Chapter 3
The Mute Alpha
[The Mute Alpha - Chapter 3]
Song: Something Just Like This by The Chainsmokers & Coldplay

Seconds ticked. Minutes passed. Hours flew by. Trees blurred as the car passed them. The road became two lanes when I got off the highway. The sun no longer hung at the center of the sky. Instead, it set behind the tall mountains. The climate here was completely different compared to my pack.
The mountains off in the distance had snowy caps and they looked absolutely beautiful. The trees in this coniferous forest were massive and blocked out a huge portion of the sky.
My stomach churned, and I shifted in my seat, not feeling good. It was strange. The longer I stayed in the car, the closer we got to the pack, the more uneasy and anxious I felt. I didn't understand why I felt like this. I couldn't possibly be sick, because it was uncommon for a werewolf to get sick, especially an Alpha. Our immune systems were the best.
My wolf seemed to be off in his own reality. He hadn't communicated with me during the whole trip. When I questioned him about this feeling, he didn't respond. Since he refused to acknowledge me, I was forced to listen to the radio the whole time. The same obnoxious songs kept repeating, which annoyed the hell out of me.
Another hour rolled by, and I still drove on the same endless road. Not many cars passed by, not much traffic. That was until we reached the road that led me to the border entrance of the Crystal Mountain Pack.
Now I felt my wolf's presence, but he paced around, murmuring words to himself, which left me more confused than ever. I had never felt like this before.
'I read this somewhere...in a book,' I thought to myself. 'Werewolves usually practiced this strange behavior when one encountered their ma-'
My eyes widened as I straightened my posture, heart hammering against my chest in an unnatural manner.
Was it possible...?
Was it possible that my mate was here?
Anxiousness and hopefulness swept into my mind, which left me gripping the steering wheel. I could not get my hopes up. There was no way. I didn't deserve one.
Reality was a bitch, especially when it punched me in the face.
When I reached the edge of the border, a guard stopped the car. He walked over to my window and inspected me. When he realized my ranking, he bowed and allowed me to proceed through the gate.
Numerous cars parked in a small clearing. When I spotted an empty parking space, I pulled my car into it. Getting out of the car, I shoved the keys into my pocket. Glancing around, I noticed how many people actually showed up, more than last year.
A whole crowd of people walked towards a trail leading them directly through the forest. I followed them even though I already knew where to go. Torches lined the pathway, illuminating the forest in a way that created excitement among those chatting animatedly. The sound of music echoed along with voices and laughter. It grew louder the closer I got to the massive clearing.
I noticed a few familiar faces, ones belonging to Alphas from multiple meetings and others from visiting many packs and previous gatherings. Some of them smiled and waved, saying a 'hello' every once in a while. I responded to their greeting with a nod or a small wave. I wasn't really a people person.
When I reached the large clearing, the amount of people that attended shocked me. Last year there wasn't nearly as many people as this year. The alpha sure outdid himself this year. I wasn't surprised, though. He had money, and him and his Luna loved showing off their beautiful pack to others.
Round tables and chairs scattered the grass along with a couple of large tables containing food. More torches surrounded the clearing in a circle, similarly to the large trees caging everyone in. Large speakers stood next to a table with some electronic devices.
As I emerged from the sea of werewolves, the same disturbance from before settled in the pit of my stomach. It felt as if something fluttered around inside of me.
Sniffing the air, a sweet smell danced around the openings of my nose. It was sweet, but it had a tinge of something else, but I couldn't figure it out. Salty? Savory? My mind fogged up as I tried to think. I looked around for the owner, but no one caught my attention. Even though I was gifted with height, it didn't help at the moment. Someone must have been eating something, because it smelled like a dessert.
I stalked over to one of the trees near me and leaned against it with my head back against the trunk. My eyes wandered up to the sky and I stared up at it, continuing to breath in the mouth-watering, yet strangely familiar scent.
My eyes wandered back down to the crowd of people, who walked around aimlessly, met members from other packs, ate, or danced. I could never understand why they did these stupid events. It didn't help that it was practically mandatory for all of the Alphas to be here while the Betas took care of the rest of the pack. Why couldn't the Betas go to this and let the Alpha run the pack?
