Chapter 2

The Moment Everything Changed

Between Hearbeats

The house was lively when he stepped inside, filled with laughter and the smell of fresh parathas. The dining table was already occupied by some of his new teammates, who waved him over.

“Abhi! Welcome to the big leagues, man!” Ishan Kishan, the team’s wicketkeeper, grinned, handing him a glass of juice. “Hope you’re ready for some real cricket now.”

Abhi chuckled, shaking his hand. “Always.”

But before he could sit, Virat clapped a hand on his shoulder. “Glad you made it, man. Make yourself at home. Oh, and meet my little sister—”

Abhi followed Virat’s gaze—

And felt his entire world tilt.

There, standing near the kitchen counter, was Meera.

His Meera.

His girlfriend of three years.

His rock, his biggest supporter, his secret keeper.

His new senior’s little sister.

His heart stopped.

Meera, holding a plate, froze in place. Her eyes went wide with horror, all color draining from her face as she realized what was happening.

For a long, stunned second, nobody spoke.

And then Virat, completely oblivious to the tension, smiled and casually draped an arm around her shoulders.

“Abhishek, meet Meera, my little sister. Meera, this is—”

“I know who he is,” Meera blurted, her voice slightly higher than usual.

Abhi’s brain short-circuited.

She was his what?!?!

Of course she was.

She had known how serious he was about cricket and had hidden this the whole time.

And yet, for three years, she had never once mentioned Virat. Never once let it slip.

Virat chuckled. “Well, that makes it easy then.” He gestured toward the table. “Come on, let’s eat.”

But the rest of the team was already suspicious.

Something was off.

Ishan raised an eyebrow, looking between Abhi and Meera. “Wait… why do you both look like you’ve just seen a ghost?”

Another teammate snickered. “Yeah, it’s like they know something we don’t.”

The way Meera and Abhi were staring at each other, as if trying to communicate telepathically, wasn’t helping.

Abhi felt like he was about to explode. His mind was racing. He needed to say something—anything. But before he could, Meera panicked.

“Bhai, I—”

Virat frowned, his smile fading. “What?”

Meera’s hands tightened around the plate she was holding. “I… uh…” She was scrambling for words.

But Virat, a seasoned athlete trained to read his opponents, was already catching on. His sharp gaze flickered between his sister and his newest teammate.

His jaw tightened.

“No,” he said, shaking his head slowly. “Meera. Tell me you’re not—”

Meera gulped.

Virat’s eyes darkened. “You’re dating?”

And that was all it took.

The entire room erupted.

“WHAT?!” Ishan nearly choked on his food.

“No way!” Yashaswi howled, slapping the table.

“THIS IS GOLD!” Shubman laughed (as for once he won't be the one that's the teasing target by the team).

Abhi rubbed his face, groaning. This could not be happening.

Meera looked like she wanted to sink into the ground and disappear.

Meanwhile, Virat turned to Abhi, murder in his eyes. “You—how long?”

Abhi sighed, knowing there was no escape now. “Three years.”

“THREE YEARS?!”

Virat’s voice boomed across the room as laughter exploded around them.

“Oh my God,” Rohan wheezed. "She hid it from both of you?" (Catching on seeing abhi's reaction).

Another player nudged Abhi. “Dude, you’ve got guts dating the captain’s sister behind his back.”

“I didn’t know!” Abhi shot back. “SHE didn’t tell me!”

Virat whipped around to Meera. “And you! You’ve been lying to me?”

Meera winced. “Technically… not lying. Just… not telling.”

Virat ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident. “For three years?”

“Okay, okay, in my defense,” Meera said quickly, “I was going to tell you—”

“Oh yeah?” Abhi cut in, arms crossed. “When, exactly? On our wedding day?”

The table erupted again.

“BRO, IMAGINE THE WEDDING INVITE!” Ro laughed. “'Dear Virat, surprise! I married your teammate!'”

Virat looked ready to murder someone.

Meera groaned, throwing up her hands. “Okay! I get it! I messed up! But this,” she gestured wildly at the chaos, “was not how I wanted this to go!”

Abhi scoffed. “Oh really? And how exactly were you planning on introducing us?”

Virat glared at both of them. “You two are so dead.”

Meera groaned dramatically.

The entire team howled with laughter, enjoying every second of the drama.

