Vihan's POV

We’d barely glanced at the menu when her phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and froze. “Sujal bhai?” she murmured, her voice laced with surprise. She excused herself to take the call.

“Hello, bhai? … I’m at a party. What? Really? Why didn’t you tell us you were coming?… Oh, okay. Please stay there; we’re coming back. Bye, see you in 20 minutes.

The moment she disconnected the call, she looked apologetic. “Vihan, we need to go back. Mamu and his family have arrived, and they’re calling me home.”

What?? No!!

“Roohi, we’re already here for dinner—”

" Vihan we need to go back... Mamu and his family have come, and they want me to come. " She replied.

" But we are here to have dinner... "

" Oh... I am sorry, Vihan. But we need to go..." She looked apologetic.

" C'mon Roohi, You can meet them anytime; they live in Delhi itself. Lives barely 30 minutes away from your home. We need to talk, it is important." I said. But she got up.

" I know all that, but Mamu is calling me home; I can't say no to them. I hope you understand. Let's go back and if you are still so keen to have dinner, call some friend of yours, to give you company. I will take a cab." She said.

Frustration bubbled beneath my calm façade. “I’ll take you back,” I said curtly, abandoning any attempt to argue.

Her decision to leave stung more than I wanted to admit. I’d brought her here, not just because I wanted to spend time with her but because I needed to talk. To address the strange tension that had been building between us lately.

But instead of addressing it, I’d resorted to lies and half-truths, only to watch her walk away, oblivious to the storm brewing inside me.

What was happening to me?

For years, Roohi had been my constant—my best friend, my anchor. I’d never looked at her differently, never let myself entertain the possibility of more. But now… now, she was all I could think about.

And the realization terrified me.

We drove in silence, the weight of unspoken words pressing heavily between us.

My frustration bubbled over, and I blurted, “Roohi,” I began hesitantly, “I wanted to talk to you.”

“Talk about what?” she asked without looking at me.

“About this...arranged marriage thing. Are you seriously considering it?”

She turned to me then, her eyes flashing. “Yes! "

"Why?"

" Why?? Why does anyone get married"

Why is it bothering you?” she asked.

“I’m your friend. And as your friend, I think this is a mistake.”

She laughed bitterly. “Friend? That’s rich, coming from you. You barely notice me until something like this happens, and now you suddenly care? Is that why you took me out? To spoil my evening? ”

“That’s not fair, I wanted to take you out on a date,” I explained.

Her eyes widened in disbelief, then narrowed. “You? Take me on a date? Out of pity, of course. You realized I’ve never been on one, so you decided to be the knight in shining armor yet again. Thanks, Vihan; you are so considerate and very sweet, but please don't waste your time and energy. I am fine, even going on a date very soon, I don’t need your charity.”

Her words hit me like a punch. “It’s not a pity—”

“ Then what is it? Why now?

“Because you...I was missing my friends.. and since Gauravi and Mihir are not here, I have to make you see that you deserve better,” I said my voice firm.

“Better? And who are you to decide that? My family knows what’s best for me.” she asked.

Her words stung, but I refused to back down. “I just don’t want you to settle for someone who isn’t right for you.”

“And how do you know he’s not right for me?” she asked further.

“Because you don’t love him.”

“People fall in love after marriage too, Vihan. It’s not the end of the world.”

“But why the rush?” I argued.

She sighed, her frustration evident. “Ask my family. They think it’s time, and honestly, so do I. I also want someone who would love me like Raj loves Myra, and Ron loves Mahi. I want someone who loves me, who makes me his world. Is that so wrong?”

“No, it’s not wrong. But Garv isn’t that person.” I still argued.

“Why do you even care? I’ve never interfered in your love life, so why are you interfering in mine?”

“Love life? What love life? I don’t love any of those girls, and you know it,” I said, my voice rising. “And you certainly don’t love that idiot Garv.”

“Maybe I don’t. But if you can go on dates and flirt with whoever you like, why can’t I?” she asked.

“Because he’s not good enough for you,” I snapped.

“Enough, Vihan. Either stop the car, or I’ll get out and take a cab.

Her tone was final, left no room for argument, and I knew I’d pushed her too far. Gritting my teeth,   I clenched the steering wheel, my frustration barely contained, and increased the speed, swallowing the words that threatened to spill out.
