Ch.53 Shooting Stars
The Daughter of Time (Ace of Queens #6)
Chapter 53
1 week later
Heyder tapped his feet impatiently as Maya sat on the bed beside a sleeping Fiza. She glared at him over her shoulder as Gemma laughed and shook her head.
"Can you be any more annoying?" Maya asked.
"Yes, I can be," Heyder said.
"I can't focus with you tap dancing over there."
Heyder groaned as he moved away and sank into one of the wingback chairs. His long legs stretched out in his dark jeans as he leaned his forehead against one of his fingers. His brown eyes watched Maya hold Fiza's hand, waking her up from the deep slumber slowly.
"Gemma should be doing this," Heyder said.
"Shhhh," Maya shushed him.
"You're using too much energy. This shit is taking forever!"
"Oh my god, Heyder!" Maya snapped in frustration. "Now you're gonna tell me when I can and cannot use my magic?"
"Like you would even listen to what I would suggest," Heyder snorted.
"Suggest?" Maya narrowed her eyes. "You're over there demanding I don't use my magic and just sit on my ass all day."
"You can barely walk for five minutes without passing out!"
"That's a lie!" Maya jumped up from the bed causing Heyder to frown at her sudden movements. "Oh does that bother you, Heyder? Should I ask you before I get up?"
"Maya," Gemma spoke softly to her daughter as she reached for her.
"Tell him!" Maya pointed to Heyder. "He won't let me move! He's driving me insane!"
"You don't need to move!" Heyder fought his case hard. "Rye said you need to take things slow. That doesn't mean running around all over the fuckin place."
"Heyder," Gemma turned to the jinn. "She needs to move or her body will ache."
"Thank you!" Maya sank down onto the bed.
"Does she have to move like that?" Heyder pointed, jumping to his feet. "I swear the baby is gonna fall right out of her."
"Oh for fuck's sake," maya shook her head.
"Maya," Gemma frowned. "I think you sh-"
"Of course you take her side!"
"Heyder!" Gemma snapped. "Stop. You're older then everyone here. Act your age. I am not taking anyone's side."
Maya's blue eyes narrowed as she glared at Heyder. As she watched his eyes darkened too.
"What's the matter with you two?" Gemma frowned with disapproval. "Always shouting and yelling. My goddess. Is this what you're bringing my grandson into?"
"We're fine," Maya waved her mother's concerns away. "
Gemma raised a brow looking at Heyder.
"What she said," Heyder sank back into his chair. "She's just annoying at times when she doesn't listen."
"That's rich coming from you."
"Maya! Enough." Gemma scolded. "You know what? You two leave. I'll wake Fiza up and send her back. Just leave."
"No, mom," Maya sighed. She pushed her hair out of her face and looked down at Fiza. "I'm sorry. I can do this."
Before Heyder or Gemma could stop her, Maya took the sleeping girl's hand into her own and began to undo the slumber spell. She felt her baby whine as his source of energy lessened for just a few minutes. Biting down on the pain, Maya hid behind her hair to keep Heyder from seeing her face.
After a few more seconds of Heyden fussing, Maya sighed in relief as Fiza's eyelids began to flutter. Feeling as if she ran a marathon, Maya looked over at Heyder as he immediately flashed to her side.
"I'm here, birdie," he whispered as he bent down to kiss her forehead. His hand landed on her lower back, pushing his magic into her skin. Needing Heyden to calm down, Maya moved closer to the jinn and leaned against his body for support.
"And I bet you still won't listen to me," Heyder chuckled softly, shaking his head.
"She takes after her dad," Gemma said.
"Is Adeline a better listener?" Heyder asked, looking over his shoulder.
"Much better," Maya and Gemma said together.
"Should have married her then," Heyder teased.
"You picked the wrong sister," Maya shrugged.
Heyder laughter giving her shoulder a tight squeeze. The sound made Maya's heart jump and her insides warm. She was in love with the way his eyes squinted and crinkled every time he laughed.
As Heyder's laugh continued, Fiza began to stir. Her eyes opened as a deep frown formed on her face. Maya tugged on Heyder's shirt to catch his attention. She pointed to the girl on the bed and frowned.
"Do I have to?" Heyder whined.
"We talked about this," Maya looked up through her lashes. "We can't send her back blind and deaf."
"I mean we can."
"Heyder," Maya frowned.
"I just know she's gonna say something irritating or rude to you and it's gonna piss me off," Heyder groaned.
"Baby," Maya said softly. She took his hands and rubbed her thumb over his inked skin. "She's leaving. It makes no difference what she says anymore."
"Fine," Heyder wasn't happy but he wasn't going to go against his wife's wishes. He flicked his hands and Fiza gasped loudly.
As the girl scurried up in bed in fright, Heyder pulled Maya away. He was terrified Fiza's flaring arms or legs would hit her.
