âWow. Romantic.â
Abhi shot her a look. âNot the time, Meera.â
Virat ignored them. âSo when exactly were you planning on telling me? After you got married?â
Meera winced. ââ¦Maybe?â
Abhi groaned. âOh my God, Meera.â
Virat looked ready to explode.
âYou two are unbelievable.â He pinched the bridge of his nose. âI should make your life hell, Abhishek. I shouldââ
Abhi raised an eyebrow. âAre you going to drop me from the team?â
Virat glared at him. âUnfortunately, I canât. The board would notice if I started cutting players for dating my sister.â
Meera sighed in relief. âSo⦠youâre not going to kill us?â
Virat shot her a glare. âI didnât say that.â
Abhishek smirked. âCome on, man. Iâm a great guy.â
Virat gave him a deadpan stare. âYou think I care? Youâre still my little sisterâs boyfriend.â
Abhi held up his hands. âHey, at least you know I respect her. Would you rather she date some random guy you donât know?â
Virat hesitated. He hated to admit it, but⦠Abhishek was a good guy.
ââ¦Thatâs not the point,â he muttered.
Meera smiled hopefully. âSo⦠does that mean you approve?â
Virat snorted. âLetâs not get ahead of ourselves.â
<â (â ï¿£â ︶â ï¿£â )â â
Later that night, Abhi and Meera sat on her balcony, watching the stars.
Meera let out a long sigh. âWell. That couldâve gone worse.â
Abhishek chuckled. âCould it, though?â
She nudged him. âAt least he didnât kick you off the team.â
He smirked. âYet.â
Meera laughed softly, then leaned against his shoulder. âAre you mad at me?â
He exhaled, wrapping an arm around her. âI was. But honestly⦠I get it. You were scared of what would happen.â
She tilted her head up at him. âAnd now?â
He smiled. âNow? We survive your brotherâs death glare together.â
She grinned. âDeal.â
And as Abhishek pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, he realizedâ
No matter how chaotic things got, no matter how insane their love story wasâ¦
He wouldnât change it for the world.