And Abhi?

Well, he wasn’t sure whether to be angry, impressed, or just accept the fact that his girlfriend had completely blindsided him.

One thing was certain, though—

This was a dinner he’d never forget.

The laughter had finally died down after dinner, but the tension between Virat, Abhi, and Meera was far from over.

As soon as the rest of the team left, Virat dragged Meera and Abhi to the living room, arms crossed, his expression thunderous.

“Explain. Now.”

Meera took a deep breath, glancing at Abhi, who just raised his eyebrows, silently saying,

This is your mess. You fix it.

She swallowed hard and turned to her brother. “Okay, bhai, before you get too angry—”

“Too angry?” Virat repeated incredulously. “Meera, I just found out you’ve been dating my teammate—for three years—without telling me. I think I’m allowed to be angry.”

Meera sighed. “Look, I wanted to tell you, but—”

“But what?” Virat cut her off. “You thought I’d be unreasonable?”

Meera bit her lip. “Uh… yes?”

Virat glared. “Excuse me?”

Abhi cleared his throat, stepping in. “Virat bhai, to be fair… you’re kind of terrifying when it comes to Meera.”

Virat whipped around. “Oh, so now you want to talk?” His jaw clenched. “You dated my sister behind my back, Abhi. You didn’t think it was worth mentioning?”

Abhi sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “I didn’t know she was your sister! I only found out today—the same time you did.”

That made Virat pause. His eyes narrowed as he turned back to Meera.

“You never told him?” he asked slowly.

Meera squirmed. “Well, um… no.”

Abhi crossed his arms. “Exactly. I was just as blindsided as you.”

Virat scoffed. “Oh, so you’re the victim here?”

Abhi gave him a look. “Dude, imagine dating someone for three years, thinking you know everything about them, and then suddenly finding out they’re your captain’s sister.”

Virat hesitated for a second. He had to admit—if the roles were reversed, he’d lose his mind.

Still, he wasn’t ready to forgive either of them just yet.

The Interrogation Begins

“So let’s get this straight,” Virat said, pacing. “You two have been together for three years.”

“Yes,” Meera muttered.

“And in those three years, you—” he pointed at Meera “—never thought to tell me.”

She groaned. “Yes, I know, I know. Bad sister. Very bad. Got it.”

Virat turned to Abhi. “And you—you just happened to fall for my sister?”

Abhishek sighed. “Trust me, I didn’t plan it.”

Meera scoffed, nudging him. “Wow. Romantic.”

Abhi shot her a look. “Not the time, Meera.”

Virat ignored them. “So when exactly were you planning on telling me? After you got married?”

Meera winced. “…Maybe?”

Abhi groaned. “Oh my God, Meera.”

Virat looked ready to explode.

“You two are unbelievable.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “I should make your life hell, Abhishek. I should—”

Abhi raised an eyebrow. “Are you going to drop me from the team?”

Virat glared at him. “Unfortunately, I can’t. The board would notice if I started cutting players for dating my sister.”

Meera sighed in relief. “So… you’re not going to kill us?”

Virat shot her a glare. “I didn’t say that.”

Abhishek smirked. “Come on, man. I’m a great guy.”

Virat gave him a deadpan stare. “You think I care? You’re still my little sister’s boyfriend.”

Abhi held up his hands. “Hey, at least you know I respect her. Would you rather she date some random guy you don’t know?”

Virat hesitated. He hated to admit it, but… Abhishek was a good guy.

“…That’s not the point,” he muttered.

Meera smiled hopefully. “So… does that mean you approve?”

Virat snorted. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

Later that night, Abhi and Meera sat on her balcony, watching the stars.

Meera let out a long sigh. “Well. That could’ve gone worse.”

Abhishek chuckled. “Could it, though?”

She nudged him. “At least he didn’t kick you off the team.”

He smirked. “Yet.”

Meera laughed softly, then leaned against his shoulder. “Are you mad at me?”

He exhaled, wrapping an arm around her. “I was. But honestly… I get it. You were scared of what would happen.”

She tilted her head up at him. “And now?”

He smiled. “Now? We survive your brother’s death glare together.”

She grinned. “Deal.”

And as Abhishek pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, he realized—

No matter how chaotic things got, no matter how insane their love story was…

He wouldn’t change it for the world.