"Heyder," Fiza said breathlessly. Her wide eyes bounced around the room in confusion.
"How are you feeling?" Maya asked.
Fiza turned her gaze to Maya, "You!"
Heyder felt his anger flare up. He tried to move Maya behind him but of course the stubborn girl wouldn't budge. Fiza's eyes narrowed like shark knives and her mouth twitched.
"What did you do to me?" She demanded from Maya.
"Fiza, I -" Maya took a small step forward, despite Heyder trying to keep her by his side. He was about to let go of her hand and step in front of her when Fiza's eyes dropped to Maya's belly.
It was just a small bump. If one didn't pay attention close enough they would have missed it. Most days under Heyder's baggy shirts Maya wore, the bump was undetectable. But as she stood in front of Fiza in her fitted sweater and leggings, her tiny bump was on full display. Heyder was damn proud of it as he followed Fiza's eyes to Maya's belly.
"Who's baby is that?" Fiza's anger boiled.
"Mine, of course," Heyder said.
Fiza tore her eyes away from Maya's belly. She glared up at the girl with so much hatred in her eyes, Heyder began to feel his bones ache to blast her to bits and pieces.
Maya took in a steady long deep breath and placed a hand over her belly. The red ruby of her ring caught the light coming in through the window and shone like the sun itself. She held herself still as Fiza took a step forward.
"You shamele-" Fiza began to say but Heyder cut her off.
"Okay, that's enough," he snapped his fingers. "Fuck off."
A translucent portal opened beside the girl as the air in the room shimmered. Gemma held up her hands and focused the portal long enough for Fiza to sucked through like water down a drain. Once she disappeared, the witch opened her mind- link to her husband.
Exton, Gemma said. It's done, she's gone.
Okay, angel, Exton responded back. We're sealing the holes in the time veil.
Gemma let out a long deep sigh before shaking out her hands and turning to Maya.
"It's done," she smiled. "Your dad will take care of the rest."
"Thank you," Maya nodded. She felt Heyder's hand find its way to her back. He ran his hand up and down her spine to sooth her and heal her at the same time.
"Heyder, did you tell Maya about tonight?" Gemma raised a brow.
"No," Heyder shook his head. He looked over at the girl just in time to catch the suspicion in her eyes.
"What's happening tonight?" Maya asked.
"It's a surprise," Heyder kissed her cheek.
"I want to know," Maya said, leaning in closer. "Now."
"Nah."
"Mom, what's happening tonight?" Maya turned to look at her mother.
"Heyder prepared a surprise for you, I don't want to ruin his hard work," Gemma pretended to zip her lips.
"It was mostly Adeline," Heyder shrugged. "But the idea was mine. I want full credit for that."
"Is it a good surprise?" Maya asked.
"No, we're going to dress you in white and sacrifice you to a volcano," Heyder rolled his eyes.
"That's been your plan along, huh?" Maya laughed.
"I'm an evil genius," Heyder wrapped his arms around her.
"I have work to do," Gemma cleared her throat. "I'll see you all tonight."
"At least tell me what I should wear," Maya said as Gemma began to move to the door.
"Heyder will pick it out," Gemma said. "Don't worry."
"I definitely worry," Maya said under her breath.
As soon as Gemma slipped out of the room, Heyder began to leave a trail of kisses along Maya's neck. His hand found their way to her hair. His fingers tangled with her golden locks as he tilted her head back and captured her lips.
"You taste so good, birdie," he mumbled against her soft lips. "I want to kiss you until I have licked all the color off your lips."
Before Maya could respond, she felt the jinn's arms pick her up and move her legs around his waist. She hooked her arms around his neck as he moved closer to the bed and laid her down gently.
"What are you doing?" Maya asked as Heyder's hand began to slip under her shirt.
"I'm showing my wife how much I love her," Heyder whispered into her ears. "Do you have any idea how incredibly sexy you look with your little bump?"
Maya laughed as Heyder rubbed her belly. He held himself above her carefully, but as Maya pulled him closer, the jinn positioned himself beside her and buried his face in her hair.
"Heyder," Maya's hand stopped his hand on her sizzling skin. "We can't."
"Yeah, we can," Heyder picked up his head. "Rye said it was fine."
"What?" Maya's eyes flew open. She turned to look at the jinn as her jaw hung wide open. "You asked my grandmother about sex?"
"It's not my fault she's your doctor," Heyder said in his defense. "It was an important question I needed the answer to."
"You couldn't google it?"
"You think I didn't try?" Heyder snorted. "I wanted her professional opinion."
"I need to change doctors," Maya said to herself. "I can not believe you asked her."
"Can we talk about all this after?"
"No!" Maya pushed his shoulder. "It's weird."
"How?" Heyder asked sitting up. "Rye and google said it was completely normal."
