Chapter 54 Canât Have Both
âImogen, what happened to your head? How did you get hurt? Is it serious?â Henry looked at the bandage on Imogenâs head, very concerned.
Imogen quickly shook her head. âGrandpa, donât worry, it was just an accidental bump, not
serious.â
Her vision was just slightly blurred, which was not a big deal.
âThatâs good. Youâre still young, so you must take care of your health. Donât be like me. Iâm not in good shape and canât hold on for much longer,â Henry said weakly.
âNo, Grandpa, please donât say that. Your health will definitely improve, and you will live a long and healthy life.â Imogenâs tears swirled in her eyes.
âWhy are you crying like child? Hey, thereâs no need to cry.â Henry gently wiped away the tears from Imogenâs face.
âI wonât cry as long as youâre fine,â Imogen sobbed in a hoarse voice.
âImogen, my dear. Iâm an old man, and everyone will reach this stage eventually. Iâm already prepared for this day to come. Iâm not afraid, and I hope you wonât be afraid either, okay?â Imogen bit her lip, her smile heavy as if it weighed a ton, and she finally buried her face in the blanket and cried loudly.
She knew very well that everyone would face this stage in life.
Her grandparents and her father all passed away. Imogen had been through a lot, so she wasnât willing to accept this fact.
How could she accept that her beloved grandfather was about to leave her as well?
âGood girl, donât cry.â Henry affectionately stroked Imogenâs head.
Troy stepped forward and helped Imogen up, whispering, âDonât cry, Imogen. Grandpa is fine now.â
Imogen stopped crying, and she wiped her tears with her sleeve. âIâm such a fool. Grandpa is fine. Why am I crying? I should be smiling.â
Troy looked at her forced smile, pursing his lips and gently wiping the tears from her face.
âTroy, Imogen, itâs just the three of us here. Letâs have a heartâtoâheart talk. Are you planning to get divorced today? If it wasnât for my sudden illness, would you have already divorced?â Henry
asked.
Imogen and Troy exchanged glances.
âDonât try to hide things from me. Although Iâm old, Iâm not senile. I know what youâre thinking. Whatever is in your hearts, I know all of it.â
Tears brimmed in Imogenâs eyes, and her vision was
âSorry, Grandpa, I disappointed you completely blurred.
âImogen, donât cry. Iâm very concerned about you. I know that you appear strong and brave on the surface, but deep down, youâre the timidest.â
Henry was right. Deep down, she was timid, cowardly, insecure, sensitive, and she didnât even dare to let Troy know that she liked him.
She feared being laughed at, rejected, and losing everything. So, she acted like she didnât care about anything, as if that was the only way to avoid getting hurt.

She seemed indifferent to everything because she had nothing to lose.
âTroy, I know that you want to be with Sarah. I canât selfishly ruin your whole life, so I just hope you can agree to one thing.â
âGrandpa, please tell me. As long as I can do it, I will promise you,â Troy assured solemnly.
âI hope that you can try to get along well with Imogen. If, after my death, you still decide to divorce, I will tell your grandma in advance. She wonât stop you. Can you do it?â
Troy looked at Imogen, who was sobbing uncontrollably. He swallowed and then nodded. âI promise. From now on, I will try to get along well with Imogen.â
âImogen, what about you?â
âMe too. I promise to try to get along with Troy.â
âGood. Thatâs good. Iâm relieved now.â Henryâs face showed a relieved smile. âItâs so late, and Iâve kept you awake. Go back to rest. Iâm a bit tired too.â
He had just woken up after surgery, and it wasnât easy for him to stay awake for so long.
âGrandpa, go to sleep. Iâll be here with you. Iâll leave after you fall asleep.â
âOkay, good girl.â
Henry fell asleep soon.
Troy gestured silently to Imogen, but she couldnât see.
He could only lightly tap her shoulder and point to the door.
Imogen slowly stood up and followed Troy to the door.
Troy softly said, âYou should go back to rest.â
Imogen looked at his hazy face. âWhat about you? Youâve stayed up until now. Shouldnât you rest too?â
âIâve already called Leo. Heâll come over soon. Once heâs here, Iâll come find you.â
âOkay, then Iâll go to rest.â
âIâll walk you up.â
As Imogen entered the room, she asked Troy, âDo you want me to leave the door open?â
âOkay. Iâll come over soon.â
âAlright.â
Imogen lay down on the bed, but she couldnât fall asleep. She tossed and turned, and her mind heavy with sorrow.
Thinking about Henryâs condition, her heart ached even more.
And the matter that Henry had asked Troy to promise, he had sacrificed his life to give her and Troy a chance to get along sincerely
-She felt unworthy of such treatment.
If it were the other way around and she could prevent Henryâs death by breaking up with Troy, she would definitely cut ties with Troy without hesitation.
But there were no âifs.â
Things in the world were difficult to balance.
Faint footsteps echoed in the corridor and stopped at her ward.

