Chapter 904
The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning
Kaiâs resolve melted as he looked into Lanaâs eyes, glistening with the trails of recent tears.
âMadelynâs sick,â Kai said with a soft voice. âSheâs fresh out of surgery and still not out of the woods. I need to go see how sheâs doing.â
Lana moved closer and wrapped her arms around him, âCan I tag along this time? I wonât make any fuss, I swear. I just want to stick by you. We need you around more, for me and the baby, deal?â
Down in the underground parking lot of their apartment, Kai made sure Lanaâs seat belt was secure, âStick with me when we get there, okay? And donât worry about the folks there; theyâre harmless.â
âGot it. Iâll stay put, no worries,â Lana said, her voice laced with excitement at the prospect of accompanying him.
The previous nightâs snowstorm had left a chill in the air, prompting Kai to crank up the carâs heat before he gently straightened her scarf, âIf anything feels off, you tell me, alright?â
âAlright,â she answered.
Kai got lost in Lanaâs smile for a moment as they drove. The car glided steadily over the snow- cleared streets until they arrived at the Jent residence. Once the car was parked, Lana gripped Kaiâs hand and said, âIâm scared I might slip on the slippery ground.â
A maid approached to relieve Kai of his medical kit.
Kai wrapped his arm around Lanaâs shoulder and said, âWatch your step on those icy patches.â
As they made their way upstairs, Lana stayed close behind Kai. Once he had finished his examination, she placed his stethoscope back into the kit.
Kai then spoke to Zach, who had a serious expression, âDonât worry. Thereâs no major issue. Madelyn has a high fever, but Iâve given her the medication to bring it down. Sheâll likely feel much better after she wakes up.â
Noticing a ring on Madelynâs hand while he was checking her, Kai pondered, âZach acted quicker than I thought. He doesnât strike me as the kind to get all romantic and propose on one knee to Madelyn.â
Then he suggested to Lana, saying, âHead down and wait for me, will you? If youâre bored, you can âSure.â Lana nodded in agreement.
The maid escorted Lana out of the room. After the door closed, Kai and Zach went to the study in silent understanding. Kai sat on the couch, leaned back, and crossed his legs comfortably. âArenât you rushing into this a bit too much? Considering her health and the unresolved Young family issues, why the rush to propose?â Kai asked.
Zach felt the sting of Kaiâs words but maintained a steady voice, âShe will adapt to her new role.â
Kai took a cigarette from the coffee table, lighting it up. Recently, his research at the lab had consumed all his time, leaving him no moment for relaxation, much less for a smoke. As the sharp taste of nicotine filled his mouth, he posed a thought to Zach, âPerhaps consider her perspective for a change. Have you thought maybe she doesnât want what youâre offering?â
Lana was carefully balancing two steaming bowls of chicken broth as she walked upstairs. Finding the bedroom door cracked open, she peered inside and saw that it was empty. Then, she heard distant voices from the study.
âHypnosis isnât a cure-all; Lana is an anomaly. It wonât be effective on Madelyn. Effects like that donât last,â came Kaiâs voice from the room.
Lana tapped lightly on the door, silencing the voices inside. Her name linked with hypnosis did not seem to trouble her. She entered the study, and Kai immediately went to take the bowls from her.
âThe maids could have brought these up. Just be mindful of the baby,â Kai said.
Lana smiled gently. âI wanted to bring them myself. Also, the lady in the bedroom seems to be awake,â she said.
འའAt that, Zach quickly excused himself from the study.
With a hand supporting her waist, Lana made her way to sit by Kai, âIs that gentleman a friend? The one who reserved an entire hospital floor recently?â
Taking one of the bowls, Kai carefully blew on the hot broth before offering it to her, âYeah, thatâs him.
Have a taste; their maid makes good broth. Weâll have some lunch here before we go.â