"Heyden is technically in this room," Maya shook her head. "It's too weird for me."
"He has no idea what is happening right now!"
"Heyder!" Maya moved to get out of the bed. "No."
"Okay, okay, fine. Just don't move. Let me help you," Heyder jumped off the bed and helped Maya sit up. He tugged her shirt down and fixed her messy hair before pulling her gently to her feet.
"Can you walk, birdie?"
"Do you want me to answer no?"
"Yes...." Heyder smiled. "Please."
Maya shook her head laughing, "Heyder, I can't walk. I'm so tired, please carry me."
And in half a second, the jinn had her in his arms. He placed a kiss on her forehead before flashing her to their room. For the rest of the afternoon, Heyder healed Maya so that she would be all ready to handle the evening he had prepared for her. With every passing hour, Maya's excitement and curiosity grew and grew. When Heyder helped her slip into a long blush pink dress, Maya could hardly contain her excitement.
"Pink?" She asked looking down at her dress.
"Yeah," Heyder shrugged, scratching the back of his head. He was dressed in his usual uniform of dark jeans and a black t-shirt. His tattoos ran up and down his arms, but out of all of them Maya could only focus on the one on his forearm for her.
My one and only.
"You want to do anything else?" Heyder asked. "I don't know anything about this stuff."
Maya chuckled. She turned to the mirror and ran her finger through her hair before giving it a good shake and tossing it back.
"Maybe some earrings," She said, noticing how empty her neck and ears looked.
"Diamonds or pears?" Heyder asked, getting ready to snap his finger.
"No," Maya shook her head. "I already have."
Heyder watched as she moved closer to her dresser and opened her jewelry box. She pulled out the pair of earrings he had designed for her and slipped them into her ears.
"How do I look?" she asked, turning to face him.
"Even the angels in heaven are envious of my angel now," Heyder smiled.
"You're making me blush," Maya walked up to the jinn and brushed her lips over his. "Do I have to wait longer or can you tell me what my surprise is now?"
"I think I've kept you waiting long enough," Heyder smiled.
Maya could hardly keep her feet on the ground as Heyder walked her through the quiet halls of the palace. Her eyes were lit up with curiosity as they made their way to the family room. Heyder paused outside and looked over his shoulder.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Yes!" Maya said.
"Go ahead and open the door," Heyder stepped back.
Maya leaped forward and pushed the large double doors open. She let out a small yelp as her whole family yelled surprise from inside.
"Oh my god," Maya was speechless. Her eyes bounced around the hundreds of blue balloons around the room. Her family all cheered as Adeline rushed forward.
"It's a boy!" she pulled her sister into her arms and gave her a tight hug.
"Ada," Maya was stunned. "What is all this?"
"It was all Heyder's idea," Adeline said. "I just brought his vision to life."
"Not too bad," Heyder nodded looking around.
"Heyder," Maya turned to the jinn and smiled.
"It's about time we started celebrating our little boy," Heyder draped an arm over her shoulder and kissed her cheek. "Are you happy?"
"Yes!" Maya nodded. "Thank you. This is beyond amazing."
"Oh! There's cake. We have to hurry because Ian is dying to eat it," Adeline looked over to the little boy in Alec's arms.
"Let him cut the cake," Maya said as she let her sister pull her away from Heyder. He held her hand as long as he could before his fingertips could reach her no more and he was forced to let her go.
Heyder stood by the door watching Maya as her family surrounded her. She was glowing like a star. Her smile was radiant and her laugh was all he could hear. There was no explaining the feeling in the jinn's heart. He felt as if he could burst like a thousand splendid sun.
"Promise me you will always keep her happy like that," Exton suddenly spoke as he came to stand beside Heyder. Heyder tore his eyes away from his wife and looked at the man beside him.
"I promise," Heyder said.
"Are you going to stand here all night or are you going to go help her with all those gifts?"
"Jesus, what the fuck did you all get? The entire baby department?"
"It's my first grandchild," Exton pointed out.
"It's my first child," Heyder said. "He's gonna have everything."
"Yes, because I will make sure of it."
"No," Heyder said. "Because I will make sure of it."
Exton opened his mouth to retort when Maya's voice called both of their attention.
"Heyder!" She called. "Look what Margo and Ali got for Heyden!"
"My first nephew, baby!" Ali cheered.
Heyder shook his head and muttered under his breath as he made his way over to where Maya sat. He sank down into the seat beside her on the sofa and draped an arm around her shoulder.
"And this one is from me," Adeline handed Maya a box. "Wait there is a second part! I'll just go grab it."
As Adeline ran out of the room, Ella took her spot beside Maya.
"This is from Max and I," she handed Maya another box.
"You guys," Maya placed a hand over her heart. "Thank you."