Troy pushed open the door quietly, walked to her bed, and asked softly, âHavenât you fallen asleep yet?â
âNo. I canât sleep.â
Troy used the private bathroom in the ward and freshened himself up. Then, he took off his coat and got into the bed. âGo to sleep.â
âOkay.â
They tacitly didnât mention anything about Henry.
Imogen closed her eyes and gradually fell asleep.
When it was almost dawn, Imogen was awakened by a ringtone.
She reached for her phone but then put her hand back.
That wasnât her ringtone.
Troy picked up the phone on the bedside table and got off the bed.
Imogen thought he was going to answer the call outside, but he just stood by the window, looking at the view. âHello, Sarah.â
âTroy, I had a nightmare. Can you come and see me?â
âSorry, Sarah, if youâre scared, let Ylah keep you company. Grandpa is sick, and I have to stay at the hospital with him. I canât come over.â
âHuh? Grandpa is sick? Is it serious? I remember Grandpa was really nice to me before. Can I go see him?â
Troy fell silent, then glanced at Imogen on the bed.
Imogen quickly averted her gaze and closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep.
Clearly, she had been caught by Troy.
He covered the phoneâs microphone and asked Imogen, âSarah wants to come and see Grandpa. What do you think?â
Imogenâs failed attempt at pretending to sleep forced her to open her eyes and prop herself up, looking at him. âI donât think itâs appropriate. Grandpa just had surgery yesterday, and his condition isnât very stable yet. Moreover, I think the last person Grandpa wants to see right now is her. If she really wants to come, we should wait until Grandpa is transferred to a regular ward.â âI was thinking the same thing.â
Troy put the phone back to his ear. âSorry, Sarah, itâs not possible right now. Maybe in the future, Iâll arrange for you to come. Also, I wonât have time to see you these days.â
âTroy, are you leaving me? I had a nightmare about that day, and it was so terrifying. I dreamt I was locked in a dark room, shouting and crying, but no one could hear me. They hit and scolded me, andâ¦â
âSarah, if youâre scared, you should see a psychologist.â
âI just wanted you to come and keep me companyâ¦â
âSarah, are you trying to make me choose between you and Grandpa?â
âI didnât mean that.â
âEven if you didnât mean it, I want to make this clear to you. Between you and Grandpa, I will always choose Grandpa, understand?â

âI understand⦠Troy, please donât abandon me. I promise Iâll listen to you and see a doctor.â
âOkay.â
Troy hung up the phone, quickly put on his clothes, and said to Imogen, âIâm going downstairs to check on Grandpa. You can rest a bit more.â
âSure, okay,â Imogen replied drowsily, about to fall back asleep.
A while later, Troy came back upstairs. âGrandpa hasnât woken up yet. Agnes is by his side.â
Troy took off his coat and got back on the bed. âWe can take another nap.â
Imogen dozed for another halfâhour before getting up, washing up, and joining Troy to visit Henryâs room.
At the door, they could hear voices inside.
Upon closer listening, they recognized that the speakers were Layla, who had come early from the old mansion, and Leoâs wife, Agnes.
As Imogen entered the room, Troy held her hand and walked in beside her.
âGrandma, Agnes.â
Upon entering the room, Imogen and Troy greeted them.
âYouâre here. Why didnât you sleep a bit longer?â Layla said.
âWe couldnât fall asleep. Howâs Grandpa doing?â Imogen glanced inside the room.
âHeâs still sleeping. You guys probably havenât had breakfast yet. Go get something to eat. We donât need so many people here.â
âOkay, Grandma, Agnes, then weâll go grab breakfast first.â
Troy led Imogen out of the room.
He turned to her. âShould I have food brought up, orâ¦â
âNo need to bother. Letâs just go to the hospital cafeteria.â
âThe cafeteria might be crowded, and you canât see well. Itâs better if you go back to the room first. Iâll go buy us some food.â
âSounds good.â
Troy escorted Imogen back to the room, then went to the hospital cafeteria and brought back two breakfasts to share with Imogen.