I attended this party about four times and it failed to bring me enjoyment. All they did was play music, serve intense alcoholic beverages, give out food, dance, and talk to each other over the extremely loud pounding of what they called music. I didn't know why they forced the Alphas of the neighboring packs to this lousy excuse of a party. Not only was it a waste of time, but practically an open invitation for rogues to attack the packs.
Sure, the Betas were fully capable of protecting the pack, but they have the same amount of strength as their Alpha. Alphas were gifted with so much strength and power, that it was easier for them to run the pack rather than the Beta.
"Hey man!" I heard a deep voice call out from beside me. I turned to see Alpha Xavier, the Alpha of the Sunset Shadows pack, stalking towards me with a lazy grin on his face. He stumbled slightly with each step he took, which made me realize he wasn't completely sober. I nodded my head in acknowledgment and bumped fists with him when he reached me. "How's it going?"
I shrugged not knowing how to respond. He stared at me with a frown etched on his lips. He eyed me sympathetically when he remembered who I was and my "backstory". Most of the Alphas around the area knew about my muteness. Most of them respected it and mentioned it, trying to work around it whenever we need to negotiate agreements. They didn't treat me differently, like a liability, which I greatly appreciated.
Xavier's hungry eyes wandered over a woman in a black, tightly-fitted dress as she sauntered by. He glanced at me for a split second. "I'll catch you around," he waved at me before following the woman into the crowd of sweaty bodies with starving eyes.
Shoving my hands into the pockets of my navy blue jeans, I observed the dancing figures in front of me. My breath got caught in my throat when my eyes landed on a pair of brown eyes.
They looked as if someone got a bucket of creamy chocolate and dumped it on her irises. I didn't know how I was able to see her beautiful eyes, because of the large distance between us, but it was like everyone around us had completely vanished, and my only line of vision was on her. Wavy auburn hair framed her pale face and her full, peach lips parted as she smiled, showing off her perfectly straight, white teeth.
Centered above her perfect lips and under her beautiful eyes, was a perfectly sculpted, button nose. An artist must have taken molding clay and sculpted it with careful precision, shaping it with just the right tools, taking years to complete it. She was the most breathtaking being I had ever seen. She put every single model to shame.
My eyes widened in realization.
Mine....
My mouth slightly parted as I drank in the sight of the stunning woman.
I didn't know what I was suppose to do or how I was supposed to approach her, because I obviously couldn't just go up to her and seduce her with my smooth talking. Hell, wooing was completely out of the picture. Frustrated, I ran my fingers through my hair.
My eyes narrowed and fists clenched when I spotted two guys walk up to my mate and her friend and gesture to where everyone danced. Without a single hesitation, they both took the guys' offers and headed over to the sweaty bodies. I frowned when I realized how close they were going to be. How this male would touch what belonged to me.
Hell, he shouldn't even be near her.
I growled lowly as he placed his hands on her thin waist and pulled her closer to his body. She stared up at him with a grin, and he winked at her flirtatiously in return. Possessiveness surged through my veins as he leaned forward and whispered something in her ear, making her giggle.
My jaw ticked in anger as I slunk a little closer, when some idiot decided to block my vision while dry humping the girl in front of him. Growling, I forcefully shoved him out of my way, making him trip over someone's foot and face plant into the ground. He yelled at me from behind but I ignored him by continuing to walk by.
The blasting music muted the sound of my footsteps against the grass. The song Victorious by Panic! At the Disco played on the speakers at high volume with the bass turned all the way up. It was so loud, that I guaranteed someone on the other side of the country could hear.
I continued to observe the goddess in front of me. I tried to ignore the fact that another male had his body all over her. I couldn't help but wonder what her name was, probably the most beautiful name ever. A name that suited her perfectly. Another song began to play on the large speakers, one that I heard about five times on the way here.
Hey, I was doing just fine before I met you
I drink too much and that's an issue but I'm okay...
A smile formed on my lips as I my mate step back from the guy. 'This is my chance,' I thought to myself as I pushed my way through the swarm of werewolves.
Hey, tell your friends it was nice to meet them
But I hope I never see them again...
My heart pounded faster with each step I took. The closer I got, the stronger her sweet scent became, similar to that of salted caramel, which was one of my favorite flavors.
I sucked in a deep breath when I stood a few feet away from her. She must've felt my presence, because she turned her head, her mesmerizing eyes meeting mine. My breathing completely halted when I saw emotions swirl in the depths of her irises. Slightly parting her lips, she stared at me with wide eyes.