"Just promise me I can babysit," Ella laughed. "That's all I want. I love babies."
"Why don't you and beanstalk just make your own babies then," Heyder asked.
Ella looked over at Maksim as he spoke to Arden and Alec on the other side of the room. Maya and Heyder laughed as they watched the blush appear on the girl's face.
"Leave her alone," Maya said to Heyder.
Just as Heyder was about to lean in for a kiss, a figure appeared behind Maya and leaned down. Heyder looked up and raised a brow at the unfamiliar face.
"Ben!" Maya shrieked with excitement. "Oh my god! Hi! What a surprise!"
"Hello, Maya," the vampire greeted her with a charming smile. "Congratulations."
"Thank you," Maya raised her arms for the hug. "Have you met my husband?"
"Ah, no. I haven't had the pleasure yet," Ben said. He looked over at Heyder and held out his hand.
"Heyder this is Ben, Adeline's husband. And Ben, this is Heyder, my husband," Maya introduced the two men.
"Hey," Heyder shook Ben's hand as he gave him a nod.
"Congratulations," Ben smiled. "On the wedding and the baby and everything else in between."
"Thanks," Heyder said. He let go of the man's hand and went back to focusing on Maya.
"Have you seen Adeline?" Ben asked, looking around the room.
"I think he went to her room to get something," Ella said. "I'll go get her."
"It's alright," Ben shook his head. "I'll find her."
The three of them watched Ben walk out of the room. Maya snuggled in closer to Heyder when she felt the jinn's warm eyes on her. She could feel his grin on her skin like the warmth of a fire.
"What?" she asked looking up at him.
"I think that was the first time you called me your husband," Heyder smiled.
"No, it's not," Maya shook her head. "I always call you my husband."
"Maybe in your head," Heyder said. "But never aloud."
Maya shook her head once more as she turned to look at Ella.
"Ell, would you be a doll and get my husband a drink."
"Coming right up," Ella jumped up. Heyder pulled Maya closer and kissed her lips.
"I didn't know what to get you," Cleo said, walking up to them with Piper. "Pip and I thought maybe a puppy but what if he's allergic?"
"Aw baby," Maya kissed the girl's cheek. "Heyden doesn't need anything else but your love."
"Eh you're already talking like a parent," Cleo shivered.
Heyder chuckled as the two little girls wandered off. Pretty soon, after all the gifts were opened and everyone had finished their cake, Adeline declared it was time to play some games. She had arranged all kinds of baby showere games and was admin about everyone participating.
"Heyder, you have to do this," Mavi said, tossing him the baby doll. "Do you even know how to change a diaper?"
"How hard can it be?" Heyder shrugged as he leaned forward and picked up the diaper.
Maya laughed as she leaned back against Adeline. Her feet rested on Heyder's lap as her slice of cake sat beside her on the table.
"Are you having fun?" Adeline asked.
"Yes," Maya smiled, looking up at her sister. "It was so good to see Ben after so long."
Adeline blinked in surprise, "Ben is here?"
"Yeah," Maya said. "We went to your room looking for you."
"Oh," Adelien frowned. "We must have missed each other."
"Are you o-"
"You can't use magic!" Rye yelled at Heyder. Maya and Adeline looked up as the jinn stood with the doll and the diaper.
"What kind of stupid rule is that?" Heyder asked.
"What if you didn't have magic?" Rye asked. "How would you change your son's diaper?"
"But I have magic," Heyder said. "Why the fuck wouldn't I use it?"
"Against the rules," Rye shook her head.
"Says who?" Heyder asked.
"Me!" Rye laughed. "I said so. My house, my rules."
"Babe," Maya called to the jinn. "You're not going to win this fight. Give up."
"Never," Heyder was determined to win.
"Heyder!" Maya laughed. "Trust me. You will lose. Badly."
"Listen to her," Rye said.
Heyder was about to argue with the woman when suddenly Ian's small voice caught his attention from across the room.
"Shooting stars!" the boy said gleefully. "Dad! Look! Shooting stars!"
Heyder followed the little boy's eyes out the window to the night sky. He peered into the darkness as three bright light beams shot across the sky. Handing the baby over to Owen, Heyder began to move closer to the window. No one noticed, other than Clare as the jinn went to go stand behind Ian.
Heyder felt his skin heat up as he followed the light beams across the sky. He could feel Clare's eyes on him as he opened his mind link to her.
Roof, in 10 minutes, Clare said to him.
I'll be there. Heyder responded.
"They're so bright," Ian said, leaning closer to the window. Heyder looked down at the little boy and frowned.
"Kid, go to your dad," he said. "Get away from the window."
"But my mommy said I could make a wish on the shooting stars," Ian looked up at the jinn.
"Trust me kid, you don't want to ask for any wishes from them."
Did you like it? What do you think?
